“Tranquil Escape!”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

Just returned from a 2 night stay at Yalbury Cottage. What a fabulous experience!
We were greeted on arrival and shown to our room, which overlooked the pretty garden.
Next was afternoon drinks on the patio as the weather was great.
Dinner started with canapes in the lounge, where you are invited to peruse the menu.
There is a variety of choice to suit all palates, and everything is locally sourced.
The meal was a truly wonderful experience, as this is where the owner's passion lies!
Breakfast was equally great ( the scambled eggs and smoked salmon were to die for!!)
Would thoroughly recommend for a complete 'indulgent' escape!
Thanks to Jamie and his very professional team!

We stayed 2 nights in March in Yalbury Cottage while exploring "Hardy Country" and the Jurasic Coast. This is an extremely beautiful area, and Yalbury Cottage is a very convenient location. The rooms are cozy and nice...but the most outstanding feature is the restaurant...it is fabulous! The breakfasts are good, but the dinners are really special...and you get a bit of a discount if you are a 'house guest'. We visited lots of National Trust properties in the area, and the Trust employees, recognizing our American 'accent', asked us where we were staying. When we told the, "Yalbury Cottage"...every one of them said..."Their restaurant is my favorite place to eat!"---it really is good! We especially enjoyed the deserts...and we tried several! It is wonderful to have a nice, relaxing and delicious dinner in a quiet little village, and then walk back to your room---a lovely stay.

We stayed overnight as it is situated in a convenient location for an early ferry from Weymouth.
We were extremely well looked after with friendly efficient service. Our bedroom was well supplied, with extra touches such as home-made biscuits and fresh milk being particularly appreciated.
The food was interesting and tasty. We invited an elderly relative to dine with us. We were all looked after superbly, this included addressing individual dietary requirements and ordering a taxi at the end of the evening. W e were made to feel very welcome and would definitely use again.

Such a great little break where we were made to feel very welcome. In all honesty we went for the food as heard it was impressive.

We took the dog with us as we thought £7.50 was reasonable especially as we could take him for a nice walk which we did on a route recommended by the staff. The hotel is on the perimeter of a local college which has some stunning buildings and grounds to see, all circled round a picturesque small lake in the middle.

The room was nicely sized and had quality to it. The fixtures and fittings well made and gave the room a comfortable feel. Even the tea, coffee and biscuits you get are to a high standard which is great to see, skimping on things like that gives you an insight on the hoteliers attitude I've come think.

The dinner was superb. Actually unbelievable for the price we paid for the whole weekend with food included.
We had a drinks reception in a warm, comfortable lounge area of the cottage, which back in the 16th century looked like it could've been the stable part but now very nicely refurbed out.

The food was created with some skill. The menu is different every night and can't remember when I had duck as good as that. Each course felt like it had the chefs personal touch and being a different menu every night, quite easy to see.

Breakfast in the morning just as good, the full English was classic yet nice touches such as tomatoes still on the vine, homemade black pudding, baked beans cooked with a sweet taste of honey, homemade hash brown, etc.
This 'personal' input to the cooking showed in every course.

A fantastic, comfortable stay with very friendly staff which we strongly recommend.

We chose Yalbury cottage from the internet because we were going to see our grand daughter at a dressage competition at Kingston Maurward. If you are looking for somewhere convenient for there or Dorchester this is the place. Literally 5mins by car to the show ground.
It is very easy to find, coming from the east on the A35 it is just off the roundabout for Dorchester.
As it was Feb with poor weather we only walked from the decent sized car park through the garden to reception, but it was obvious that given some warmth and sunshine it would be a delight to sit out.
The staff are friendly and accommodating.
The atmosphere is warm friendly and welcoming. The Lounge and dining room are very comfortable with low beams, seductive armchairs and settees. The bedroom was equally attractive with good storage and comfortable mattress. No problem with hot water.
The food is very very good. The breakfast menu is superb. All the usual combinations of the British breakfast plus salmon and scrambled eggs, smoked haddock and kidneys. Home made marmalade (W.I. ?)
The evening menu is equally good, a good choice, well cooked and beautifully presented.
The wine list is not huge but there are 4 or 5 red and white wines under £20 for those on a budget plus more expensive, including champagne. There is no bar, but drinks are served in the lounge as well as at the table. The kitchen team are certainly at the top of their skills and are to be congratulated.
Two small quibbles. The bathroom lighting in Bedroom 3 is very subdued, I would have preferred something brighter for a wet shave, and the heating is by night storage heaters. We found it too warm, but an open window sorted that.
There is no way Yalbury Cottage can be rated at anything less than excellent.

Room Tip: We were in bedroom 3, groundfloor. Nice view from the window and easy exit without going through rec...

My wife and I just got back from a memorable weekend, staying at a Yalbury Cottage. James, welcomed us and looked after us faultlessly and nothing was too much bother. The room was lovely and breakfast was incredible. We were so fortunate that we were able to have Sunday lunch because of a lower number in another party. Ariane, was delightful and her husband is an incredibly gifted chef. We can't recommend this place high enough. We will definitely go back. What a treat! Thank you to all at Yalbury Cottage.
