Our son David and his new wife Danni held their wedding reception at the family run Liston Hotel on Friday 30th September. As well as a wonderfully warm and sunny day, the welcome we received at the hotel was equally warm and sunny. Diane and all her staff were brilliant - helpful and professional in every way; giving our special day a relaxed, personal, and family atmosphere. Diane had met with us several times previously to discuss our requirements and wishes and went out of her way to fulfil them for us.

The outside appearance belies the hotel’s Edwardian origins and the reception rooms were delightful - original tiled entrance hall and stained glass art nouveau windows abound. The large reception room has a bar and dance area, leading out onto the decking area and garden, but also has smaller, more intimate rooms linking to the main room and these offered quieter areas for conversation away from the music, if so desired. Dave and Danni had opted to provide their own music and they just plugged their ipod into the existing music system. The more modern dining room was a lovely setting to display Diane’s wonderful food.

Dave and Danni had selected a buffet reception and the food was exceptional, many people commented on how good the food was. They chose a variety of food, both hot and cold, including meats, salads and pastries. The vegetarian options were especially good. Diane is proud of the food offered at the Liston and rightly so.

Several quests booked to stay over and our rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable. Breakfast the next morning was another chance to sample the hotel’s good food.

We were very surprised to read the reviews from a recent wedding party. We can only say that our experience was completely different. We would like to thank Diane and her staff for helping to make our celebration such a special day – Nothing was too much trouble. Thank you.

We would not hesitate to recommend The Liston Hotel and plan to book again for an 80th birthday celebration next year.

Room Tip: Plans are in the pipeline to add balconies to some of the rooms overlooking the garden.

My new wife and I recently got married locally and hired The Liston Hotel for our reception. Our plan for our reception was that we wanted to hold a relaxed gathering for our friends and family in a cosy setting with a unique feel, near the beach, with good food and good service.

We got EVERYTHING that we wanted.

The food was absolutely fantastic and at a fantastic price. My wife is a vegetarian which - with many restaurants and hotels - can sometimes means a lack of variety and quality. Diane put this fear to bed completely though and laid on a fantastic variety of tasty foods that took care of both vegetarian and meat-eaters alike. We met with Diane Gilbey (the owner) on a few occasions before the day to talk about the menu and we had a list of some favourite items that we would like to be served. Diane was more than happy to oblige - as she was when we asked if some of my favourite beers could be sourced for the bar. Again - nothing was too much trouble.

The hotel's interior belies it's plainer exterior. Beautiful Victorian and Edwardian features and quirks are everywhere in the bar and function room. The restaurant also has a lovely seaside theme to it too. Our room and all the other rooms we saw were modern, spotless and well supplied - a recent refurbishment had done a great job.

Diane and her staff were fantastic throughout - every single person was friendly, helpful and courteous - a brilliant job done by all.

The bottom line for us is that this place suited exactly what we wanted for our reception. And if we needed anything at all - both before and during our stay - Diane and her team were there with no problems and a smile on their faces.

So thank you to everyone at The Liston Hotel!

Any hotel that works hard to provide high standards deserves credit. I liked the Liston Hotel. We stayed there as members of a wedding party. The bar and garden areas were lovely spaces, and the buffet food provided in the evening was excellent, lots of home-made tasty choices. The wine list has a good list of quality wines at very reasonable prices, and a good choice of beers. Breakfast was fine - as you would expect. We stayed in one of their newly refurbished double rooms, and it was superb - congratulations on the attention to detail. The hotel is in a good location close to Boscombe beach but in a quiet road. I cannot comment on the older rooms in the hotel but my party had 3 refurbished rooms and all were of same high standard.

Room Tip: Go for the refurbished rooms - they might cost a bit extra but they are excellent.

As soon as me and my friends arrived here we were told that if we would have phoned and not booked online we would have been turned down on the basis that there was a wedding! This was not a good start! There are ways of saying things without making you feel unwelcome! The room me and a friend stayed in was not bad but the 2 others stayed in a room from the 60s/70s! the food was ok but all in all a bit pony! fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuceeeeeeeeeee x

We were the hosts of the wedding party and overall we had a very good time. Our room was great (plenty of soap, how much do you need for one night?). The food was very good both for the buffet and breakfast. The welcoming drinks were served 10- 15 mins after the requested time but that was the only niggle that we have.
The disco was not good but again that wasn't the hotel's fault and I will take that up with the provider of the entertainment.
When we were planning this event Diane Gilbey and her family were most helpful, don't let some of the other comments put you off booking this hotel.

Room Tip: Some rooms are still being refurbished, check when booking.

The weather was dismal but the welcome was warm. The room was very comfortable and
the food was excellent. I understand that the restaurant is renowned in the area and quite
rightly so. There was a wedding party on the Saturday which made quite a bit of noise
late in the evening with door banging etc., but that was not the fault of the hotel and,
under the circumstances, one was prepared to put up with that. The gardens looked
delightful although because of the weather I could not use them. I would happily return.

Starting on a good note, our room was lovely, well presented and clean.

From this point it starts to go down hill. I had come to stay at the Liston for my brother's wedding celebration, so we were very upbeat and positive about the occasion, this sadly did not last long.
The welcoming drinks were not prepared and served until after guests had already started arriving. The staff were not welcoming and if we approached them for anything it was greeted with a negative responce.
We had an 'in house' DJ who failed to play any music that had been requested and planned for the evening in advance. When asked if the music could be played at a quieter volume at one point in the evening we were ignored.
This was a family function including elderly relatives and young children, we were not looking for a night club atmosphere.

In the morning we went down for breakfast at 8.30am only to be greeted with 'how did you get in here' from a member of staff !
We were then told that breakfast was not being served yet and we were to wait in the lobby.

Very disappointed, especially for my friends and family who had travelled quite some distance - including all the way from Uruguay to be part of what should have been a very special day.
