“What a delight!”

Such a charming and quirky building. Staff were lovely and the food was very good. Proper tea in a teapot - and plenty for 2 cups each.

“Just charming”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 May 2014

After a long journey we were in need of refreshment and by chance came across the Old Tea House, where Thomas Hardy apparently used to take tea . We were welcomed and served very quickly. The cream tea was both delicious and tastefully presented, with real china crockery and generous portions of jam and cream. Jolly good scones too. All in all a soothing, civilising experience.

The Old Tea House is a charming reminder of how such places used to be, with comfortable furniture in an interesting setting, and no piped music. Very good value and well worth a visit if you are within a reasonable distance of Dorchester or Weymouth.

“Best Tea in Dorchester; easy to see why”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 May 2014 via mobile

Come with me if you will, and Google the best tea room in Dorchester. You will find that The Old Tea House is Number 1 on that list, with very good reason and it is easy to see why.
We had phoned up ages ago to make a reservation for late in the day and were told not to worry, they'd still be open. As it turned out, we got there slightly earlier than planned and ended up staying pleasantly longer than expected! The place was still taking in customers when we left at nearly 6pm when the place officially closes at 5 on a Saturday.
This is the oldest free standing house in Dorchester. It is a great building with bags of character and history. In fact the whole street is full of old buildings and charm.
The tea itself was superb. Plenty of sandwiches with a top up whenever you felt like it, you don't always get extra sarnies, so that's good. There was plenty of tea with several refills. The tea was leaf tea which is much better than tea bags in my humble opinion, and yes I do use leaf tea at home. The Earl Grey was fragrant and fresh. There was also scones with a large dollop of clotted cream and great jam, according to my wife. There was also lemon syrup cake and a chocolate cake for spoiling yourself with. There were three of us for tea, with one glass of fizz. It was £16 a head.
This is great value for great food. We met some lovely people in the tea room during the course of our meal and so the company was great too.
The owners are a hoot.
Go and enjoy the best afternoon tea in Dorchester for yourselves. Be prepared for a lovely lazy long afternoon...

“WOW!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 May 2014

This charming tearoom has a superb waitress named Debbie who is delightfully friendly and stayed open last Saturday because diners kept coming in as the sun was shining! We were so lucky it was still open.
The teas were served in beautiful china teapot, cups and saucers and the lemon drizzle cake was the nicest I have ever tasted. Our diabetic friend was given a fresh strawberry with his scone and clotted cream as he couldn't have the jam.
We can't wait to go there again and will soon find an excuse.
Thank you Debbie

This has to be one of the nicest cream teas ever. Lovely hot scones and plenty of cream and jam as well as strawberries. Good friendly service too.
