“Always a great stay.”
Reviewed 5 June 2013

This was the fourth time we've stayed at The Casterbridge, but the first time since Monica and Melvin have been the owners. We always enjoyed our stay on previous visits, but they've improved the experience because it feels more homely and intimate now, with their welcoming spirit and hospitality. It's lovely and very clean, with a traditional English feel to it. Breakfast was delicious and fresh, in a large, airy, and comfortable breakfast room. We love exploring Dorset and we look forward to staying here again, hopefully in the very near future.

I had a Bowls England game in Dorchester and booked into the Casterbridge for 2 nights, in order to have time to look around Dorchester. What a good decision that was. The owners, Monica and Melvin made us feel at home immediately, they could not have been better. The building itself is full of history, was once a prison in the 1700's. Our room was very comfortable and lacked for nothing. The water was hot and the towels scrummy. We really enjoyed our stay and have every intention of returning.

Room Tip: The hotel is on the main road, so there is traffic noise at the front.

This was are first visit to Dorset and stayed at the Casterbridge for 3 nights over the week end. After a long drive from Oxford, we were greeted with a Warm welcome and a friendly smile from the Owners Monica and Melvin. The en suite bedroom was very clean, fresh and airy with tea and coffee making facilities, free WiFi and clean linen. Breakfast was first class with a wide range of fresh fruit and berries and the best full English breakfast i have eaten in a long time, all fresh local produce from within Dorset wonderful. The breakfast staff were smartly dressed, polite, courteous and attentive at all times. The Casterbridge is within walking distance to all local services, so i parked my car at there nearby off road parking facilities for my entire visit free of charge try getting that in London ! Customer service was first class with nothing to much trouble for the friendly staff. This is a Bed and Breakfast which is professionally run and where the Guest always comes first. I think the person who wrote the previous comments has got her Bed and Breakfast mixed up because my stay was simply perfect. Looking forward to my next visit to Dorset and staying at the Casterbridge.

Stayed here for just one night, so cannot comment on too much as we were just wanting a bed for the night.
The room was nice although a little small had everything you would need, although we couldn't get the WiFi to work. The bathroom was small but again had nice quality towels and little sachets of shampoo etc.
It being a Saturday night we could hear the band playing in the pub a few doors up but luckily they finished by midnight.
Breakfast in the morning was lovely with good choices and food cooked well, although the room was quite cold. Friendly staff and not too intrusive.
Overall it was a nice stay but felt at £99 it was slightly overpriced for what it was.

We always book a weekend away at this time of year as a time to catch up with our siblings and remember our dear departed Mum, so this year we chose Dorchester and the Casterbridge hotel for 2 nights. We booked 5 double rooms for the 10 of us and had a lovely stay. Some of us were in the rooms in the older part, one even had a 4-poster bed, and one couple had a room in the newer part in the garden area. All the rooms were very comfortable, the staff were very friendly and efficient and there was lots of choice, plentry of fresh fruit, cereals and you could order just what you wanted from the cooked breakfast menu. The best bit for us; we were able to use the lounge for our pre and post dinner chats and drinks (take your own and they lend you glasses and even wash them up for you!) - it was like home from home. We were made to feel most welcome at all times.

We stayed at the hotel mid-week with a group of friends so managed to see two other rooms in addition to our own. Our room was at the front of the hotel overlooking the high street. We had previously seen other trip advisor comments that said these rooms suffered from traffic noise so we were a bit aprehensive when we discovered we were at the front but the windows had secondary double glazing so we were not disturbed by the traffic. The room was a good size, warm and bright and as part of the original building had some character. Two of our friends were at the back of the hotel in a more recently built section and modern design, they were on the ground floor and had a small outside sitting area and although far from the traffic they could hear people in adjacent rooms quite clearly. The hotel was very central to our needs but the private parking facility was about 3 or 4 minutes walk so we were glad we did not have too many bags.

Room Tip: If you are average height then the rooms at the front are really nice but doorways are low so if you...

The Casterbridge is very clean and comfortable, staff extremely helpful and service was first class. We had a double room at the front of the hotel and the noise from traffic was quite loud.
Even more noise from the seagulls but there is not an awful lot that can be done about either.
The cost of our stay for one night was £150 which we felt was expensive but we were in town for a
wedding and needed somewhere central to stay, so I guess this is what you have to pay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the rear of the hotel so to miss the traffic noise
