My lovely family of 2 sons, 2 daughter-in-laws, 3 grandsons of 15, 10 and 4 months and my husband and I have just returned from a weekend break at the Norfolk Royale.
Our rooms were very spacious and inviting. The furnishings were modern, clean and the beds very comfortable. The hotel provided Molton Brown shower gel, shampoo, hand wash and hand cream. The towels were thick and very large. The shower itself was really forceful and great temperature. The only criticism I would make is that the rooms themselves were very hot and in summer would benefit from fans in the rooms. The family rooms had good large bunk beds and they provided a nice cot for the little grandson of 4 months.

We were staying on a bed and breakfast basis and we were all very impressed with the breakfast. All the food was of a very good standard, except perhaps for the sausages but of course that is just a matter of taste. The fresh fruit selection is probably one of the best we have ever had and my husband and I have done a lot of travelling and have consumed a fair number of breakfasts. All the cereals were of a good standard including Dorset museli which is one of my favourites and quite expensive, I know because I buy it.

All the staff were helpful and pleasant and just a mention to Adrian in reception who was always smiling and the man behind the bar (sorry didn't get your name) was also very helpful.

The indoor swimming pool was nice and clean and warm. The children loved the pool and the jacuzzi.

The hotel is in a great location being about 50 yards from the shops and a 5-10 minute walk through the gardens to the beach.

We would not hesitate to return.

We stayed for a couple of nights on vacation and found the service friendly, the rooms OK (no proper reading light), the central location good but the food only so-so.

This was our second vist to the Norfolk Royal.

My wife and I booked the hotel as part of a special offer so all in all we had good value for money.

However we would suggest that the normal daily rate is excessive.

The Good Points

The hotel is situated close to the shopping area and park and is approximately five minutes walk from the pier.

The leisure facilities (pool, sauna etc) are good and there is a pleasant outdoor garden area.

The general ambience of the hotel is of a bygone age.

The buffet breakfast was adequate, althouge I personally didn't like the sausages.

The evening meal was nice and well presented.

The Bad Points

Our room which faced St Stephens Road was exceptionally warm although the external temperature wasn't. Although this was a no smoking room it was obvious that the previous occupants were totally inconsiderate and had ignored this. This is not a fault of the hotel but the windows should have been left open to try to alleviate the problem.

The room was in need of an update as were most public areas.

Some of the staff could be better trained. We complained about the waiter in the restaurant who had a serious problem with body odour. We were told at reception that there had been previous complaints. If this was so, why did the problem still exist? Either the rest of the staff have no sense of smell, or as this is a sensitive problem, no one was prepared to sort it out. Its no use having Molton Brown toiletries if the staff smell.

The car park charge is excessive.

However we would visit this hotel again, but not at the normal daily rates.

We stayed here with a family group, using five rooms. The rooms are generally well equipped, decent furniture and bathrooms. There are several elements that are worth considering. The rooms have no air conditioning and rooms that have poor ventilation. On the first night we stayed the room was unbearably hot and humid. We changed rooms the following morning with no trouble. TVs are antiquated and provide no freeview access, despite the fact this service was launched in 2002. Staff were friendly and helpful and prices were reasonable across the board.

We have stayed in over 10 hotels in Bournemouth in recent years. The Norfolk Royale is our favourite and we have stayed there on at least 6 occasions. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Our family room was spacious, comfortable and bright. The main shopping area is just two minutes walk. We really enjoyed the indoor swimming pool which was warm.

The restaurant needs to have more consideration for vegetarians. My wife would not eat tomatoes, mushrooms or eggs from the cooked breakfast counter as these were amongst sausages, bacon etc. Tongs, spoons etc were used for both meats and vegetarian foods. Apart from this, the breakfasts were very good with a wide choice.
We have also had lunch (from the bar) and evening dinner which was excellent and well presented.

Stayed here for two nights while on business. Room was spacious and comfortable (especially the big bed), I liked the fact that it was modern whilst other parts of the hotel had retained their original features. I was a little concerned about noise as the room had the original sash windows but luckily it wasn't too bad. Loved the molton brown toiletries and power shower! As other reviewers have said, no air conditioning in room, so it was difficult to control the temperature.
Breakfast was OK - not amazing but perfectly satisfactory.
Reception staff were a bit hit and miss, also I had an issue on the second night with my room not being serviced during the day, although to be fair when I complained the manager was very apologetic.
All in all a pleasant stay, I would recommend to others, although don't expect too much.

We had always used this hotel previously, but had not been back for around 3 years, definite improvement, room was lovely, very spacious, clean and modern, the bed was enormous!
The food in the restaurant was excellent , and the service all round was really good, very friendly staff, still a few friendly familiar faces! Hope to return again, we go to Bournemouth for an out of season break normally, when its not too busy.
