“Beautiful Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 June 2013

Returned today from 4 night stay at The Cumberland, our first visit to this lovely hotel. I think it has all been said already in previous reviews: the art deco style decor is really stunning, the staff are the most friendly, pleasant and efficient we have ever had the pleasure of meeting and nothing was too much trouble. When the lovely room we were allocated on arrival proved to be too warm for me and I asked if we could have a fan, we were immediately offered another room which had big windows to open which was just ideal. We were also offered help to repack and move to the new room should we wish. The room and bathroom were spotlessly clean. The buffet breakfast was lovely and there is no feeling of you being rushed as in some hotels. I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone, the service was second to none.

Dear Scottie006,

Great review, thank you. Break is, as they say the most important meal of the day. Our breakfasts are really good, and pleased you enjoyed it. Thank you for you kind mention regarding the staff as well as the hotel itself.

Hope to welcome you back soon!

My partner took me to the Cumberland Friday 14 June for 2 nights. It is a lovely looking Art Deco style hotel right on the sea front - a lovely stroll down to the town. A very smart young man greeted us, wished me Happy Bithday and chatted politely while the admin was done. Because it was a special occasion my husband negotiated a room upgrade to a sea view (whats the point in coming to the seaside and overlooking the car park?) - thanks to Nuno Gomes who allowed my partner to view the rooms and then swiftly sorted it for us. The poolside is perfect - clean, modern furniture - perfect for lounging on with a glass of wine while the room upgrade was being sorted. We were in room 212 - with a balcony overlooking the pool. There was a hairdryer, T&C making facilities ..... thats about it as facilities go!! It had a big bathroom which was very blandly decorated - too white (thats me being picky) - i like a cosier room when i am taking my bath. The bed was comfy and the decor was very contemporary - the balcony was a bonus!! There was a bowl of fruit in the room too which was a nice touch. There is mention of squeaky floorboards on other reviews - i must say we were plagued by the creaks too - though not enough to spoil our stay. The common areas of the hotel are tastefully decorated, very plush and its lovely to sit around the lounge bar area with a COSTA coffee or a wine. The restauarant looked beautiful and at a glance, the menu looked very reasonably priced. The first night we were there - a Lady GaGa Tribute act was on. There was a special rate for hotel guests where you go a 3 course dinner with coffee, you watched the show plus warm up and interval acts and got to stay at your table and enjoy a disco afterwards. It was priced at £29.95 each - Nuno Gomes once again came up trumps when my partner negotiated a price which made it more affordable do us. Thank you Nuno, we had a great night and Lady Gaga was amazing. Breakfast was in yet another lovely dining area - hot buffet, cold buffet - coffee on tap bought to your table. Quality food too. The 2 neighbouring hotels are part of the same chain and guests can make use of the facilities in these hotels too (we didnt so i cant comment). The staff were all very pleasant and friendly nothing appeared too much trouble. I would definately go back to the Cumberland again. Thank you for making my birthday a great one.

Beautiful hotel overlooking the beach. As soon as you walk in to the reception which is stunning
you are greeted in a very friendly manner. The members of staff are all extremely smart and could not do enough to help you, a sign of good management. From the minute you walk in to the minute you leave you are made to feel valued. Loved the interior which is art deco and is throughout the whole hotel. Had a standard room on the second floor which was quite large and very comfortable with tea and coffee facilities and really clean. The breakfast was superb with so much choice and the service incredible. At the front of the hotel is a swimming area surrounded by tables and chairs perfect for relaxing and sunbathing. Really enjoyed our holiday and will certainly be returning. More like 4/5 star Excellent.

Staff were very attentive and very friendly. All meals that we had either on the terrace for lunch or in the restuarant for dinner were fantastic. Got an upgrade on the room as there was a mix up at reception which was quickly dealt with. Overall a very pleasant 3 day break.

