Carrington House Hotel
Ranked #61 of 66 Hotels in Bournemouth
Reviewed 14 May 2014

I have just come back from a weekend at the Carrington House, I have stayed here a lot in the past, my last trip a year ago. This trip was the first here for a year. We travelled as a group(dancing). Over the last few years this hotel has gone down in every way but has now become part of the Brittanina chain. It is undergoing a major refurbishment, which is good, but guests are not warned beforehand! On the website is boasts a heated indoor pool........Closed! Extra beds have been put into rooms so now in my regular room (Double & Bunks) there is now another single and still the two armchairs and table!!!! so now a little cramped...apparently all of the rooms of this size have had this happen....losing the trouser press and iron to achieve this, do accept a bed brings in more money than a trouser press! We were told that the waitress service in the restaurant had been stopped and replaced by a 3/3/3 buffet, no problem with that except the organising of the self service system was total chaos. At this point I have to say that the General Manager had only been appointed the previous day and he did do everything he could to make things better for us, which was much appreciated. The food quality has certainly gone right up which was great news, as on previous trips the quality was appalling, so things heading in the right direction. The hotel boasts parking for 100 cars, we have always felt that this is quite a stretch of the imagination but now you have to park between skips, old furniture, beds mattresses etc so parking now is very limited. There are another 35 bedrooms being added so this could be interesting as the size of the restaurant struggle to cope with 100 people will it cope with potentially more covers. If all of the refurb does go to plan and gets finished The Carrington Hotel should return to the Hotel it once was, but I do feel that people booking in should be warned that the advertised facilities may not be available and that major work is being carried out.

Room Tip: At the moment there aren't any really good rooms....but there will be

We have just come back from a line dance weekend at this hotel.
The hotel has had issues and bad reports in the past but we found the hotel staff to be very helpful and when things needed to be sorted the hotel staff did everything they could to make it happen.
The food had a bad report but we couldn't fault the food and the rooms are gradually being revamped, new beds new duvets and curtains too.
The check in system was brilliant separate table for our group and once we got over the initial problems the organisation was fine.
We are definitely going back in November as they are bending over backwards to make the hotel work and we are supporting them in doing this so join us next time

Room Tip: we like the rooms on the top floor in the Frome wing goes straight down to the ballroom 354 356 etc

This hotel needs a good makeover and a good thorough clean. The beds were clean but that's about it. Food was poor and very little choice. Fruit salad was nice though!
Bathroom in dire need of cleaning the basin tap was that covered in limescale hardly any water could get out. Paper peeling off walls. Damaged areas botched over etc.
wouldn't go there again. Staff quite good although some need basic English lessons!

To be blatantly honest right from the off, this place was so horribly bad, it just made us laugh from start to finish!!
We didn't actually book this hotel, it just happened that we ended up here due to an administrative error by the owners - Britannia Hotels as mentioned in another review.
Upon arrival at around 1pm, we advised the young lady on reception that we'd arranged an early check-in due to plans we had for the afternoon. I say on reception, although technically that wasn't true - She did come back to the reception desk having left it unmanned for 5 minutes, and us just stood waiting. Not surprisingly, there was no knowledge of our request, and as such we were advised we'd have to wait until "at least 2pm, but it's often a lot later than that", I couldn't believe what I was hearing!!
As we had plans, and needed to leave (without freshening up as planned), we asked to use the luggage room. This didn't exist but we could put our things behind reception, and she'd keep an eye on them for us - This was the same receptionist who'd been AWOL upon our arrival!! Just as I was about to have to explain the awkward issue, we were saved by the news that our room was indeed ready. Not only that but we'd been upgraded to an Executive Room - Things were looking up after all.
Upon arrival at our room, via a rattling lift with cracked lights, we opened the door to the smell that someone had been smoking in the room previously, only it wasn't Marlboro, Regal, or any of your shop-bought cigarettes, in fact it wasn't any cigarette!!
Once we'd started to look around the room itself, we could easily see as to why it was classed as an Executive Room - There was a double bed and three single camp beds in the room, so clearly it's used for board meetings!! Or more realistically, it's just a doss house!!
The room was just very dated, unkept, and in need of a compete redecorate. The light fittings were grubby, with lightbulbs that were too big, and in various places were raw plugs in the wall where clearly a botch job of maintenance work had taken place.
Having gone to our pre-planned engagement that afternoon and into the early evening, we decided to have the dinner that we'd pre-paid for. We needn't have bothered, as by the time we got there, it had been demolished by the several school parties from France and Germany that the hotel was accommodating (and were being allowed to run wild), and we were advised there would be no replenishment - Our dinner was to be a plate of thin-cut fried potatoes and the sauce remaining of the previously served beef bourgignon. So pretty much chips and gravy!!
Needing a drink before we returned to our room, or Woodstock as it became known as, we decided to have a drink in the bar, this proved to be the most comical, entertaining part of the evening. We sat down on one of the sofas, and as my partner leaned in for a romantic cuddle, I moved my arm to put it around her and accidentally banged my elbow on the wall - The whole lights in the bar dimmed in a spooky ghost-like way!! Not convinced it was me who'd done it, I intentionally banged my arm again, and the lights dimmed again!! To say we had fun watching the barman and the few occupied tables look around was an understatement - his suspicions were with the door as I firstly made it happen upon someone coming into the bar, then they were towards the beer pumps, and finally towards the till. I admit this was very childish, but the onus very much is on the dodgy and probably dangerous wiring in the bar.
After doing the wind-up to death, we decided to go to bed, so we could enjoy watching the 15inch TV from 30 feet away in our room.
In a nutshell, and rather than going on about it, this place is horrendous and needs closing down and then knocking down. I'm glad that upon checking out there were several other people with the same complaints - The only down side for them was they had a further 6 nights to endure!! Our crime only sentenced us to 2!!

