“Great Hotel”
Reviewed 29 July 2012

After reading some very iffy reports on this hotel our cheap weekend appeared to be in peril!
However how strange that we found the hotel really nice and in an excellent position. Although there was a charge for parking the car it was secure and it was valet parked for you.
We had an upgrade to a room with a balcony (although small) and a sea view due to it being our anniversary.
The room was well appointed. The floor boards in the corridors did creak but it added to the ambiance.
The meals were good so there were no comlaints there.
Although not used, the gym and pool looked realy good.
Would we recommend. Yes we would!

An evening meal in the garden on a hot summer evening offered a mix of experiences.
The garden is lovely - big with ample patio tables (with shades) and chairs so outside seating is good. Easy to access hotel from cliff top - via garden. Main front entrance on town side of the building can necessitate crossing a busy road.
The main room/ bar area holds many seats but is not well laid out - and really never has been.
Not much privacy.
Bar staff regarding the ordering of food lacked the effort to make the ordered meal complete - and one staff member was a little huffy when we requested butter to go with the rolls. The food was good - but what was described on the menu did not fully match what we got. A Dorset ploughmans with ripe vine tomatoes turned up with one slice of tomato. This was a lazy chef.
A request for a Coca Cola saw a glass mainly filled with ice- not ideal.
This hotel has recently been taken over by another owner. It's hoped that they do good things for this hotel as in recent years we have seen a decline in its service and appearance.
Has a nice small bar further inside the hotel.
Have not stayed in rooms but know that the ballroom is amazing.
Very close to beach, pier and many restaurants.

We stayed at The Royal Bath for five days in July 2012. We have stayed at this hotel and The Highcliff Marriott Hotel in Bournemouth many times over the past twenty years during family holidays to Bournemouth. On previous visits this hotel was owned by the De Vere group and was a well run, high class seaside hotel. We knew the hotel had been bought by the Brittania hotel group recently and we were sceptical about how this would effect the hotel as our experience of other Brittania hotels has not been good! However our stay was very pleasent and the hotel was clean, comfortable and appeared to be well managed. The hotel grounds were very nice and as the sun shone during our stay we enjoyed sunbathing on the lawn! The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the hotel staff were attentive and helpful. However we did overhear other residents complaining about their rooms being noisy and cramped. We stayed in rooms 270 and 274 which had nice sea views and were very comfortable.
The main restaurant had changed since our last stay - the table d'hote menu served at your table had been replaced by a self service buffet which was of a reasonably high standard. However residents can still dine and be served in the separate Oscar's restaurant where the menu is limited, but the food and service were excellent!
The pool area and health club were free for hotel patrons, but during our stay the jacuzzi was not working and only one shower in the men's changing room was working! Towels were charged at £1 each and a pound coin is required for the lockers.
The hotel offers resident car parking in their on site car park for a charge of £20 per day or you can park at an offsite council carpark next to the hotel for £12.50 per day.
As the hotel had only just been taken over by the Brittania group when we stayed at the hotel, I cannot advise what other changes will be made - good or bad! I just hope that this lovely old historic hotel is preserved properly, investment is made to improve the hotel facilities and the new owners maintain the high standard of accommodation we have enjoyed in the past.

It is a couple of years since I last stayed at the Royal Bath hotel but a recent offer on Travelzoo encouraged me to book a 3 day break. On arrival the hall porter quickly arrived but showed no interest in helping with luggage but in parking the car at £20 per night in the garage! (the adjacent council car park is £12.50 per day in the open air). My wife and I struggled with luggage to reception where we were met with an 'alright?' which was not the welcome I had previously experienced at a four star hotel. Matters did not improve when I was told that the Travelzoo offer of a 3 course meal in Oscars Restaurent was a misprint and that the offer was in fact in Oscars brasserie (the restaurent is 'fine dining' and the brasserie is buffet style catering).--I held my ground and insisted on the offer as written and won the day.I am glad that I was insistant as the restaurent was excellent and the brasserie only mediocre ---on one evening the choice in the brasserie was either sausages or cottage pie! The change in ownership of this much respected hotel seems interested in cost reduction by dropping standards--this is apparent even from the quality of toilet rolls to that of marmalade at breakfast. Talking of breakfast, I did not have a hot breakfast during my stay---the buffet was warm at best and cold fried eggs are not nice. My stay was in the Royal Wing which had been recently upgraded in New England style and was comfortable--however, to reach the lift to that part of the hotel required a climb of 15 stairs (with luggage). The dining room staff were pleasant and efficient but not happy with the change of direction of the new owners--most commented ruefully about the drop in standards and cost cutting. I will be surprised if this hotel keeps its 4 star rating. I don't usually write critical reviews but I would not recommend this hotel to a friend.

