“Terrific value and quality”
Reviewed 13 August 2011

We stayed as part of a golf trip and highly recommend this Hotel. The 2 receptionists were very welcoming, friendly and efficient. They had told me right at the outset that they have 2 lively popular bars and they have! The noise didn't really travel up to the 2nd floor and certainly didn't prevent us having a great stay. The breakfast was of very high quality and a match for any 5 star hotel. A Hotel I shall definitely stay at again on our next golf trip to the Bournemouth area. Particular praise to the receptionist.

On face value the Royal Exeter appears to be a nice, well kept hotel. That is until you decide to sleep. All doors in tube corridor slam and you can hear the music downstairs until 2am (there was no warning when I booked that I could only hope for half a nights sleep). To make it worse twice through the night the fire alarm went off for 5 seconds. Enough to scare you out of your wits, just in case you were able to sleep. When I phoned reception on the second occasion, they informed me that they were just "testing" the fire alarm. This all together seems a little odd give it was 1am. At this hotel there appears to be no concern for what sleep, if any, you get after paying for a bed. The one and only positive for this hotel is the breakfast, which you sorely need after the crap nights sleep you've had!

Unfortunately during the early hours of Sunday 31st July 2011 a false alarm was triggered from a fire alarm call point. The fire alarm system was reset but unfortunately the fault was not immediately cleared and the sirens sounded again. In respect of guest safety it is not possible for us to leave our fire detection system turned off overnight. We sincerely apologise for the disturbance caused to all our guests form this rare and unusual event.

Our two bars and our a la carte restaurant are open to both hotel residents and the general public and are very busy particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings. We do our best to inform all guests about potential noise disturbance either at the time of their booking or via the information contained on hotel booking websites. We apologise for any disturbance experienced by our guests and, as on this occasion, the missed opportunities to explain and inform you about the potential noise disturbance.

I would thoroughly recommend this hotel for the quality of the service, cleanliness and food. All staff in the reception, bar, restaurant, housekeeping were to be congratulated on great customer service. Food in the restaurant is of the very best quality both for breakfast and certainly for dinner. Also the proximity of the hotel to beach, BIC, shops etc is great. Only big downside is please dont come and stay here on a Friday and Saturday and expect a quiet seat in a lounge after dinner. This hotel is the mecca for the young of Bournemouth due to a great bar and club and therefore is very noisy. Also be aware that some bedrooms (ours being one) have the noise coming from the club quite late into the night.

Room Tip: Ask before you book about noise from the disco

Visited the Royal Exeter and stayed for 2 nights with my wife and 4 month old boy. This was our 3rd visit to the hotel and we will definitely be going back! The service was fantastic, the staff are incredibly friendly and very welcoming. The food in the restaurant is of very high standard and we love 1812 (and their cocktails!). Our room was excellent and very big, ideal for all the baggage we take with a small child. Thumbs up for the breakfast too! Location is ideal, just a short walk from the beach and town centre - a very relaxing break, loved it!

We have always stayed at The Royal Exeter Hotel in Bournemouth but on this occasion were extremely disappointed. After our evening out we returned to the hotel to find a long queue of people trying to get into the disco. There are 2 bars one alongside the hotel and one inside the hotel - both these were noisy with loudly blarring music. There were no bars for residents use only. We had to sit in a corner in the hotel lobby. We were looking forward to enjoying cocktails in the bar. Our room was noisy although we had requested a quiet room. We had to keep the window closed and could still hear the noise. As a result we did not sleep well as the room was stuffy and the noise went on until round 2am. We complained and the manager refunded us £20.00 per room but this does not help the fact that we did not have an enjoyable night.
The hotel should be called a nightclub with rooms as that is what it is. They have no regard for hotel guests. We will not return.

l am a regular visitor to the Royal Exeter, due to Business Trips l have to make.

1) The Location could not be better. l min from the beach and central for getting to and from so many other places.
2) The reception you receive is professional, friendly and very co-operative.

3) The standard of fixtures and fittings is of the highest. The biggest compliment is that it is 'home from home', that is from the lounge areas, through to the Bars and Restaurant and the Rooms. Everything you need is there.

4)The quality of Food is exceptional . Highly recommended.

5) The whole team of staff throughtout the Hotel is fantastic. They are friendly, professional, and are happy in their work.

The whole experience of staying at The Royal Exeter is of the highest standard without being to 'snobby' which can happen. l thoroughly recommend it and commend Harry Brewer and his team for what they provide.
