“Great Museum”

Fantastic collections and is great for children. Interesting displays include Thomas Hardy and the Jurassic Coast, as well as fabulous prehistoric collections. Run as a charity, with not much funding, so displays not as up-to-date as government backed museums with lots of money ...

“well worth a visit”
Reviewed 30 October 2010

Considering the size of Dorchester this museum is a really good attraction.
It isn't free, i think for an adult the cost is around £6 or so, and this entitles you to visit for 12 months, personally i think it is good value even for one visit.
Both i and my daughter, now aged 6, loved this place, there are fossils and dinosaurs, great local history, and for me it is almost a holy grail of the life of Hardy, so if you in any way are a fan of Dorset's famed writer then it is a no brainer.Even if you are not a Hardy fan it is really well worth a visit, especially when compared with such dross as the other so called "museums" nearby!

“Well worth a visit”

This is a real gem amongst some pretty ropey competition in Dorchester. Although a little tired in places it has a wide selection of old and new and has a neat Jurassic section as a recent addition. Though I was not travelling with children the museum works hard to make things interesting for them.
