“Absolutely our favourite place to eat and stay in Dorset”
Reviewed 21 October 2010

Conveniently located in a quiet village, near Dorchester and other lovely county towns. It's also great for the Jurassic Coast and the myriad of fantastic Dorset Walks. We always get a great welcome, and the place has a lovely relaxed cosy environment... and Jamie's cooking is wonderful.

I'm not a B&B person, preferring instead staying in larger hotels however my stay at Yalbury Cottage may have just won me over.

The rooms themselves are spacious and comfortable. Perfect for relaxing after a long day in the countryside (or travelling in the car to the cottage itself which lets face it, isnt exactly in the middle of London - which I suspect is one of its attractions).

What would see me return however was the food. We book in for one nights stay with an evening meal included and the meal was fab. Genuinely, for presentation, service and taste it was one of the best meals we had on the trip (particularly the starters). We will be back.

(TIP: You might be tempted to order the cheese on toast between the main course and the dessert. Unless you are really hungry the cheese board is a wiser choice).

The welcome we received was very warm and we were offered tea on the terrace. We had the Saturday night meal and the restaurant was busy but the other tables were not intrusive and the service was excellent. The dinner was delicious as was breakfast. We asked advice on where to walk and Arianne plotted a good route for us. It is a beautiful village with hidden treasures. It was so relaxing, we would definitely go again.

I have only been here for dinner, but the food was outstanding and we were made to feel very welcome by the staff. Highly recommended.

After browsing the website and reading the rave reviews, Yalbury Cottage didn't quite live up to expectations. Yes, the dining area is lovely, the room looked out over a pleasant field, and was comfortable and quiet, and yes, Ariane is an extremely attentive hostess, but the hotel lacked the wow factor we'd been led to expect, and felt more like someone's home with rooms than a classy country hotel. There were broken seats in the garden, which seemed to be for children rather than guests, for example and the breakfasts, whilst copious, were a bit pretentious for our taste. Comfortable, yes, but I'd expect more gloss as it's on the pricey side for room and breakfast.

Had a total of nine nights here. This family run hotel is a real find - well worth the money. Lovely setting, very quiet, yet very near Dorchester and in Thomas Hardy country. The only problem was that as we were supposed to be working it really put us into a holiday frame of mind, not ideal when you are supposed to be doing business type things. Staff all great - they couldn't do enough for us. One of the best hotels I have ever stayed in.

Stopped here for a one night stay on our way back from Cornwall. Our room was comfortable although perhaps a little dark. The bathroom roomy but the shower an absolute disaster . No pressure whatsoever! However, the food was another matter. Welcomed into the lounge by Ariane we were offered canapes and then a beautiful meal cooked by owner/chef Jamie. This was of a very high standard indeed and delicious. Breakfast was a similar affair with a great choice of almost anything you could think of. I would have need at least a week to try everything available! A lovely stay.
