“should be bulldozed”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 May 2011

having stayed at the roal bath hotel last weekend I feel I must write to worn others not to venture to this has been bed and breakfast.
on arrival the queue to park was half way up the hill the porter Brett pointed out jokingly apparently better to go to the pay and display would save 45 minute wait and £12 a night.
When we got to reception the place was in turmoil 3 staff on duty but about 11 couples already waiting. We decided to go to the bar for a drink until it quietened down, This was a mistake the place only had about 20 people in it but we could find no bar staff at all about 5 mins later a young lady turned up and did apologise saying she was on her own and had to run off to get food for guests and the other staff were either on a break or just seemed to vanish. We had our drinks at last and at great expense.
We returned to the reception and at last it was a bit easier to get seen the receptionist was lovely with a warm greeting Marta I think check in was efficient only problem was the directions to our room 372 after about 10 mins we did find what can only be described as a goods lift it was not level and my partner nearly hit his head on the back mirrored wall as he tripped up into the lift about 3 inches approx. we arrived at our floor and went to our room but however that was as far as we could go due to the door lock not working. We had to traipse all the way back to reception as their were no hall phones. We were given new cards and told a maintenance guy would meet us at the room.
We returned and still the card would not work a couple of mins later a young scottish man turned up after trying our cards that still did not work he did let us in with his card saying this is a problem with a few doors and not to worry he will get it sorted. When we got in the room it was sweltering so went to open windows but for some reason their were no handles this was stupid we phoned reception to report this and was told once again maintainence would be along to sort it out for us we were offered a fan though. 5 mins later the same guy yurned up told us their was nothing he could do as this had been ongoing since he had started. Well after that we were resigned to our fate.
their was no pay movies, wi fi did not work shower was so weak i could spit with more power.
We went out for dinner and when we got back we could not get into our room we saw a housekeeper who let us in and said they would inform reception about this we heard nothing more.
Breakfast would have been lovely if only we did not have to wait 20 mins and then the drinks were cold the food abissmal and the service was none existant plenty of staff but not actually doing anything much.
All I can say is guess what back to our room to pack and yes unable to get into the room the maid phoned reception from another room even her card would not work this time. Same guy turned up tried to get in but couldnot seemed unable to know much at all had to phone a chap who had retired for help this was in front of us. whilst talking we heard him say it was a guy who left the week before who he blames for stuffing the door locks. we eventually got in half an hour we could not wait to get out of the hovel never to return.

My wife and I have just returned from a four night break at the Royal Bath Hotel and we really enjoyed every minute. All staff were friendly and polite and gave the impression that they enjoyed there job, we were given a room upgrade which was a nice bonus, we had lunch on Sunday which was perfect, breakfast each morning was very nice with plenty of choice even though I believe the hotel was fully booked we never had to wait for a table. The only fault we could point out was the tired furniture in our room, but it was still very clean. A big thankyou too all staff especially the Parking Valet who helped us often.

inside the hotel is lovely shame about the outside which is looking very dull
the only complaint i have is the taxi company you use,the taxi was dirty inside and the driver was rude.please i have stayed in this hotel before and the previous taxi company you had was a lot smarter and a lot more pleasant to talk too
but i would definetly give the hotel 5 stars for location and service !

We were attending a conference which is an annual event. The Royal Bath is by far the worst hotel which our group has used during the years over which the event has been held.

As noted by other reviewers, the whole building is shabby. Carpets are worn and appear to not to have been given a thorough clean for some time. The bedrooms need a make-over as do the bathrooms. No hotel information was provided in the room. The TV was an old CRT model with no Freeview or satelite channels and a very poor picture.

The main conference hall has peeling paint on the ceiling, appalling acoustics and useless lighting and PA equipment.

Apart from breakfast, the food was unbelieveably bad.

We had a bar lunch on the Friday. The service was slow, two of our colleagues were told that it would be impossible to produce a sandwich within 45 minutes. I was served cold chips and a soggy piece of fish which was described as a taste of Poole. Poor Poole!

