The Lodge suited our needs pretty well. For the £50 a night we were paying we certainly didn't expect tea and coffee making facilities, a basin in the room, and a large flat screen television, all a nice surprise. I don't understand the reviews stating that the place is not clean and is dangerous; this is simply not true. The bathrooms were always clean and tidy, and our room was actually cleaned daily when we were staying in it, with our towels replenished.
In terms of location, the Lodge is situated a 30-40 minute walk from the sea front. We didn't mind this too much, but if you have young children, the long walk might be something to consider. In spite of this, it is extremely close to the train station, which was convient for us, and to Asda.
If you do stay at the Lodge and decide to eat out for breakfast rather than opt for the over priced £8.50 per night per head at the Ashleigh (hotel next door) then I fully recommend Chiquittas. It is a small cafe at the end of the road, serving a wide range of breakfast choices. My boyfriend had a Mediterrean Breakfast which was extremely good value.
Perhaps one thing which I think would attract more custom to the hotel would be some sort of self-catering area, where guests can cook and prepare their own food. There is also no communal area, which I didn't expect anyway due to the cheap price.
In terms of security, there is no reception at the hotel and effectively no staff there at all apart from cleaners during the day, as the staff seemed to inhabit the Ashleigh, the hotel next door. There was however a sign outside the hotel saying 'Beware of guard dogs', which was a bit reassuring, even if it was just placed there as a deterrent to any potential intruders.
We stayed there mid week and the hotel was generally quiet, aside from the normal slamming of doors etc. However, with all the stag/hen parties at the weekends, I can imagine it having a completely different atmosphere.
I would return to the Lodge; good value and no fuss.
