Ranked #7 of 45 things to do in Dorchester
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 11 October 2013

if your into Thomas Hardy then it is a must to visit and see where he lived and did his writing, the staff are very helpful and will answer any questions you have, you can have a drink for a donation, watch one of his films, try on costumes from the films, walk round the garden, see the graves of his pets.

Loads of Hardy memorabilia and atmosphere. Sadly, very little of Hardy's furniture but NT are restoring it to what it might have been in terms of décor.. Most poignant is the Pets' Graveyard.

Fascinating house where Hardy lived in his later years. Couldn't help but wonder about his wife living in the little rooms in the attic as well.

The really nice thing about Max Gate is that you can touch everything and sit on all the seats - unlike many NT house... This is because all but a couple of pieces are not original, as Thomas Hardy insisted on a house sale after his death. The house has been dressed with period things as Hardy would have had it, so the effect is there if not original. We had a wonderful time.

We are NT members and being in the area made our visit.
We are glad we did.
If you are remotely interested in Thomas Hardy you will be fascinated in this property.
You can read every book which is to hand, handle the contents, make your own tea and coffee and even sit on chairs for comfort!
We stayed here longer than we did at Kingston Lacey.
