We have just returned from a short break in Henchard. What a fab place, there were 11 of us in total including 7 kids ranging from 7 to 15 years old, we also took 2 dogs.
The cottage is huge and boasts 5 star comfort, the main lounge area has an exposed oak beam roof which looks beautiful. Bedrooms and beds are very comfortable, beatifull fire, everything you need in the kitchen. Swimming pool is perfect as is the well stocked games room. Everything is so well thought out. Location is great if you love walks, our dogs (and kids) loved the woods which are just on the door step.
This is by far the best cottage we have ever stayed at and we will be booking again.

Room Tip: Choose Henchard even if you don't use all the bedrooms, you won't be disappointed

Just returned from a short break in Abbotsea a one bed property. Everything is as described, clean and well presented. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Lots of good touches including local information, fresh eggs and vegetables.
However, we felt fortunate to be staying at a time when there were very few children on site. Also thought that it might be an idea to have some designated child free pool time.
All in all a lovely stay in a delightful location.

We stayed a whole week in a two bed cottage. We enjoyed the stay. Although there wasn't that many staying at the complex we did enjoy the environmental policy and philosophy of the place. (The growing space was wonderful and cheap chicken eggs were delightful.) The cottage we stayed in needed some refurbishment and some of the decor needed to be updated (and the chair in the lounge needed to go in the skip, where it was found....) but otherwise the cottage was fairly comfortable (but small). The bathroom had a loud fan (not ideal next to the room with the children) and there was also a problem with the water pressure (which the managers knew about and you had to ask to find out about so that you could discover that there was a reset button... not a good way to run a business.) Also, the carpet in the cottage was clearly hard wearing (also on your feet! so take your slippers.) We also found the bed to be rather soft and consequently rather uncomfortable. We also found the some of the management instructions rather harsh - 'if you leave things behind then we won't return them.' That they wouldn't entertain complaints if they were not mentioned before hand.... not very friendly messages.

We liked the complex (with pool and private growing area.) The childrens outside area was honestly overgrown and rather poor in terms of provision. The indoor provision felt like a scout hut but had some nice features (but had a funny smell.) There was also conflicting information provided. We were advised before we arrived that WIFI would cost £10 for a week but was £12 by the time we arrived (we booked in 2011 so rather disappointing that they got this wrong.)

Overall, the deal wasn't worth the price we paid (we were told by returning visitors that the price had gone up considerably this year) and we certainly didn't feel like we got value for money (or had any desire to return.)

Room Tip: late bookings were very popular

Many thanks for your review of your stay at Greenwood Grange, feedback from guests is very important to us and we will take onboard your comments. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the stay overall but wanted to respond to some of your concerns..

The cottages are subject to an ongoing refurbishment and redecoration scheme and it is shame that our interior furnishings were not to your taste including the carpets which are made of natural fibres (wool and sisal mix) introduced as part of our environmental policy. The size of the cottage you stayed in has not been an issue for a family of 4 before, we have cottages of varying sizes and so perhaps one of the larger 2 bedroom properties would have suited your needs better.

We have updated the information folders in the cottages to include instructions on how to reset the shower boost pumps which was previously omitted – however, the staff onsite are always more than happy to assist if required. We always prefer to hear any concerns from guests at the time of their stay so that they can be rectified immediately rather than being informed after the end of the holiday when we are unable to appease the situation – we will review the phrasing in the terms and conditions following your feedback.

The outside play area is situated within the nature field which plays a large part in our environmental policy and key to our Green Business Award to encourage wild flowers and a wider range of local wildlife to the site. We cut paths throughout the field for guests to use and these include our wildlife signs and quizzes.

The Wi fi on site is outsourced and we will pass your feedback onto to the director.

We are sorry to hear that the complex was not as you hoped and you will not return, we always endeavour to provide high quality, value for money accommodation and facilities to our guests but it would seem that on this occasion we have not lived up to your expectations.

