A great 4* hotel, top of east Cliff in the town, but not too far to the main town centre and pier
Sea view rooms offer a real ocean view and with just a small road running between hotel and
cliff top, you get the sense of being out at sea. Staff were all very helpful and pleasant. The room given was a large double and the décor was in keeping with the style of hotel, old traditional, with quite a few modern touches. Breakfast was great, being buffet and service, depending on your desire and order. Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again, unfortunately only got 12 hours at the hotel as I was in transit to join the Royal Princess inaugural cruise from nearby Southampton

Room Tip: Pay the extra, get a seaview

We did not rate this hotel as a 4 star. it might have all of the facilties which count towards a 4 star rating but the place is in need of serious redecoration and refurbishment. The outside window sills of the restaurant have paint peeling off and the base of the bay windows by the bar are just simply rotten and even unsightly. These things leave a bad impression on a hotel which was 4 star in a grand way, but which is now in decline. The main staircase carpet was badly worn and fixtures and fittings in our bedroom needed some general maintenance. There was black mould in the seal around the bath and the plug was off the chain. Simple things to remedy, so why not fix them? Lack of money I guess.
When we were there across a weekend we counted 2 stag parties and 1 hen party and the lounge areas were booked for group parties and business meeings which left only the bar to retreat to. When a 4 star hotel fills up with stags and hens then things are clearly not going the right way. Yes, the hotel was full and busy which was good for the hotel, but on the Sunday morning the restaurant was set for large parties and even the cocktail bar area had tables in set of for breakfast. That's capacity plus.
The single sex groups did not cause us any problems, except that large groups are always a bit intimidating and they take over the place in an unintended way.
On the plus side our bedroom was large and comfortable, the restaurant food was good, and there was enough parking space. We also liked the situation of the hotel on the eastcliff.
The staff were always friendly and accommodating.
The place just needs a lot of money spending on it to keep it up to scratch. It's a difficult balance to strike, but if the Menzies are resorting to filling the hotel with stags, hens and business groups then that's just fine for them. It just makes it a touch unpleasant for couples and families. As I said in the heading: .... "Avoid the weekends".

We visited our very good friends in Bournemouth at the weekend and we went for a meal at the Carlton hotel. The meal we had was arguably the best meal we have ever experienced whilst eating out, congratulations to the chef, we could not fault anything. We will look forward to going back to the Carlton when we next visit our friends in Bournemouth who will hopefully treat us to a meal there again.

Room Tip: We did not stay at the hotel but everything we saw was immaculately presented.

Had friends come and stay with us and decided to treat them out for a meal. We have eaten here before and have always loved the food. We were not disappointed as we experienced some of the finest cuisine we could all remember. Will definitely be back.

I booked for myself and my partner to stay at The Carlton Hotel, after reading other reviews from past guests, which were all pretty good. I have to say that we were not disappointed!. I booked a superior room, which was right on the front of the hotel & had fantastic views across to Poole & over the seafront & hotel gardens, which were also lovely!. The room was huge, kingsized bed & modern bathroom. All very clean & well looked after. We visited the spa & had a back massage each, as part of my partners birthday treat, this was great & the whole fitness suite was clean & well looked after. We tried the outside pool, but it was just 2 windy & cold, however, the inside pool was like getting into a bath!!. Fab jacuzzi as well!. Staff were all extremely helpful & pleasant & we enjoyed a delicious dinner at the hotel in the evening. Breakfast was also a delicious affair with fruit, cereals, cooked breakfast, or other dishes such as kippers or eggs benedict freshly cooked to order. We really enjoyed our stay & will visit again!. Great hotel, thank you to all the staff for making my partners birthday weekend so fab!.

I attended a birthday party here, there was a large group. It was a hired room and majority of the attendees had booked to stay at the hotel for the weekend. I stayed for two nights. The service was amazing, the food was amazing and so was the location, its just a short walk from Bournemouth so is not directly in the hussle and bussle but walking distance if you need to be there. The staff are very approachable, so was the facililties. They catered and went above expected service when our group stayed up out of hours andrequested the bar stayed open. The hotel is a little run down as this is an old building but its nice to see that it has kept its old style and that gives it a sense of fascination that makes every part ofhe building lovely to look at.

Unfortunately the fire alarm went off about 4am so woke me up, but apart from that was a superb stay! I know where I will be staying next time I go there!

Stayed at this hotel over the weekend and in general had a good time. The hotel itself has apparently been renovated and it was obvious that some work had been done in the rooms, but maybe the standard of workmanship was lacking in the way of finish and attention to detail. By this I mean preparation to the existing material before painting or papering etc
.
On the other hand the beds were comfortable and our room was very spacious with a sea view, with tea and coffee making facilities.

It rained heavily the evening we arrived and when my son went to the bar, rain was pouring in from the ceiling. This didn’t seem to deter the staff, as they said ‘they were used to it.’

The outside balconies are in need of work with rotten wood and paint peeling off from the underside of the balconies above. The hotel has a pleasant sitting area overlooking the pool and the sea beyond, but the pealing balconies are directly above. Again the outdoor furniture and the appearance of this sitting /dining area is somewhat lacking in the four star quality you’d expect. With a bit of a clean-up and paint and the odd pot plant here and there it could look much better. It doesn’t seem to deter most of the customers as they seem to be coached in for ‘one night only’. The room directly above, which just happened to be our room, can hear the Party going on until the early hours with this being a smoking area.

Most of the staff were friendly enough and the restaurant manager tries his best to get the staff to do as they should. The food itself was fairly good, with the breakfast being a bit sparse in the way of fruit and continental (such as pastries etc.) The evening meal was a bit disappointing as they had run out of several things by 7pm as one of the coach loads had just got in before us and the lack of staff was apparent. However later that evening the restaurant manager made sure that our party's needs were catered for on the second day by allocating us our own table with plenty of space for high chairs and room for our young children.

Where the hotel is situated is very good in the sense that if you want to get to the beach, then the cable car is directly across the road and this takes you down to the beach in minutes.

The hotel I would say was not really suitable for the disabled as there are stairs at the entrance of the hotel and also at the rear of the hotel by the disabled car parking. They do have a few ramps and a stair lift inside, but they are a bit of a hap-hazard effort.

I am sure that this was once a great hotel and still could be with some more attention to detail.

Room Tip: If you request a sea view make sure it's not directly above the bar.
