“Art Deco style by the sea”
Reviewed 9 June 2013

Stylish bar, restaurant, pool, with a touch of class at budget prices. Perfectly situated to be "away from the bustle" but near enough for a short walk into town. The rooms are clean, tidy and functional, but top marks to the staff who were very helpful and good company. It was a perfect base for playing some stunning local golf courses.

Room Tip: Personally I prefer the quiet rooms facing the rear, they are cheaper too. Front facing with sea vie...

Just back from a very enjoyable stay at the Cumberland Hotel found the accommodation to be of a good standard, clean and tidy. The staff were very friendly and attentive but not overly so and I would be happy to return. The only slight negative was the distance from town and attractions which I would have liked to have been a little nearer to.

We decided to head to Bournemouth for a night while the weather was good and booked via Lastminute.com at 11am and arived at lunchtime. The staff were very polite and friendly and the service was quick and efficient. The hotel is South Beach Miami art deco style and the decor in the lobby, bar, restaurants was modern and snazzy! The room was fine with a nice clean bathroom. We didnt pay for a sea view but we had some nice sunshine in our room in the evening and morning as it was north facing at the back of the hotel. The plug didnt fit the plughole in the bath and it took me a while to get the temperature right in the shower but that wasn't a major problem. The bed wasnt very comfy and pillows a bit lumpy but again It didnt really matter.

All of the staff were very friendly and said hello everytime we passed any of them. The outdoor pool was very nice. We were uable to use the Suncliff indoor pool next door too. The meal in the a la carte Ventana restaurant was lovely and it was 241 which was great value. The breakfast was good. Nice pastries, loads of jams, juices, bread, hot full english and cold continental. No bananas though but never mind!

All in all a great hotel. I would definately go back. It's a perfect location for the beach and town and a lovely walk to both. Has parking too.

The sun was shining and the hotel was great. Perfect location, just a short walk from beach/town, with great views over cliff to beaches and sea beyond. When we arrived the pool area was alive, with a good mixture of ages swimming and relaxing, due to the Art Deco Hotel Style, I thought I was in Miami! My wife and I had an enjoyable stay, the food was very good, public areas clean and well looked after, so were the rooms. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful. In consideration that this is a 3 star hotel, it is not perfect, but that does not detract from the overall experience, it is good value, and we will definitely go back again

Room Tip: If you can afford it go for the sea view rooms. We had room on car park side, and were woken by dus...

We have stayed at the Cumberland on 4 occassions and really rate the Hotel, it's in a great location with nice facilities, the pool area is fantastic on a nice sunny day and we had two great days last weekend. However, our stay was spoilt by the people staying in the room above us who came in around midnight shouting and singing and then proceeded to have a party in their room. It sounded like there were at least 6 or 7 girls in the room and they kept coming and going until 5 the next morning. I have spoken to some friends of ours who also stayed at the hotel recently and they had a similar experience and were told that alot of hen parties seem to base theselves at the hotel. I would advise the hotel to keep an eye on this trend or they could lose potential regular customers.

Room Tip: go for seaview with balcony

Dear mozHillingdon,

Thank you for your review. You rated us well, so we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. My sincere apologies that you were disturbed by some of your guests. It is a shame that you experienced inconsiderate guests staying with us. They were enjoying their stay even though a bit too much.
I can assure you that rowdy/noisy guests are dealt with and asked to be respectful. My advice is please call down at the time so the management are able to deal with them.
We do have what we call a group bond, where groups are adhered to sign a bond to respect the property, and if so they forfeit a deposit that is held. This deters most from causing disruption. Group bookings of single sex or of similar kind are managed very well, to ensure that all guests have an enjoyable stay.

Once again thank you for complimenting the hotel, and we hope to welcome you back soon!

Sean Nell

Overall a good experience.
Pros : Excellent Service , Awesome Location, Very Clean Bathroom, Nice décor in the Lounge.
Cons : Inadequate parking space, Small rooms, Very small lift

The stay was overall good. The service of the staff is excellent. Since I kept a "Do not Disturb" tag for the whole day, the room service kept a full set of replacement towels in front of the door. Having stayed in N number of hotels around the globe this was something of a surprise for me and a first time experience. The bathrooms are very clean. The location is perfect with a short walk from the beach.
The parking space on the weekends is a problem, though we were given option to park in the nearest Cliffside and Seacliff hotels it was still a very bad experience. Its more like we have to wait in the road and quickly enter when a car comes out of the hotel. We had to spend literally 20-30 minutes both times we took our car out. We even had to park our car outside in the road and come back later to get a parking space. The rooms are pretty small and needs some re designing. For the amount this was the smallest room I have ever got. Also there was some noise from upstairs and near by rooms. The lift is too small and three persons can squeeze in if there is no luggage.

Having said that we forget all the problems due to a very good service both in reception as well as in the restaurant area.

Dear Ashwin M,

Thank you for a good review. Your compliments regarding the staff and service, thank you. We do endeavour to provide all our guests with great customer service, which you experienced. We have great Housekeeping team, and our Executive Head Housekeeper is on top of her game, and I know she will be really pleased when she reads your review. Her team too!
Unfortunately, the nature of the building is inherited, and where we can, we try to make changes if plausible. Room sizes do vary, but overall they are all good sizes. Our lift, is cosy, but we do have service lift which is operated by staff for luggage ect. which does help the overall usage of our guest lift.
Car parking, is a premium in Bournemouth. We are lucky in our resort of 3 hotels together that we have 3 car parks. When its busy, yes it can be difficult to locate a good spot, but car parking is available on sea front for £3 for the entire day, and free overnight.

I am glad that these minor issues did not deter your stay at the Cumberland.

We hope to welcome you back soon!

Sean Nell
