“Lovely position, great food, helpful staff but don't go at a busy time”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 January 2012

This was our fourth visit to this hotel and we stayed for the New Year package. I would recommend the hotel but not at such as busy time as the staff (who are brilliant and very helpful) were run ragged dealing with the many demands of the large groups of people (the hotel was full). The location is fabulous, easy to reach the beach(down a steep slope but there is a lift in the summer) and the shops and theatres but very quiet. Rooms and beds are large and some have sea views/balconies - which are great. throughout the hotel the temperature was FAR TOO HIGH! We had to leave our bedroom windows wide open all night - in late December. Luckily we had a table by the window in the restaurant but everyone was complaining of the heat. Food is delicious - well cooked and beautifully presented. Try to avoid peak times at breakfast as the buffet can get rather crowded but there is always plenty to eat. We recommend the hotel but the New Year package is poor value for rmoney compared to the rates at other times of the year. The room where the New Year's Eve party was held was so hot we could not even sit in there - and the dance floor is tiny and very crowded. We went to our room and watched the TV there!

Room Tip: Pay the sea view rooms but make sure you are not over the bar unless you like booming music under th...

Some really constructive feedback on the New Year package at the Carlton thanks for this and some of the positive comments you make about the team and the product we have on offer here in Bournemouth.
As indicated we have some really spacious rooms with great sea views and since New Year we have begun our refurbishment program of 34 bedrooms mainly sea facing which will also see the addition of air-conditioning so our guests can enjoy a comfortable temperature at all times.
Our extensive improvement plans for the hotel also include our main restaurant and we hope to address some of the crowding issues described at the breakfast buffet.
New Year is one of those times which fill up quickly and many do return year on year. We are already working on the entertainment package and look to bring in 2013 with a real sense of occasion.
This year will also see us develop family packages at the hotel and fresh-up our leisure club including improvements to the outside pool area which is a real Sun trap and great safe haven for the families on a summer day and just that short stroll to the beach !

Two night dinner bed & breakfast deal (with Dorset cream tea on arrival) was a very good deal. Both food and service were excellent throughout our stay. Porridge and fish were available at breakfast (to order). The evening dinner menu was imaginative, and the food was attractively presented. Service was attentive but unobtrusive. We had a superior room with a fabulous sea view. The room was spacious and well appointed although there was some loose wallpaper behind the drapes! The bathroom needs up-dating but we had a very enjoyable and comfortable stay and would happily pay a return visit.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view

Stayed for 3 nights, 27th - 30th Dec. Welcome was cheerful and the room first rate. Dinner from a short menu was excellent. Not a great fan of cooked breakfast pre-prepared but that was our only gripe. Staff were all good humoured and attentive. Would certainly go again

Hotel facilities and staff excellent, attended this hotel with a large private group of friends (25) initially had a problem with seating in the Restaurant however on discussing with the Management team all the stops were pulled out and they could not do enough to make our stay very comfortable. The Management (DM & GM) in particular were fantastic, relocated us to a private room with excellent service from the restaurant staff. The food was first rate and the chef and his team should also be commended for what was a great New Year experience for all of us. We have been visiting Bournemouth for over 20 years as a group and will definitely return to this hotel

Room Tip: Seaview rooms are fantastic

I booked the 3 night christmas package with our 3 year old son, my mum and husband. The welcome to the hotel was very nice as was the young man who helped with all our bags! We had a room on the 2nd floor and mums was on the 3rd floor, they were both fine, clean and tidy and we felt were in keeping with the hotels age. This is a hotel with large staircases, open fires and various lounge areas, this is not a trendy modern hotel and that is why we booked it! The hotel is ideal for a walk to town or the beach and lovely and quiet at night so you are guaranteed a good nights sleep. We loved the feel and the ambience of the hotel and the staff were very good with our little boy and they tried to be as helpful as possible with his meals etc.. He had a christmas tree in his room and a present from the hotel :) We felt that everyone else in the hotel was 70+ although they were all friendly a bit of younger company would have been nice, the hotel was far to hot and we left our windows open all the time, the restaurant was unbearable at meal times. This is our only complaint about our trip. The food in the restaurant was beautiful, piping hot and cooked to perfection with lots of choice. We had a beautiful stay and really enjoyed it and we will be returning for christmas again with more of the family (younger members). I think some younger guests would be nice but then would it feel as cosy and majical as it did with noise and hustle? Thank you Carlton for a memorable christmas, The Hawkins family x

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a sea view, it was worth every penny on christmas morning!

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 December 2011

We are a young couple in our mid-twenties who stayed here for 3 nights for s family xmas and on the whole we were had mixed feelings.

The hotel is in a nice location - ten minute walk from the city center, great views of the English Channel and beaches, quiet location and quiet hotel making it great for a night sleep.

On arrival the reception were friendly and fine. Porter likewise chatty and friendly. The room was large, but quite dated in decor as was the rest of the hotel. It wasn't shabby, but looked straight out the 1970's.

We got in to our room and went to take a shower, only to find the shower was broken. We called reception who said they would send someone up to fix it (which they did), however he couldn't fix it despite changing the shower head. They offered us another room to move into/to shower in but it was a few floors down and would have been too much fuss as this had already made us late for dinner, so we decided to make do for the night and sort it out the following day (xmas day).

Xmas day we tried to get our shower fixed again, they changed a washer. The flow of water was slightly better but still not acceptable. They did offer to change our room again, but we couldn't be bothered to pack and unpack again, so decided to make do.

The meals were ok, not bad but nothing outstanding. We ordered gluten free meals well in advance for one of our guests with our booking, but the kitchen and waiters seemed totally taken off guard by this and didn't offer alternatives but instead only offered taking certain items out of her actual meals. The staff in general seemed under trained, inefficient and unorganised, but on the whole were friendly and tried to be accommodating.

As part of the Xmas package they offered various activities through out the period, one being a cocktail making demonstration in their sister hotel. When we arrived to take part, the staff once again had no idea what was going on, let alone how to make many cocktails - however the barman was very charming.

The temperature in the hotel was extremely hot at all times. We turned down our radiator and opened our balcony door, but were still often in a sweat. Perhaps the heat and the decor is something to do with their clientele, not to be too rude, but the hotel could be renamed "God's waiting room" despite the hotel's best efforts to assist them on their way by putting unnecessary steps everywhere including the middle of the restaurant... if seated on the far side of the restaurant you had to go up and down two sets of stairs to get to the buffet!

Due to the heat we were frequently at the bar for a cool drink, however the bar staff didn't know what "Grey Goose" was despite it being on the bar menu, which turned out didn't really matter as they didn't have any in stock, likewise pineapple juice.

The chamber maids were polite, flexible, efficient and did a good job.

The gym was not bad for a hotel gym, we didn't use the pools.

As a whole it wasn't a terrible experience, however not really worthy of a four star hotel rating (should be three) and not for people under 60 years old.
