Owner description: Private home of extensive travelers Sir Merton Russell-Cotes and his wife Lady Annie was one of the last Victorian manor houses ever built.

We had previously been to visit this house and were passing so decided to pop in again. The last time we visited it was free but the council have now decided to charge £5 per person, so we promptly turned around and went somewhere else. This house was a gift to the local authority who seem to just want to turn it into a cash cow as the place is even more dilapidated than last time and the only change we could see since our last visit was a huge amount spent on introducing charging measures - a posh cash collecting reception, a coffee shop and souvenir shop. If they were to spend that same amount on the building itself it wouldn't be in the terrible state they have allowed it to get into. We believe all museums should be have free entry as they are part of our heritage, not corporate cash generators.

The house is an architectural gem and there is some stunning art work and views of the pier. As a bonus, a really excellent cate with fresh sandwiches and yummy cakes.

We enjoyed this gallery last time we were in Bournemouth so went back a second time. Still very good although this time one of the galleries was closed. Wonderful house so don't just look at the stuff in it. Wonderful Pre-Raph gallery and stained glass. The views of Bournemouth are wonderful.

I love this quirky private collection housed in the home the husband of the collecting couple built for his wife as a token of his affection in accordance with his own tastes, he wrote.
His tastes were clearly very influenced by the latest fashions of the day and by great social aspiration. The whole thing is slightly comical but also endearing: the Russell Coteses come across the dividing decades vividly, obsessed with celebrities, wanting to build a noble residence but loving a risque painting (I cannot help but think they quite liked a bit of role play) influenced by the trendy design magazines of the day, thrilled with the tourist tat they accumulated on their extensive and impressive travels yet building a rather good house to show them off in, beautifully set overlooking the still stunning golden sands of Bournemouth.
It is getting to know them and the stunning views and the fact they seem happy together that I love about this museum rather than the slightly sentimental/snobby/risqué artifacts but there are a few great items, it is a quirky, fabulous visit and an interior design fail on a spectacular scale.
The cafe is comfortable, light and has delicious cappuccino. The other refreshments looked good too and there were some pretty cards in the gift shop.

I'm so glad we found out about this place! The museum and gallery is set in a lovely Victorian building, each room contains a multitude of paintings, statues and other beautiful things. Almost every inch, from floor to ceiling, is adorned.

The staff were friendly and helpful, they let you take an many pictures as you like and it was only £5 each to get in. Highly recommended.