The Hotel was very nice. A throw back to the Art Deco period The Menus in both restaurants were upscale and a pleasant surprise. We did book a standard room on the second floor which was just that-- very average. There was no bedside light or lamp, there were no tissues or bath products (left my shower hat at home), no face cloth and the towels were pretty worn and few. The bathroom was old and the water went down very slowly in the sink. To top it all the floor upstairs must have been made of paper. The people above walked across the floor each night from around 11 p.m. until I couldn't take anymore and had to phone the front desk to complain at 1.30 a./m.. Every night the same thing happened I got absolutely no rest and felt tired most of the trip.. So would I stay there again??. Yes. I would book a room on the top floor with no one above me and I hope that during the renovation stage they update the bathrooms and the carpets but overall the staff were wonderful. Couldn't have asked for more charm and assistance; the food was good; the location and general facilities were fine for us. The kids loved the link between the other two hotels.

Room Tip: Pick a room on the top floor to avoid heavy feet above you all night!! Take all your own toiletries...

Dear bestbunny10,

Thank you for you recent review. I am disappointed that you did not have an entirely enjoyable stay with us.
The Cumberland Hotel built in the 1930's, purpose built Art Deco building, is an ageing building, and comes with certain drawbacks. All bedrooms are on a continuous maintenance programme, so on a cycle. We have been fixing floor boards from rooms that have been in need of some attention, so am concerned you may have been staying in a room that needs looking at. Ones that are in need, jump the queue.
Its a shame I don't have your room number, as would like to get this issue addressed.

On the plus side, you would stay with us again, so am pleased that with the negatives you experienced you still have faith in returning. As you have noted, customer service is our forte, and am pleased you found this in the staff. Also our restaurants, which are both very good, so am glad you experienced this.

Thank you, and we hope to welcome you back soon.

Sean Nell

Yet another wonderful stay at our favourite hotel, the Cumberland hotel. We checked in with a petit blonde girl who was very polite and informed us of all the information we needed for our stay and was very friendly and professional.
The room was 304 , the room was clean and tidy with well stocked tea and coffee tray. The en suite was clean and fresh clean towels were available on the heated rail. The shower was the BEST we have had since staying at the Cumberland ! It was hot and the water pressure was perfect ! Definitely asking for 304 again ! ... Even if it is above the smoking area ....
We dined as always in the Ventana grand cafe.
We were welcomed by Christian and Simone and shown to our table by Walter who told us of the specials and welcomed us back. The new summer menu is lovely with a great selection of main courses but as it was Sunday we chose the roast rib of beef.
To start we chose the olives and sun dried tomato which were very nice and flavoursome . When the beef arrived it was mouth wateringly tasty ! The huge Yorkshire pudding was lovely and it was accompanied by roast potatoes, baton carrots, cabbage and cauliflower.
We thoroughly enjoyed it and sadly had no room for desert !
At breakfast we were welcomed by the young dark haired chap ( didn't catch the name .. Sorry) he remembered us from our previous visits ( which makes it all the worse that we couldn't remember his ... Again sorry )
We were served fresh coffee by a friendly waitress who shared my taste for lots of caffeine in the morning ( blonde lady with glasses and tattoo on her wrist) she was even on hand for refills !!
The breakfast was as always a wonderful selection of hot and cold choices along with traditional english buffet breakfast all freshly cooked.
To sum it up , it's our favourite place to stay and as it was our anniversary it was even more special!
We very much enjoy our time at the Cumberland and at the Ventana , the ambience and staff make it a very relaxing stay.
Many thanks .

Arrived Saturday 15th June at 10.30 and although official check in not till 2.30pm our room was ready and the hotel more than happy for us to check in - brilliant! Hotel decor all art deco and staff couldnt be more helpful. Our sea view family room with balcony (308) was ideally situated on the 3rd floor directly above the open air pool - lovely views both directions. Only had B & B but breakfast buffet style was more than adequate. My only negative comment was the lack of concern by other guests coming back late at night with children making noises and also someone in room above doing "river dance" on the creaky floorboards at midnight!! So lack of sleep ! The hotel offered ticket booking for celebrities on ice at a discount of £10 per ticket instead of £27.50 - took advantage and the show brilliant!! Will be back at this hotel for definate.

Room Tip: Have a 2nd or 3rd floor sea view