We have just returned from the Royal Bath after a 4 night stay on half board. On arriving we where quickly signed in and given directions to our room being room 41i I am 67 and my wife is 63 there was no offer of assistance with luggage from the car to the room even when we were being charged £80 for 4 days parking.May be because we booked thru a deal on Travelzoo that we were not eligible for any help but we still paid £99 a night for half board for the room with a bottle of wine {£17} in room on arrival. Our final bill with parking and extras was £540. The room was OK with high ceilings and of a decent size but to mention a few problems:- bathroom radiator would not switch off it was warm in the room anyway , the hot tap on sink was running slowly all the time,on the bath and shower tap a rusty bolt was inserted for use, several handles on the draws are missing and the bathroom had no ventilation at all so I will leave that to your imagination. Breakfast and evening meal was a buffet , breakfast was OK other than hard fried eggs and a drink of tea or coffee was served on arrival in a small cup and I ended putting my hand in the air several times for a refill, dinner again was OK but limited in choice 2 starters,3 mains with 3/4 veg and 2/3 desserts .Soup was only warm.
All staff were good and efficient and the building built early 1800,s is very impressive but its interior is badly in need of renervation . The rooms are not very well insulated and sleep quality was affected . Cheapest bottle of house wine £17 and a pint of guiness £4.50 so £20 a round for 2 couples. The hotel was clean and cleaning staff also seemed efficient.

Room Tip: We did not have a sea view so £20 extra a night may be a good investment.

We booked this hotel based on the experiences we have had at other de vere hotels we had stayed with before, little did we know that this hotel is no longer a de vere hotel but is is a now a Britannia hotel. They were changing the branding during our stay.

The staff greeting was poor to the point that one member of staff ignored us as she had to "go cash up".

The room we were given was room number 50, in my opinion this room should only be allocated when there are no other rooms available, it's in the dungeon with a view of the restaurant window so any chance of a lie in with the curtains open is removed.
The room it's self was a good size but lacked any real style, oh and removing the laundry stickers from the pillow cases would be nice.

The food served in the restaurant is good quality and tasty but it's let down by some staff attitude and a lack of labelling of the buffet, any allergies are pot luck. Were they pork or beef sausages ? I still don't know.

I must applaud one waitress for her attention to detail she was helpful, polite and friendly and served us a complimentary glass of wine as a good will gesture as our meal took over an hour to arrive. I'm sure her enthusiasm will be stripped away over time.

The hotel has wifi but it's not available in the room not a big issue in its self but the kind thing most guest expect in this modern times.

The royal bath has all the requirements of a nice seaside hotel serving a clientele demanding quality and happy to pay for it, unfortunately corporate greed and profit has got in the way of investment in staff and property and customer satisfaction has all but been forgotten.

Would I stay here again ?  No which is a shame as I quite like what could be an amazing place to stay.

Room Tip: Don't except room 50.

Well there certainly isn't anything royal about The Royal Bath Hotel in Bournemouth. Please bare in mind when reading this that I have never left a bad review in my life. The day after our Wedding we stayed her ( thankfully for one night only). On arrival we were told it is £20 pound per day to park so we parked in the car park practically next door which was £12. Our first room we were showed too was dirty and had a rather rubbish view ( it was meant to be a sea view as we had paid for an upgrade).
Anyway- we were moved to another room with a better view of the sea and pier but the shower didn't work and there were what looked like dried snot on the duvet cover and burn holes in the carpet ( in what was meant to be a no smoking room!) We stayed in this room as had given up by this point. Very disappointing- no mini bar about 2 free bourbon biscuits was as far as it went here. You could tell staff here were not really bothered and no effort was made to check we were happy. We were not even told anything when we arrived like where we could find the Hotel facilities etc. Pool was ok. We got in the jacuzzi but were then asked to get out as they can only keep it on for 15 minutes at a time so that was short lived. Would never go back. Completely overpriced bar and very tired rooms. Just glad we have a proper honeymoon to look forward to in September. Claire & Al

Room Tip: I am not sure there are any good rooms here- we didn't see any.
