Reviewed 10 February 2014

Myself and my boyfriend stayed at the Carlton hotel over the wkend. We had a travelzoo deal but after reading some of the reviews were a little worried about our stay!

I can honestly say we had a fabulous time. The hotel itself overlooks the sea and is approx 10 min walk to the pier area / 5 mins walk to the pubs/restaurants (christchurch rd).

The hotel is decorated tasetfully but with an older design and the quiet room is noce for relaxing / reading. As part of the travelzoo deal we had an upgrade to the superior room. The room was huge. We had a seaview, sofa, plasma tv, kingsize bed, dressing gowns and a lovely clean bathroom with shower. No complaints at all!

Again as part of the deal we had a 2 course meal in the restaurant. The food in fredericks restaurant was good! I had the goats cheese starter and cod and pancetta main. No issues iwth either. We had 2 glasses of proscecco free as part of the deal whch we took to our room and later ordered a bottle (£28). Room service was efficient although there is a tray service of £3.50.

The breakfast the next morning did not disappoint either -both plentiful and tasty. We ordered poached eggs in addition to the hot breakfast buffet and they were cooked perfectly with a runny yolk. Perphaps the selction for continental could be better but we decided to opt for the hot option.

All in all I would recommend to anyone looking for a cheap wkend by the sea! Its not the ritz but its a very good quality 4 star hotel!

Room Tip: We had room 319- superior room with a sea view- very spacious and great view!As it was on the 3rd fl...

We have stayed at the Carlton many times and have always enjoyed our stay there. This time the staff went out their way to make it special for my husband's birthday. We had a free upgrade to a superior room overlooking the sea and complimentary champagne at dinner. The hotel is in a great location and close to all amenities, beach, gardens, town centre.
If I wanted to be picky, there were a few minor food issues - at breakfast the poached eggs I ordered were 'hard boiled'; the main meal wasn't very hot, no bread was ready for the starters, the restaurant manager apologised for this, the dessert I ordered wasn't correct, although I didn't say anything as I love all desserts. Perhaps the kitchen staff were under pressure!!

Room Tip: We had room 304 which was on the seafront - excellent room

after spending two relaxing days in swanage we were glad we had stumbled on the carlton deal with travelzoo. from the time we arrived to the moment we left we were treated to customer service at its best! the hotel lived up to expectations of decor, cleanliness, service and excellent food.
our room looked out over east cliff and was warm and nicely decorated all equipment worked and the bathroom was great.
the evening meal at fredricks was a treat in fine dining we were made to feel comfortable and special compliments to the chef and all the staff.
the breakfast was a great selection of hot and cold items and plenty to please anyone.
the cream tea scones were the business and cream and strawberry jam just added to the pleasure.
we will be back and recommend you do!

Room Tip: we stayed in a sea view room, worth upgrade

Set on sea front and had an upgrade of room included in our travelzoo offer. The offer was £40 each for b&b plus 2 course meal and cream tea. The room, although decor slightly dated, was lovely. Had a small balcony, nice bathroom and huge bed. The place was immaculately clean. The bed comfortable and plenty of space.

The receptionist forgot to give us vouchers for meals so slightly uncomfortable being questioned at dinner, breakfast and afternoon tea. The cocktails ordered came out way after our first course although they were the first thing ordered. The food, although hot and on hot plates, was decidedly average. The breakfast was really good with so much variety via buffet and you could order off menu for fish etc. the cream tea was good, the scones hot and fluffy. No complaints there.

The spa/ pool was a disappointment. Really tired and small.

All in all a nice stay with a fabulous sea view.

Booked in a hurry by my concierge - and before I checked in I saw the reviews on here and genuinely did not know to expect
But there were nothing but positives from me - smooth check in and a really spacious and comfortable room - room 233
A call ten minutes after I arrived from reception to ask if all was well - you could not ask for more
Breakfast was very good quality - and the ultimate service touch - the really helpful waiter chased outside with the tablets I had left on the table !
First class from start to finish

Before I start, I want to say that I think that this is the only wholly negative review I have every given on TripAdvisor!

We booked a last minute break at this hotel, high on the cliffs in a great location in Bournemouth. We arrived to find that we had been given a family room - which was actually 2 rooms one of which had nominally been turned into a sitting room. The rooms were very dated, though the beds were comfortable. The bathroom was even more dated with a shower screen that swung free (meaning either the floor got very wet, or the screen bumped against you in the shower) and a shower control that was incredibly difficult to turn off. The bed was comfortable though!

After a walk into the town centre (about 10 minutes away), we returned to get ready for dinner. At this stage I realised that, contrary to the booking confirmation and their mobile booking site (which I double checked), there was no Sky Sports - never had been apparently. The duty manager made himself available to discuss this and managed to apologise whilst still giving the appearance of not quite believing me that it was on their mobile site and my booking confirmation.

On returning to the hotel, a birthday party was in full swing - the noise so loud that we had no chance of sleeping. We assume that midnight would be a reasonable time for the party to finish but in fact it continued until almost 1am. We called reception three times to find out what time it would stop - no one answered on any occasion. We finally got off to sleep only to be woken at 7am by a false fire alarm!

We had a reasonable breakfast (plenty of choice and good service) before checking out.

At this stage we asked to speak to the duty manager to register our disappointment. He apologised and stated that he would speak to the front desk to knock a percentage off the bill. He walked away to behind reception...but never came back to confirm what was to happen! After approx 10 minutes of standing around we approached the front desk and explained - they responded that he had asked them to knock £25 off the bill. This, along with the way it was handled, felt like the very minimum that they should have done but we accepted this.

Overall a disappointing experience and I could never recommend anyone to stay there!
