“Worth a Visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 August 2014

This is full of interest for Hardy fans, but there could have been more rooms open. Still worth a visit though.

“Where Hardy wrote his most famous novels”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2014

The house is a decent size for the price, bigger than it looks from the outside. None of the furniture is original, but this isn't as big a deal as it would usually be, because Hardy was an architect and designed the house himself so there's still a lot of him in it. You get a good impression of what it would have been like when Hardy and Emma were arguing and making up or when they had people like TE Lawrence and Siegfried Sassoon to dinner.

Note: The only parking is on-street. We did get a space even in August but only because someone happened to be leaving at the same time. However, the street leads straight into the garden so parking on a nearby street would also be fine.

“Very welcoming property”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2014

This property is situated on the outskirts of the County town of Dorset & provides free easy parking in a quiet road close by.
We were given a friendly welcome on our arrival & enjoyed an hour looking in detail around the property which had been furnished in recent years to tie in with the period that Hardy lived there.
There is a tremendous amount of background information to browse through, particularly in the downstairs rooms and one cannot fail to learn a lot about Hardy & his family on one shortish visit.
One is able to touch exhibits, without the presence of room stewards hovering in every room, which helps to make the visit most enjoyable.
The neglected garden proved the one disappointment, with weeds abounding & a total lack of watering around the shrivelled up areas of the vegetable garden. Perhaps the gardener was on his annual holiday.
Generally a very memorable visit & highly recommended.

“Dorset Heroes”

Just a few miles away from Hardy's birth place and grave this house is as he left in when he died. Lots of information scattered around on Hardy, Dorset and Dorchester. Well worth doing all three. Great staff
