“Secluded b&b, amazing views of the beautiful Dorst coast”
Reviewed 18 March 2013

Just returned from a very relaxing and peaceful weekend at this bed and breakfast. We were pleasantly surprised as we both felt the website did not do the house justice or the setting which is definately it's main selling point. If you want to spend a few days feeling like you are really away from the city this place is definately recommended. We went for a long coastal walk to Lulworthcove and had a lovely lunch there before heading back to relax at the house and enjoy the views from our room.
The hosts provided a lovely breakfast and gave us guidance on suitable walks and place to visit. Hope to go back in warmer weather.

We stayed at Marren for three nights over the New Year period having stayed here a couple of years previously. The peace and solitude are unrivalled. The view of the bay from the room is fantastic. Peter's eggs are like no other we have tasted, having sampled many in the quest. And he and Wendy are always on hand with suggestions for days out - take decent walking boots. Make sure you reach it by turning off the main road (signpost Beach Cafe) and carry on through Ringstead Bay National Trust land - the other way that sat nav insists upon is a bit treacherous in parts. Smugglers Inn reasonable food. Also ventured to the Wild Garlic in Beaminster, run by a previous masterchef winner, for more of a foodie experience.

We arrived on a cold and damp November evening and found Peter and Wendy's house to be a warm and welcoming retreat. Our bedroom was very comfortable with spectacular views which are best enjoyed from the bed. The bathroom was large and well appointed with a window over the garden from which we saw many different types of birds.

Peter was very helpful with suggestions and tips for places to visit and we both hope to stay at Marren again.

We had a very enjoyable couple of nights at Marren. High points: the stunning view of the bay from the bedroom window, skinny dipping in the sea on a beach just a short walk from the house, a tasty breakfast enjoyed in a beautiful dining room looking out onto the garden. The house is lovely and characterful, and the interior is obviously created by someone with an excellent eye -yet it also has the comfortable feel of a loved family home. Peter and Wendy Cartwright were friendly and helpful - we took up a few of Peter's suggestions for things to do on our full day and had a great day.
I loved the fact that it is tucked away - it isn't really hard to find: you just have to trust the directions.

Tricky to find (you must follow the directions to the letter!) but well worth every pothole and dip on the tracks leading to it. Marren House offers complete peace and quiet (providing you value the dawn chorus in the spring) and a lovely welcome from Wendy and Peter Cartwright.
Peter cooks the wonderful breakfasts and Wendy is the garden designer (which is enormous and amazing).
There were no other guests during our stay so we did feel 'extra special' on this trip.
The house is very close to the coast path and a good centre for all the Dorset attractions,
Eating out in the evening involves a drive. The closest place is the Smugglers Inn at Osmington Mills which was very crowded (as is usual I'm told) and therefore a long wait for a table. Food was only average at best - something which has been frequently noted by others.
There are good restaurants in Weymouth though (about 7miles)

Room Tip: For a stunning view of the sea and Portland Bill go for the 'front' bedroom. The 'back...

Lovely stay at Marren over a wet weekend. Peter and Wendy very welcoming and made arrangements for a late arrival and early start, fixing breakfast for us before our race. The room was superb with spectacular views over the bay. Slightly difficult to find at first but there is an easier way which avoids the bumpy road at the end of Holworth. Excellent full English on Sunday morning. We had a great time and would definitely return.

Room Tip: Ask for the room with a view over the bay.

We had a lovely stay at Marren. Its location is very special, but also rather isolated and therefore a bit difficult to reach. It will take you about 15 minutes from the main road but this ensures you that you will only hear the sound of the sea....
Inside the house you are surrounded by beautiful things to look at, even in the bathroom!
We were welcomed by Joyce, the housekeeper, and she looked after us very well.

Room Tip: We didn;'t have "the room with a view", but ours was much bigger and had an integral s...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Overlooking the sea between Lulworth Cove and Weymouth is a house called Marren. Surrounded by National Trust land, Marren is set in a large garden on a steep slope with spectacular views of Portland and Weymouth Bay. The only sounds are of waves breaking and the cries of buzzards. We are seven minutes from a secluded beach to the east of Ringstead and five minutes from the Dorset Coastal Path which leads to Bats Head, Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove. It is the perfect place for walking, seeing wildlife and breathtaking views of sea and cliffs. We have two en-suite double bedrooms. The larger one has its own entrance from the garden and a super kingsize bed; the smaller one has a spectacular view of Portland and Weymouth Bay through french windows from the bed. We can recommend a selection of excellent restaurants and pubs for eating out, plus help with local maps and directions for walks. ... more   less
