“Horrible”

The experience I had at Spindles Leisure Centre, part of the Britannia Hotel is one that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I have never felt so angry, upset or embarrassed due to the actions of a stranger, this one being the manager of above mentioned establishment.
We were holidaying in Bournemouth a couple of months ago and one morning we were walking into the town and decided to stop for a coffee. There were 6 of us and we each had 3 drinks and a cake each in the space of about 90 minutes.

All of a sudden, a horrible rude woman came to our table and shouted at us to leave immediately. She said the outside area was for hotel guests only and when I reminded her the sign at the entrance clearly states ‘everybody welcome’ she became very aggressive she said it doesn’t apply when there is an air show on (that wasn’t due to start for at least 3 hours) then she pushed her face very close to mine and informed me that if we didn’t leave she’d be happy to make us. (I will mention at this point we weren’t a bunch of rowdy teenagers causing trouble. Our group consisted of a couple in our thirties, and elderly couple and two quiet, well behaved children)

The whole ordeal was distressing and embarrassing for all of us and I can imagine from the sympathetic looks we received it was also upsetting for many of the people who witnessed it, one hotel guest who has also been quizzed and asked to prove evidence of his stay - told us loudly that we ought to put in a complaint, within earshot of the manager who stomped off.

We tried to call Britannia Hotels ‘customer service’ team who couldn’t even pretend to give two hoots about what I was saying. I was told all complaints must be in writing, and even when you do put it in writing apparently don’t expect to ever hear a response.

Booked a weekend at this hotel and then read the reviews on here so needless to say was a little anxious. Yes, the decor is dated and shabby and in need of re-furbishment. However, on the plus side, all the staff we dealt with - reception, night security, breakfast - were all friendly, polite and eager to help. We had 2 rooms, #402 and #403, both were clean and with partial sea views. Nice toiletries too. We were there on what must have been their quietest weekend ever (first wkend in Jan, Dorset experiencing violent weather) so the place lacked atmosphere but that didn't really matter to us as we were in our own group.
For what we paid - £142 for two rooms for two nights including breakfast - can't complain about the value. This was booked via hoteldirect.co.uk and rooms were classed as Superior.
Didn't use, or even view, the pool so can't comment on that.
Didn't use the bar or the dining room (other than buffet style breakfast)
Great location, one block back from East Cliff so really close to the beach and easy walking distance from the centre.
Would we stay there again? With so much choice in that area we would probably choose somewhere else - unless we couldn't find anywhere with on site parking and in such a good location.

Had great hopes for the hotel, booked as a groupon offer booked in to the hotel, greeted after a short wait by non uniformed foreign receptionist. Surroundings were plain uninteresting and a little shabby in the reception. We were on the third floor with a sea view ( was my partners birthday treat) Took one of the 2 very small old passenger lifts that really were in need of a good clean, the carpets were in an appalling condition. Exited on the third floor to a worn carpet poor wall paper and badly scratched woodwork. Entered the room and again were greeted with a drab interior, some rather oppressive pictures, a window that opened much too far. Generally quite a let down: evening meal was like returning to school dinners, with everything bought in rather prepared in house.
In the dining area the wall paper was peeling off!

On the whole quite disappointed as we had upgraded to a superior room too.

A cheap rather run down holiday hotel suitable for those on a tight budget, don't be fooled into thinking you are getting good value for money although one must bear in mind it is only a 2 star. It could be elevated to at least a 3 or maybe a 4 but a considerable sum of money would be needed to do so. Oh and the sea view was just visible as trees blocked it on one side and a large block of flats On the other.

We returned from Bournemouth two days ago after a weekend at the Britannia. We went with National Holidays so we cant complain about the price we paid.
As some of the reviews say the hotel is dated and our bathroom could have done with a good clean. But the bedding was clean and the room lovely and warm so we think you got what you pay for.The food was lovely and the staff very helpful. It even had a 99p a pint offer on every night for three hours.
All this hotel needs is a bit of TLC and a bit of leadership to show the staff how to clean a bit better.

Room Tip: take your own bathroom cleaner.

We were worried about stay beforehand due to reviews, but were pleasantly surprised. Spacious/clean superior room/modern bathroom. Bed comfy, Warm rooms throughout, yes, in parts a little tired, but for the money you pay good value overall. Staff friendly/helpful and food v.good. Good location. If you want top quality Hotel throughout, pay for it else where. Otherwise give it a go and upgrade to a superior room.

Room Tip: we had 307 3rd floor

Pictures look ok and when we pulled up at the hotel it looks like it should be shut down. Absolutely disgusting really we didn't even want to walk through the doors to find out what it was like outside as we saw enough of filthy net curtains and dirt from outside in the car. And the free cancellation what a con, still got to pay money for it even though cancelled before time specified and they didn't reply back with confirmation till late that even what a disgrace
