“A typical town centre square/ ice rink.”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

The Bournemouth square is the crossing of the two halves of the shopping area, separated by the rather nice pleasure gardens.

The square is a busy place, with buses and stalls and sometimes entertainment being offered.

But alas it has two major problems.

#1 It is dangerous.

Yes strong words, but the polished stone slabs used are incredibly slippy when wet. You quite often will spot people slipping over. In wintery conditions it is treacherous and I would not even attempt to cross it.

#2 It is blinding

When wet and with the sun in the right place, the square is blinding. You literally cannot see where you are going!

How did the council get this so wrong? The slabs are like a kitchen worktop. Smooth and shiny.

Ridiculous.

“A Buzzing Hub which is largely traffic free”

Essential conduit for walking and cycling access to shops, buses, parks, restaurants etc. Always some street theatre going on, which may make you pause for a while or walk smartly on!

“The Square is an "attraction"?!”
Reviewed 13 May 2014 via mobile

The Square in Bournemouth is merely a point where the streets come together in the centre of the town. There is an awful cafe run by the council in the middle of this small pedestrianised area.

In the winter the German market is located here and worth a visit and there's sometimes some little displays but mainly it's full of youths, charity workers, leaflet givers and people walking to the shops. How this is listed as an attraction is beyond me. It's like listing a roundabout or a pavement as an attraction. Very strange.

“Day not Night”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

The square can be fairly vibrant during the day and early evening with singers and street artists, but like most places these days it gets full of down and outs, beggars and the homeless, and you can get pestered.
