“One night stop for the football!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2014

On arrival I collected my keys from a member of staff behind the bar as the B&B accommodation is above the Spyglass and Kettle Public House. The staff were very friendly and chatty. It is situated on the seafront road a little out of town (Taxi required) and has a nice little beer garden outside which, during my stay, was smashing as it is a bit of a suntrap!

My room (#1) was spacious albeit the decor was very tired, not spotless but clean enough and was in urgent need of an overall. The bathroom and shower was a little pokey and the shower struggled to provide a lot of water for a shower although it was hot. There were clean towels provided and the bed was comfortable. The room also had tea and coffee facilities and a small TV fixed high on the wall which I didn't use.

I paid £45.00 for an overnight stay with breakfast and the breakfast was very good, full English with coffee and cereals and juice was readily available if you wanted that as well. Again the morning staff were very friendly.

Would I return again? Yes because this B&B is okay for a single or couple of nights stay but beyond that I would have looked for something a little more superior rather than budget accommodation. Also I cannot comment on the quality of the meals (excluding the breakfast) as I didn't eat here during my stay.

Room Tip: Room One was very large with a double bed and a small single in an alcove.

have not been to the Spyglass and Kettle for about 4 years because of bad food, it will be at least another 4 years before we go again. The only value for money was our Granddaughters Scampi & Chips and this was only because it was in the 2 for £10.00 meals with the pasta dish which was very poor value for money. The Wexford Chicken was lacking size taste and the peppercorn sauce which should have accompanied it , this was no where near value for money.

We stayed here for two nights. The decor is basic bordering on shabby but I was ok with that.
Our room was of a good size, it didn't have a wardrobe and the TV was far too small.

Bedding was very clean.

The bathroom was not clean and the base of the shower scree was disgusting. The toilet was not clean and had evidence of previous use if you get what I mean.

NO TOWELS.

Worst of all was that all the windows in the room were screwed shut and impossible to open.

The fire escape was blocked by a Z bed.

In the bar area:

The staff were very good and friendly, the food was good as was the beer.

I noticed a fire door being held shut by a chair, that was not good.

Breakfast was ok although the bacon had been cooked on a dirty griddle as there was burnt bits on my bacon from other food.

Checking in was easy, you went to the bar, paid for your room and was given a key and the bar staff told you what you needed to know.

I emphasise the staff were very friendly and helpful.

My major concern is the lack of fire safety.

Room Tip: Pay budget, expect budget

Decent pub and reasonable pub grub.

Large place but the food was served promptly and was hot and tasty. You don't go here expecting a la carte and what you get is typical pub food at a decent price.

We would go again if we found ourselves in the area.

The place was filthy, the food took forever and was not worth the wait, menu stated Jacket potato's cooked from fresh, yep that bit was true however 6 mins in a microwave was not enough it was hard and cold, rare steak was so rare it still had a pulse, waiter was polite but in definite need of deodorant, the toilets were disgusting, My dessert was nice but with in minutes of eating it I was rather unwell and remained ill for the rest of the day. I was so shocked how dirty the whole place was. It use to be a beautiful pub in a great spot but it has gone down hill dramatically.

Restaurant - Order & pay at the bar, food served on wooden trays, staff off-hand, service lengthy & unapologetic, table sticky, salt cellar dirty, toilets shabby. Location lovely. Such a waste of potential - was a great pub about 10 years ago - vibrant, well appointed, friendly waiter service, great food. What happened??

Good beer: local selection, good wine list, good pub grub, plenty of cosy space, looks after families well with kids menu and toys. In summary, its a well run pub.

Worth a visit if you're local or visiting the cliff top.
