Great Art Deco Hotel. Warm professional greeting by reception staff, as was check out. Given upgrade at no cost to a sea view with balcony. All public areas clean, tidy, well cared for. Great lighting in keeping with Art Deco theme. Bedroom fine for 3*, bathroom in need of update but clean and welcoming. Staff well trained, neat, tidy and helpful without being intrusive. Standard choices for breakfast but well cooked, Brasserie meal not exceptional but of a very good standard as was the service. Nice pool area , small but space restrictions, reminded us of US or continental holidays.
We only stayed one night booked the morning we left, but will definitely be back when next in Bournemouth. Keep improving and and you will earn the 4* status you are striving for! Having stayed in what was supposedly 4* accommodation the previous week in Cornwall (which was very disappointing) you are not far off.

What a friendly, warm hotel, the staff were really friendly and the grounds were lovely, the outside pool and sunbathing area was really nice and clean, shame it was not hot enough to go for a swim. The rooms were basic but clean and accommodating. We had two children with us and they had a connecting room, which my 6 year old loved, and they had bunk beds, their own bathroom, and a flat screen tv/dvd combo.
I red reviews before I booked, and do not understand how some people found it dirty and unfriendly! I can assure you it was worth the money, and we will be going there again.
The only thing that let it down was the uncomfortable beds and the creeky floor boards, but it was a old hotel, and you cant have every thing, and there was not alot for the kids to do, would have been a good idea to have a little park area with a swing and slide. But you could use the hotel next door, and they had a indoor pool and a games room.

Dear taylorlot, thank you so much for your superb comments regarding our interconnecting family rooms, service and our lido and poolside. We have worked hard to adapt the hotel to families during the 6 week summer months and other half term weeks. We have thought of a play area by the Pool, but after discussions, we felt with the games room at Suncliff, and the fact the poolside is also enjoyed by majority adults , sunbathing, eating and enjoying drinks, that it was sufficient to utilise the games area and indoor pool complex at Suncliff.
The creeky floorboards are the bature of the beast in some rooms at Cumberland but as we continue to improve and replace carpets, we are installing heavy duty felt to combat this. Look foward to seeing you and your family again soon.

We have just returned from a short break in Bournemouth with family including my elderly parents. It was our second stay at The Cumberland and again we found it to be good value for money. The hotel is in a prime location overlooking the sea with a short walk to the beach and into the town centre. We found the staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable, although found the lighting to be rather stark. We ate at both the restaurants and the food was lovely, especially the breakfast which left one spoilt for choice. The outside pool and bar area had a lovely continental feel, especially when the sun was shining!!

Thank you for returning to us a second time and posting your review. Its super that you enjoyed both our restaurants and our extensive buffet breakfast. The pool is very continental and was designed after many years of California living, thanks for appreciating the effort that has gone into this facilty at the Cumberland, I do hope to see you a third time in the near future.

I'll start with the positive things.

The staff were very friendly and professional. The breakfast buffet was excellent and had everything you could ever wish for. The hotel bar provided a nice place to just sit and relax while enjoying a nice drink. They also had free WiFi (which the rest of the hotel didn't have).

Now, my main complaint concerns our room. I understand that the Cumberland is a very large hotel with many different types of rooms, which all are quite different from each other.

Our room was a small room located on the back of the hotel, overlooking the parking lot.

The first thing you realize is that the room is quite poorly renovated. You can clearly see the original parts of the room sticking out here and there.

Next, the awful carpet flooring. The carpet looked really old and worn (no visible stains etc though). I didn't feel comfortable walking on the floor. This is of course something you would expect in Britain. The floor was also tilting quite a lot at certain places.

We had a double bed, which was the smallest bed I've ever slept in. Just barely enough room for two people, and my feet were outside of the bed all the time.

We still managed to get some decent sleep during our stay however.

The bathroom was nice and clean overall, with the exception of two very annoying things.

First, the shower in the bathtub. It was a rain shower which was installed in a way that only allowed quite short people to shower while standing normally. I'm 185 centimeters tall, and I had to stand in the most awkward position in order to be able to shower. There was no way to adjust the shower head either.

Second, a quite common and irritating thing about Britain is their water faucets, which quite often are of the old fashioned type where you have one tap with cold water and one with warm water, which you have to mix yourself. This was also the case in our room. Very inconvenient, especially when the controls for the shower are in the same level as your feet.

One more minor complaint. Why have only one tiny elevator for such a large hotel?

Overall, we liked the Cumberland hotel, but we probably won't stay there again.

Dear Henrik85
thank you for your review regarding your recent stay with us. I am pleased that you enjoyed the Cumberland and its facilties. Reading into your post, it appears you are a tall chap which seems to have resluted in some niggles during your stay. All the Cumberlands rooms are different sizes, and the smallest beds we have are British standard 4'6" wide. This said we have many rooms with 5' wide beds and also superking 6' wide beds, though I believe in the UK all beds are the same length. We are very customer service orientated at Cumberland and had we been made aware of any discomfort with shower head or bed, you would definitly have been moved without question to a larger facilty. Th carpets in the hotel are all less than 3 years old, although some rooms to have a tight pile carpet. we are replacing these carpets gradually as and when finances allow us. Most rooms do have flexible shower heads, the rain shower head is a more superior facilty but abviously is not movable, all shower mixers are at knee height or bathtop height. Once again thank you for your comments and if you do stay with us again please make sure you request a larger bed with flexible shower, I think us brits are a shorter race than the strapping Swedes!