This was my 3rd visit to Greenwood Grange.Previously i have stayed in one of the 2 bedroomed cottages, a one bedroomed apartment, and this time in the Abbotsea one bedroomed apartment. All cottages/apartments were of the same standard and varied only in the amount of space or size of property.
I shalln't go into detail of what to expect as others have posted more or less accurate depictions already so i have little to add to those reviews.
As i have been here on 3 occasions now it is obvious that i like Greenwood Grange, and the primary reason for that is it's location, situated about 300 yards or more from Thomas Hardy's cottage at Bockhampton, and right by Thorncombe Woods, a Dorset CC protected nature site which is presently being turned over to the heathland that Hardy made famous as "Egdon Heath" in many of his novels.
The nice little county town of Dorchester is just over a mile or so away and the delights of Lulworth, Durdle door and the other attractions that this part of Dorset has to offer are all within easy reach.
Depending on where you live the downside to Greenwood is that there are no pubs within walking distance, the excellent Yalbury Cottage is an easy 20 minute walk but it is a restaurant-an excellent one at that-but not a place you can have just a drink, so if you do want to go out for a pint or two you will need a driver.
One thing to note, it gets very, and i mean VERY busy in school holiday time with young children, on this latest occasion i think every one of the properties bar one was families so if you don't like hearing children, or having them around then it is probably best avoided during these times.
As i said, my 3rd visit in a year but i will certainly be back but then again i love Hardy and South Dorset ,and Greenwood provides the comfort and the location that i want.
It isn't cheap but that is not necessarily a bad thing.

Just got back from a 4 night weekend break in the Durbaville cottage, on arrival we thought it all looked lovely but on closer inspection we could see the cleaning standards are very poor, we found cobwebs every where, dust all over the skirting boards and behind furniture and the beds also mould on the window frames which could be wiped off very easy!!! not being picky but for the money we paid for the break we expected better!!. We were also promised tea coffee sugar milk and biscuits/cake enough for a few days we were left 1 pint of semi skimmed milk a few sachet's of coffee and sugar and a cake no tea bags, hardly enough for a party of 8!! No one around untill Saturday to sort out the problem but were given some tea bags and hand wash when asked, staff when in situ are very helpful and friendly everything else is fine apart from the games room which has seen better days equipment!! also very dark walking back to our cottage at night from games room as no paths lit up. Overall rating very nice, lovely location but think its very over priced for what there is on site.

We stayed in one of the terraced cottages arranged around a coutyard with pond and with a shared rear garden. The location is a lovely quiet spot, right near Hardy's cottage and woodland yet just off the main A35 road giving good access to the coast, Dorchester etc (Although watch out for long traffic queues in summer and due to road works associated with the Olympics near Weymouth). The cottage was of a high standard, with most that you would want - a sort of mix of modern and old style. No dishwasher, which was a surprise, although Ecover wash up products are provided and they may argue this is one of their 'Green' measures. The big plus from our point of view was the facilities, indoor pool, tennis courts, badminton, ganes room - this kept our young teenagers entertained in the evenings, although some of the raquets were looking a bit worse for wear. The communal element of the gardens does mean you have to be happy to have limited outdoor privacy especially as the place seems popular with families of all ages - this was no problem at all for us. It is also very nice to be able to help yoursef to their fruit and veg patch and eggs all on site. As we had no problems we hardly saw any staff throughout our stay, which was fine. All in all a great place for a relaxed family holiday with good acccess to the fantastic coast and countryside here.

We couldn't recommend this complex enough. The staff were very professional and approachable on arrival and our cottage was very clean. The decor was a mix of retro and modern and had a really individual touch. The facilities were great, especially the indoor pool, which we managed to have all to ourselves each time we used it.
The ethos of the complex is great, with an emphasis on trusting visitors to have 24 hour access to facilities such as the great games room and laundry room with their own keys.
We were very lucky with the weather and were able to relax in the beautifully landscaped grounds. We also visited loads of local beaches such as ringstead Bay , Weymouth and West bay which were beautiful.
Overall, great accommodation, great facilities in an idyllic spot.