We stayed over bank holiday weekend and were nervous after the previous reviews read. All I can say is that we had a great time. The room was clean and well presented. We literally just wanted a place me and my daughter could sleep after a great day on the beach and this hotel was good for that. It's basic yes, but for what we paid £29 for the night, great value.
The drinks in the bar were pricy but it's a holiday hotel so expected I guess. Shame the pool was closed for maintenance.
We didnt eat at the hotel as found the menu a little basic, but saw plenty of people eating there.
The corridors were dated and smelt musty but the room we had 0119 was great. We booked a double as o ly me and my young daughter, but when we arrived we had a family room, so little one was pleased she had her own bed.. Smelt clean and fresh and beds were in good condition. Overall a great place to stay

We arrived on the Monday evening. The receptionist had a bit of trouble of locating our booking but I would suggest this was NOT the fault of the hotel but the system by which booking.com works. We had a pet with us which actually stayed for FREE after a bit of negotiating with Britannia Hotels central reservations. YOU CAN'T BOOK WITH THE HOTEL DIRECT be warned, 10p per minute. The hotel was absolutely perfect for us. We only stayed on a room only basis which is all we really need when we go away. A bathroom and a bed. Ok so the wallpaper was starting to peel off the wall in places but that did not bother us. In fact it looked like the room had recently been refurbished and very tastefully I might add. The contact though brief we did have with the staff was friendly and professional. The lady behind the bar was having a conversation with a colleague but she stopped immediately when she saw me approaching, excellent service, a few hotels we have been to in the past could learn from such professionalism. The housekeeping staff are a credit to this hotel. The room was clean and fresh smelling. The window had been left open slightly to allow fresh air in, perfect. We did not require our room to be serviced during our stay but the staff still left us clean towels, a fresh bath mat, comp toiletries and fresh supplies for the comp tea and coffee tray outside our door, EXCELLENT SERVICE. My partner, myself and our pet will be staying here again and we will be passing on our recommendation to others.

We went here on a line dance weekend as a large group
Check in was a complete shamble no one seemed to know what was going on wrong rooms swipe keys not working?

Bedroom:
The room my friend and I shared was in need of decorating but was comfortable. Beds stained but linen clean, television on bracket on wall could not see from bed had to put on unit. bathroom very tired in need of attention. The shower was useless either too hot to cold or no water at all.

Restaurant:
Counters are within a couple of feet of each other, serving starter main and desert and it was complete chaos when everybody turns up at the same time. Trying to eat when people are queuing at the side of you to get their meals was not a pleasant experience. There was a limited choice of buffet meals, the food being just average. The toaster was useless only did one side at a time bread was frozen at breakfast and evening meal, the staff seemed to be in a hurry to remove cutlery and crockery even before guests had finished eating.

Free Wi-Fi but never worked to many people on it we were told
On a more positive note the limited number of staff available throughout the hotel all seemed to be helpful, cheerful and mucking in to get things done. Manager was nonexistent the whole weekend.
Guests were advised to carry their valuables around with them at all times as there had been a number of thefts from rooms on the first floor.
Security was non-existent.
The swimming pool was out of order for the whole weekend.

Java Lounge:
The bar was run down and was not open all day closed in the evening by 10.40pm which is annoying bar staff (one) kept disappearing to get things/make sandwiches as on their own. Staff throughout the hotel all seemed helpful, cheerful and mucking in to get things done but will not be visiting this hotel again
