I stayed here as a base to see Dorset, and for that, it was fantastic. I slept well in a pleasant room & had a brilliant breakfast.
The room was on the busy high street though, which doesn't bother me. But if you're thinking of the quiet Dorset idyll, it's not that. This is a busy town.
Just to clarify the car park - I rang and asked if they have a private car park, to which they answered yes. When I got there, that's just not true.
You can park on a pricey meter outside, to unload, then park in the public carpark a short walk away. Here I paid £8ish, for a 3 day pass, which covered all the public carparks in the area. It worked out OK.

I have stayed at the casterbridge now on more than one occasion. The Staff are extremly friendly and helpful during arrival, The rooms are to an excellent standard, very clean, comfortable and modern, and the Breakfast served in the morning is out of this world. The B&B looks and feels very relaxing, and peaceful. I look forward to working in Dorchester, due to the overnight stay in the Casterbridge.

Well appointed room, friendly hostess. Car park is about 100 yards away (main street of Dorchester is no parking). Very pleasant guest lounge and lovely well presented breakfast made this a great place to stay.

We travelled to Dorchester to visit Thomas Hardy's Cottage. This little hotel was just the job. Furniture and decor could have been in one of Hardy's novels. Expected to meet Gabrial Oak sitting next to the fire. Quaint, Picturesque welcoming and comfortable. Small, delightful garden area leading to the annex. Meg was helpful on arrival and booked us in to the nearby La Caverna Italian Restaurant, interestingly located in a cellar and just round the corner. Had too many beers listening to live music by 'Toned-F' in the Borough Arms, used the key to get back into the hotel, slept well and woke to a huge breakfast served by freindly staff. The car had to be parked around the corner with sufficient funds pumped into the meter to last until midday but no problem.

My partner and I stayed here - and the welcome was initially very friendly and helpful. However, on getting back late that night and finding our front door key wouldn't work and having to go check into another hotel at 1am (the Wessex 200metres up the road - which was excellent) we were treated on our return the next morning by the brusque receptionist as if we were idiots. The hotel is completely unmanned at night. The receptionist said there was simply nothing wrong with the door and phoned the manager in front of us, asking him 'how she should play this complaint?'. Quite appalling standards of customer service.
They failed to respond to our telephone messages left late that night, and have since not answered any e-mails regarding our complaint. I was really looking forward to a stay at this hotel, and will not be returning or recommending it to anyone else!

A last minute booking for a busy easter weekend we were surprised to find a vacancy in this hotel described by the lonely planet as a lovely upmarket Georgian Guesthouse. It has a more recent annex out the back where we were put and I only can hope the rooms in the main building are of higher quality. The room was small, decor tired, all quite dated. The breakfast and service was better. However we could not get passed the tarif- It was way overpriced, for something that was only just average.

I agree with the reviewer who said The Casterbridge is like a guest house pretending to be a hotel. When we arrived, we were airily informed that there was no car park and directed to a public car park several hundred yards away in a back street without security. My explanation that my partner was disabled and that we would therefore be unable to stay was rudely dismissed and fully payment demanded - and so I had to pay £89 without getting past the entrance. I recommend The Kings Arms, 100 yards up the road.
