My husband and myself were visiting Dorchester as a one off trip. We noticed lots of tea rooms around the town that looked very charming. We had been browsing in a local shop and opposite was this cafe, thought we would give it a try. When we walked in the cafe, there wasn't a menu to be seen so my husband looked at what was shown in the plastic cases on the counter, when they has us our orders they weren't very helpful. Then they told us to take a seat upstairs, there was very limited space which was a little bit too intimate with other people; we had another couple sit on the table beside us who we had to move our table to let them in, it was like they were sitting on our laps!!! Our coffee took a long time to arrive and when it did it was wrong, again we had to wait a good ten minutes and it was quite bitter taste. We also then spotted a menu!!! They did a variety of items my husband would much preferred! When we left my hair smelt of baking which wasn't a nice lasting memory. This cafe has potential, think they need feedback like this to help get it right!!

To start with the Coffee is excellent and the sausage rolls are the best in the west country (not my quote but the gossip in Dorchester). If you love food and always looking for something new to try The Loft provide international ingredients to a trendy menu. In fact there isnt exactly a menu because all the food is made freshly in front of you with regularly changing flavours. So the food is all about pick and mix, so think Spanish Tapas verses Greek Mese with an oriental twist. There is security for those who are less adventurous with soups, baked potatoes and ciabatas. The food is made with enthusiasm by the staff adding their own personal touches from huge comforting cheese scones to totally everything-free (gluton, dairy, fat) seeded slices. It is ideal for a take-away healthy salad lunch, cosy breakfasts on brown bread, tea and cake or my favourite, lunch with the girls and a bottle of Prosecco to share. And that lunch can be at anytime within their opening hours. How flexible!!!

We discovered The Loft Café whilst wandering thro the Antelope Walk. The entrance is a little small and we were asked to order before looking for a table upstairs. We waited whilst another customer differed over what to have and though there were four staff behind the counter we still had to wait. It was if they had designated roles. One to take the orders, one to make the drinks, one to serve the tables and one to kill the wasps that seemed to be flying everywhere. We decided to have a shared platter, which was bits and bobs of what was on the menu. Pies and lots of very tasty salads plus some homemade artisan bread with a olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing to dip into.
Delicious. Whilst the Loft wasn't busy, it was after lunch, the staff still managed to bring up drinks twice that no one required. Overall we thought the food was good enough, that we would return.

I am glad that you found the food 'good enough', and overall enjoyed your visit to The Loft. Yes, it is not ideal having to wait whilst someone else orders, but we have tried various ways, and it does seem the best. Because the food we made changes all the time, we need to talk people through it, and to give them an opportunity to choose. Often people will go to the table to decide, and then come back down, but I do not feel that we can push someone aside whilst they are in the middle of ordering - no matter how long they take. We try to give people a menu and encourage them to look in the counter whilst they wait. However, on that day we were inundated with wasps which were causing considerable concern to customers, and so I was endeavouring to deal with them rather than assisting with orders as we were not busy. Just to clarify, two members of staff take orders whilst also making drinks and waiting on customers, another cooks, and another washes up. That way we can prepare fresh food every day and keep on top of washing up, in what is an incredibly small space. As to the extra coffees - we are a very happy band and one of us was suffering severe festival-lag - it took her several days to rejoin the real world. She probably needed those coffees herself.......

Staff helpfully checked that there was seating before we ordered. Delicious lunch of marinaded salmon and two salads, all packed with flavour. A real find whilst en route to West Country.
