had a great couple of days at the suncliffe ,staff were friendly and helpful at all times .the room we had was large with a sea view on the second floor it was clean an tidy if a little shabby . my partner found the bed to be to firm for her liking .also the car parking is fairly limited , we had to park on the road outside . breakfast was ok .the biggest plus for the hotel has to be the sunday carvery which was excellent , some of the so called big chains could learn a thing or to here .

We stayed here for one night and would recommend it . Staff were excellent. Our room had a lovely sea view, very clean and comfortable. Food and service good and excellent evening entertainment. Great pity more people did not get up and dance! There was another large family party staying there but everyone just got along and it was quiet at night. Yes the hotel does look 'tired' but that did not detract from our stay and it is lovely walk into Bournemouth and very handy for visiting Poole, Studland, Swanage etc. We would return for another short break.

From reading the other reviews the Suncliffe really is a mixed bag and I think it is a bit of a lottery depending on your room allocation. The hotel seems to attract coach parties and hen/stag parties, which is a bit of an odd combination but the guests all seem to rub along well.

We were in room 214 which had a double and two single beds in it. The mattress on the double was so tired that you went straight down to the base of the bed if you sat on it, whilst the singles were ridiculously hard.

There didn't seem to be any controls for the radiator which was on all night, so we were forced to have the windows open to have any kind of comfortable temperature. However, this meant we were woken up in the early hours of the morning by other guests coming back from a night out.

For our second night we complained to the duty manager who sorted out the heating in our room and we had a much more comfortable night.

We were allocated 3 other rooms for our group of 7, however, we decided not to use room 25 due to the very strong smell of bleach in the room and it was a long way from the rest of our rooms which were on the second floor. We popped down on our second day and it became clear that the reason there was a strong smell of bleach was to try to mask the terrible smell from the bathroom drains. They clearly knew there was a problem as they had put so much bleach down so it is not clear why they thought it was appropriate to allocate the room to paying guests.

The pool area was OK, changing rooms were cold and not very clean.

Breakfast was good and plentiful, although something was clearly wrong with the juices. On the first day the juice was very sweet - as if it was pure concentrate and no water, and on the second it was too watery!

I was travelling with a group of girls and we got a good price for the rooms we had, but if I was to come back to Bournemouth I'd book somewhere else.

First of all the staff where top class pity the Hotel wasn't , it was tired old in need of modernisation in fact it wants so much doing to it it would be best to knock it down and start again . The furniture in the rooms was all dark wood , bath taps not working I complained nothing done I was not the only one who had this problem . We were with a large group and the general complaints were TVS not working taps not working heating uncontrollable to hot . The Hotel was like a greenhouse all the staff could say was "theirs nothing we can do" . Corridors everywhere like a rabbit warren .Waste of money choose a modern Hotel

Room Tip: Don't have a ground floor room to noisy

rcarley, Assistant Manager at The Suncliff Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded 3 March 2014

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us, I’m sorry it seems that the hotel was not to your taste. The Suncliff is a traditional style seaside hotel and makes no claim to be the most modern. I have reviewed the maintenance log book of issues that were raised over the last weekend and there is only one regarding a tap and none regarding televisions so I’m unsure of who else in your party was dissatisfied in this area. I find your comment about the corridors quite odd, the Suncliff Hotel is a large building, a natural consequence of this is long corridors in order to access all the bedrooms. We pride ourselves on the level of customer service we deliver to our guests, and I am certain that no member of staff would dismiss a genuine complaint with a comment of “there’s nothing we can do”. We welcome the use of Trip Advisor as a forum to gather constructive feedback from a guest perspective, but your suggestion of knocking the hotel down and rebuilding it again is neither constructive nor financially viable.
Regards,
Tom Pinn, Assistant Manager

We visited for 4 nights on a 'Just Go' coach trip. As other reviews say the bedrooms vary. We were allocated a room that was at the back and very small for a stay of 4 nights, but we asked if there was an alternative and were given a more spacious room on the 4th floor at the front.
Considering there were 4 coaches visiting when we were there Mon 24 Feb to Fri 28th, the organisation of the dining was amazing. The food was well prepared and varied and the staff were extremely efficient and friendly.
We have stayed in many hotels around the world and were very impressed with the organisation, friendliness, efficiency and standard that we received in the dining room at breakfast and dinner times, bearing in mind the cost to us and numbers that they were catering for.

We were initially booked in to stay at The Cliffeside, but with some mix up or other, we were directed (and upgraded) to stay at the The Suncliff Hotel in the penthouse suite Zara. The room was impressive and lovely, and we really couldn't have asked for a better view - made all the more impressive by the excellent weather.

With four of us staying, the room was provided with the adequate bedspace - one kingsized bed, one pull-out sofabed and a fold-out single bed. The room was comfortable, the facilities were excellent. We made good use of the tea and coffee making facilities, and at times when we ran out, the staff in the lobby were more than accommodating when we asked for, say, more milk.

After our night's rest, we spent a good few hours on the balcony basking in the morning sun, and simply enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of our stay.

The location was excellent, and when we required taxi services to venues we were attending, the lobby staff were prompt and efficient with calling the taxis to the hotel. We waited no-more than five to ten minutes for their arrival from calling the lobby from our room. With the taxi services in mind, the hotel is in an excellent location and central to all the main attractions of the town.

The breakfast was delicious and the options were adequate for out vegetarian needs, although some of the options advertised were not available. I was personally delighted to start my day with some white tea, an option rarely available.

The issues were minimal and didn't affect our stay in any major way. The control panel for the room's blinds were not functioning (or perhaps we did something wrong?), but as we needed to rise early, it worked out alright. This probably needs looking at, however.
Being in the location the room was and hotel is in (fourth floor, beachfront), sleeping was rather difficult, partly to do with the wind, but more to do with the window-wall rattled which rattled to such a degree it gave some of those staying with me cause for concern. The furniture on the balcony was also being blown over quite loudly. Though this cannot be helped with the weather, I wonder if some for of weighting, restraints etc. could be employed during certain weather patterns.
The water from the tap was rather unpalatable, but the staff in the Atlantis Restaurant were helpful and very understanding when we asked for some jugs of water.
The hot water tab of the bathroom was broken / loose (not secured to the main devise), but nonetheless worked with some fiddling.
We were a little confused with the frosted window between the bathroom and bedroom that was placed between the bath / shower and the top of the main bed. Not assuming that all guests will be couples (as we weren't), it was a bit of a surprise to see the shape of one of our fellow guests showering while we were sitting on the balcony, as we hadn't immediately noticed the window!

I cannot commend the staff enough. Everybody was polite and helpful, hospitality was to a very high standard. Though we were occasionally embarrassed with some of our requests (a British problem!), we were put very much at ease. More than anything, I think this shone out as the jewel of our stay.

Highly recommended.
