“charming and worth a visit”
Reviewed 10 July 2014

While a bit hard to find, rewards await those who make their way to this cottage doorway. The staff are exceptional in their friendly and knowledgable interpretation of the site. The know the history and literature and they do an excellent job of welcoming and informing the visitors.

“Undergoing renovations”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

Thomas Hardy's birthplace is truly lovely. Unfortunately it is going through a lot of renovation ( as of mid June). The roof is being re-thatched which is a good thing, very interesting. But there is lots of work going on at what is now a visitor center, parking spaces being created, cementing being done, all pretty disruptive and much different from the rustic and charming area we visited in 1994. At that time I would have given it a 5 star rating because I love Thomas Hardy. The woods around are lovely and our long walk from Yalbury cottage was interesting, but the site itself was disappointing.

is a good thing and very interesting

“A charming location”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

A fascinating olde worlde cottage in a country setting. I recommend you approach it from the 1/2 mile walk through the woods from the car park. You will be rewarded by the site of the charming cottage from a distance as you come out of the woods. You don't need to be a Hardy fan to enjoy this attraction, although there is plenty there to enlighten you about his early life.

The National Trust are in the process of building a visitor centre at a respectable distance from the cottage. Probably a good idea as there are few facilities at the cottage.

Really worth a visit. Lots of artefacts from area rich in history. Also have exhibitions that are worth checking out and some kids holidays activities.
