“A little tired”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2014

Hotel booked for a long weekend, via a booking site. £142 per night for with breakfast. Grand old hotel looking a bit tired, carpets thread bare in some places on stairs. Welcome very good, valet parking £20 per day. Reception staff and breakfast very helpful and friendly. Sea view room. Shower was a trickle!

Room Tip: Better rates available direct with hotel.

Due to the bad reviews I suggested that we cancel our Groupon deal, but so glad we decided to go ahead. We were upgraded with no extra charge to a large delux room with sea view, all usual facilities and huge clean bed and full selection of toiletries. We spent the afternoon using the very good leisure facilities, meeting a couple who live 10 miles away and who stay at the Royal Bath every year as it is such a good deal.
We had almost decided to dine out thinking dinner would be awful, but again found it surprising quality (Our deal also gave us a bottle of 'bubbly' which we actually quite enjoyed too). Very pleasant staff and although the restaurant is very big, everyone was seated in one section, making it feel cosier.
Breakfast was again a buffet and although not the best food, quite adequate to keep us going for a few hours. In daylight we could see views of the garden from the restaurant.
The hotel is in a lovely location, right on the beach.
Yes the hotel has seen better days, but we enjoyed our stay and would go again with a similar deal.
The only complaint was that the hotel was extremely hot. After enquiring we were told that there had been a problem with the boiler and that it would be rectified. As it was such a cold day I'm very glad it was too hot and not too cold!

if you want a mediocre hotel in a good position look no further. If you want a knife and fork as a table setting, paying for drinks as you consume them during a meal, anything but self-service do not stay here. It was out of season admittedly but this glorious grande dame of a hotel, right on the beach has seriously gone downhill as many other guests commented. Once a De Vere and used by major political conferences it is a now a Britannia Hotel with flimsy pamphlets in the rooms, a reception desk of one person ......and definitely for coach parties only. Thank goodness the bed was kingsized and excellent.....until the water dripped from the bedroom ceiling and we abandoned it.

Room Tip: Avoid Room 71- we asked to be relocated as dingy and a long way from the reception areas in this 577...

Good points. Upgraded to very double room, good amount of space, nice TV, Bathroom good, plenty of very hot water. Well equipped with good beds and chairs. Public areas have seen better days but OK. Self service Dinner included. Good selection of food. Breakfast included a very good selection of food. Dining Room and Lounge OK , but a bit chilly and large for out of season use. Staff very good and helpful throughout. Poor points. Empty wine bottle and glasses left in room, although it had been cleaned OK. Veg with Dinner rather cold although there within 20 minutes of start time. Not a problem with Breakfast, although we were much later after start time. General impression Hotel seen better days, after a long history as one of the top such establishments in Bournemouth. Still an excellent location for central attractions or shopping. Avoid using their very expensive parking and walk 5 minutes up the road to the East Cliff on road parking. Groupon deal used, but booking.com also well worth using for best prices.

My husband and I spent a Friday night recently at the Royal Bath Hotel in Bournemouth. It was a Xmas present (Groupon) and came with breakfast and sparkling wine. It is a very grand hotel, if a little tired looking. The staff were really very polite and helpful. It is such a shame because the hotel was probably very grand in its time, but we feel it could do with a bit of a paint and spruce up. Overall we did enjoy our short stay. I would recommend it.

We have stayed several times in hotels in Bournemouth and we were looking for a bit of special place to spend a night to celebrate a friends birthday along with his wife. The Royal Bath had always looked that bit special so when the good old Groupon had the offer which appeared to be excellent value we leapt forward and booked two rooms. We then looked at the reviews on Tripadvisor and felt depressed due to the high percentage of negative reports.

The day of our stay soon arrived and we stepped through the front door with doubts in our mind, we didn,t use the hotel parking, we used the carpark next door saving £7.50 and if we really wanted to save even more we could have parked up the hill at a cost of about £3.00 but I would have to have made it back to the pay machine by 09:00 the next morning, just not on the cards.

The reception staff were very pleasant and efficient and we were soon standing outside our allocated rooms dreading the worst. We opened each door and were all totally surprised, the rooms were both large and spacious.

Having watched the TV program Four in a Bed I conducted further investigation, not quite as far as checking for dust under the bed but all I could find was minor faults, yes the doors on the tv unit only closed if you closed both at the same time but come on get a life.

The heating worked if you bother to turn the temperature valve up, there were two hand towels and bathtowels, the towel rail was hot, there was a 32 inch held, the water was hot, etc, etc, I would agree with one complaint and that is the coffee and tea in the rooms is rubbish and for the sake of a few pence the hotel would gain from improving.

we made full use of the spa and gym which were perfect

The evening meal yes is a buffet and definitely is not cordon blue but we all found something to eat and we all enjoyed what we had. The free bottle of bubbly was not Moet but was drinkable and was a 10.5% brut not a bottle of Perry.

breakfast was again a buffet will the full normally selection and was very enjoyable, again a better quality of coffee and tea would have made it perfect.

We were on the £59.00 package and for that price we cannot find a single thing to complain about. Yes we may have been lucky to have been given two lovely rooms, we may have been lucky to have staff on who were friendly and attentive, we may have been lucky to have a menu where we could each find something on the menu with which we enjoyed, but all of that apart what do some people expect to get for that money, if you want 5 star then pay for five star and if it does not meet your expectations then you have right to complain but don't expect to pay peanuts and get the same quality. The package we purchased provided very good value for money and both couples had a very enjoyable visit and if Mr Brittania is listening could we please have the same rooms when we visit again

The hotel is currently undergoing some refurbishment and it needs to. Potentially could be really nice place to visit, good sized double room, nice bar/lounge area, food was fine, served as a buffet style but with a choice of hot meals, breakfast the same.
Bathroom floor was not cleaned well enough and this was the only real disappointment.
Would go again but would like the refurb to have been completed first.
TIP: There is a car park about 5 minutes walk from the hotel which costs £4 for 24 hour stay. Go up the hill from the hotel and take the first turning left, car park is on the right after about 100 yards.
