Review of Maumbury Rings

This outdoor roman amphitheatre can take you back to barbaric activities of the time. The Dorchester Council now hold festivals and events, always free, and attracting so may local folk. Music, fireworks etc etc. AND in the winter when snow falls out come all the sledges with both children and adults alike racing down the steep slopes into the central bowl. So much happiness seen here over the seasons.

Easy to find, just by pay and display Mid Fairfield carpark. Free to enter and there is a noticeboard explaining the history. Well worth a visit to see where ancient people walked. This ampitheatre can be meandered around and walked on. It is covered with grassy slopes so the real feel of an ampitheatre is somewhat lost compared to other locations, but a little imagination can go a long way.

It's easy enough to drive by without stopping, but if you are afoot, take the time to meander around. Not as impressive as Maiden Castle, but I enjoyed the walk around the top and it was a pleasant way to spend a half hour. The gate was a bit of a mystery to me until a kind passerby saw my predicament and showed me how to open it, then I wondered why I hadn't figured it out on my own!

You can visit this site of ancient history for no cost and walk on, in and around it all you want. The only disappointment was the damaged information board, it's mostly illegible due to lots of scratching. This is a must if you are in the area, nothing beats the feeling of walking where our ancient ancestors once walked.
