“Squeaky Floorboards”
Reviewed 1 January 2012

Having spent Twixmas at this hotel I am afraid I will not be spending another. The hotel has just been re-furbished and the decor is stunning. The food excellent and the staff could not be more helpful. Unfortunately if you want to get a good nights sleep make sure you get a room on the top floor. For the 3 nights we spent there we hardly slept a wink as the walls are so thin and the people above us seemed to spend all night walking around their room, knocking over tables and rummaging through their wardrobes. The floorboards groaned everytime they walked around and at one stage I even ventured upstairs to make sure it wasn't a general area or walkway that I could hear. The entertainment was horrendous, so much so that we went to the two sister hotels next door to see if there was anything better. It would be a good idea if management made a rule that no children should be left to run riot on the dance floor after 9 or 10 at night as it made dancing impossible for the adults not to mention how disheartening it must feel to the entertainers. The average age of the people staying at the hotel were older so I find it rather odd that they put on a disco with all the latest music as entertainment one night. That certainly chased the majority of the residents away. If the above could be rectified I would return as the Cumberland is good value for money and the location in Bournemouth is excellent but I doubt they could resolve the floorboard issue, though they could certainly improve on the entertainment by perhaps spending a bit more money on quality entertainers and perhaps a live band instead of a disco.

Room Tip: Choose the top floor so you don't have squeaky floorboards above you to keep you awake all night...

First thank you for noting that Cumberland is value for Money and well located. Regarding floorboards, as you state , we acnnot rectify this instantly. We are providing special underlay in rooms when re-carpeted and not all rooms have issues. It generally is only an issue when you have nocturnal guests( which are few) staying at the hotel.
Cumberland is a 1937 built Art Deco hotel, with lots of character including squeeky floorboards.
Lastly, The Cumberland only hosts Entertainment for residents during the 10 festive period. The three nights of twixmas consisted of one duo, one group and one retro disco, this to give variety to all guests, including families! I can only apologise if you stayed on the disco night and it was not to your liking. Thank you for your comments.

The rooms have very very thin walls and floors. I could not sleep all night as the guy/girl staying above my room kept walking all night in his room and that was making a squeaky noise which kept me awake all night. I had read about the old rooms and the think walls and floors before but I did not take it seriously. i wish I had considered the reviews before booking this hotel. Well, I wont make that mistake again next time.

I must apologise if you did not enjoy your stay at Cumberland. The hotel is old, built in 1937, although millions have been spent on all areas to make it what it is today. It is unfortunate that you had a nocturnal guest in the room above. We are adressed squeeky floorboards as and when we re-carpet rooms, the hotel has much charachter, floorboards with it.
I feel I must also point out that the Cumberland is more than floorboards, and tripadvisor is a tool to balance reviews of stays for the travelling community, including food and service, to which you have omitted. Although I can sympathise with your point, had you brought this up, alternative accomodation could have been offered, and it would have been a more balnced view if your review had also brough pluses and minuses to the table. Happy New Year!

This was our third year running and have already booked four rooms for Xmas 2012. Great value for money. Food generally very good with three meals a day plus tea included in the package some will be better than others but overall more than acceptable. Bar food was plentiful and good value. Front of house and downstairs very comfortable and well decorated. A nice festive feeling. Staff all well trained and dedicated to meeting every need. Always cheerful and nothing is too much trouble. Rooms remain adequate but not at same level as downstairs but we understand that at these prices wholesale investment in all rooms is not financially viable. Overall package and experience very good and the management team deserve full credit for the way their team serve and provide an enjoyable experience.

Booked in on 27 Dec for one night to see family. Had a superior room with sea view. The views were great but the bedroom seemed almost finished, but not quite. I understand the retro theme that is being created and the public rooms look great but our bedroom had not been finished off. The interior doors to the bathroom and walk in wardrobe were not in keeping with the rest of the room and looked tired.Ingress and egress to the shower over the bath was not easy and older residents could have problems. There were no grab handles in appropriate places and a high step over the bath side was not easy - and I am fully able bodied.
We dined at the hotel and the food was very good and staff attentive for my wife's dietary requirement for gluten free food. Breakfast food was very good but the tables in the dining room were so close together that negotiating between them to your own table bought complaints fron the table's occupants. It wasn't like this on my last visit and the hotel was fully occupied then.

I am so pleased that we only have 5% to go. All feedback from our guests helps us acheive this more productvely and efficiently. We have just completed a very expensive new door and locking system and is now the most hi tech in the town. Rooms are on going and will once again show improvement in 2012. Look foward to seeing you again. Happy New Year

Just had 2 nights at the hotel. On the positive side the main downstairs rooms are lovely & well decorated. The bedroom was a little sad the energy saving lightbulbs do little to enhance a cosy feel to the room (no table lamps). The bathroom could do with a makeover, mould starting to appear in places. There are notices in the bathroom stating that you need to run the hot taps for a while to let the hot water through, however my bath the first night was cool to say the least, after running for ages, 2nd night it was better. I must have picked the "right" time. I think that what lets the hotel down are the expensive drink prices £3.80 for a pint of bitter & over £6 for a glass of wine, if you want a bottle of house wine it will set you back £16.50. By all means they need to make a profit but I think that's a little cheeky. It was noticable that there was never a queue at the bar, as nice as it was. Breakfast is not bad, reasonable choice & a nice dining area although the bacon was (in my opinion) undercooked on both the occasions I had breakfast. I have stayed in worse establishments but it would not take much to improve this one, better lighting in the bedroom, bathroom re-furb & sensible drink prices then I may consider returning.

We would like to say how much we enjoyed our stay at the Cumberland Hotel over Christmas. The food and service were outstanding. All of the staff were very friendly, attentive and helpful. The hotel was splendidly decorated, which contributed to a wonderful atmosphere.
On the downside, we could hear the occupants from the room above.

Room Tip: Due to the noise factor, choose a room on the top floor.