Worst was to come with the main conference dinner on the Saturday. The starter was a fishcake which was even more soggy than my Friday fish. It was tasteless and barely warm. The main course was so bad that words can hardly describe it. A piece of reasonably cooked chicken was resting on what was supposed to be risotto. The latter had the consistency of a bad school rice pudding. It had no flavour and was lukewarm.

Hope springs eternal but things got even worse. The main course plates were cleared and we awaited the dessert. Nothing arrived. After half an hour, a message was passed round that someone had omitted to defrost the course. Eventually, a further half hour later, the pear parfait arrived. It was not worth the wait. I suspect it had been provided by an outside supplier. If so, the hotel needs to find another one. If it was made in house, the hotel needs a new dessert chef. Again it was totally lacking in flavour.

Finally the cheese, described a a selection of Dorset cheeses. There were supposedly three very small pieces per diner, on our table we were eight and only six portions were provided.

The coffee wasn't bad but it was reported that some diners who had asked for tea were told that it was not available.

Thank you for taking the time to review about your recent stay here for a conference, I am somewhat confused to learn of this since my team hosted their event debrief with your oganiser and the feedback was very positive indeed we did not have any concerns at all. I am sorry that the level of your concerns were not addressed to our Conference & Banqueting Manager or Duty Manager so that we could have helped resolve these whilst you were here at the hotel rather than to learn of this after the event.

We went to celebrate our wedding anniversary, a last minute decision, found on the web. The Royal Bath surpassed our expectations from the minute we arrived. We were met by a doorman, who offered to park our car, not easy in Bournemouth on one of the hottest days in April and the day before Good Friday, when Bournemouth was packed. Reception staff were quick and efficient and offered us an ensuite room, with a personal table and chairs outside-not expected. The room and bathroom were pleasant and the hotel was literally a five minute walk from the sea and pier. The hotel has a lovely garden with plenty of sunloungers and is amazingly quiet, an oasis from the hub of the beach and shops, which are minutes away. The lounge and restaurants are plush with attentive staff. Our evening meal was delicious and we slept well, no noise at all. We started the next day with a swim before breakfast and a jacuzzi, only one other guest present. The pool was clean, as were the steam room and other facilities. There was a small gym and cafe attached. Breakfast was the best I have ever had, everything you could want at a huge buffet bar, plus a chef making waffles and extra orders available from the kitchen, such as smoked haddoock and a poached egg. Tables were waiter served for drinks and any extras, again by friendly, caring staff. We were able to leave the car in the hotel car park and our cases at reception whilst we were out in Bournemouth in the morning. We returned for a relaxation in the garden and drinks and a snack before driving home. I would highly recommend this hotel-we felt like we had been away for a week-end, when in fact we had only booked for one night. A super way to celebrate a birthday or anniversary.

Two friends & i recently visited the hotel & spent half a day in the spa facility, our package included a facial & back massage too. Both the girls & i felt the spa exceeded our expectations - we basically had the pool & sun loungers to ourselves for the majority of the day. There were gym facilities too, but we were just interested in R&R.
We were able to wander up to the balcony and had tea outside, over looking the sea, which felt r.special. We also spent some time on sun loungers in the garden, which we just walked down into in our robes. The staff were efficient and i found the facilities clean and in good condition. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to relax in a small & friendly spa.

Royal Bath is the Grande Dame of Bournemouth hotels, centrally situated with good sea views and a certain faded elegance. The staff are cheerful enough and the breakfast buffet is certainly satisfactory or better. However, the overall experience is impaired by the generally tired fabric of the building and contents (including the old, rather than antique, furniture).

We had a premium-priced "Royal" room with a superb view and very comfortable bed but the furniture was aged, there was no hotel information available in the room and the bathroom was poorly-fitted and underlit. The switching handle for the bath-mounted spray had clearly been broken off some considerable time before and left on a fixed setting which gave half the flow to the spray and half to the bath tap. The shaver socket had no power and, despite apologies and promises of action when it was reported on arrival and on each of the three days of our stay, no-one visited to repair it.

Overall, average at best.
