What a delight we experienced today. We were looking for a decent pub to have lunch in (our 16th wedding anniversary!) and for Australian pub lover me, my ideal English pub is one with lots of character that is relaxed, unpretentious, clean and well run with freshly prepared grub. Well, we hit the jackpot today.
We visited this pub a year ago and have not returned since today as it was a rather filthy, badly run pub with an undesirable atmosphere and food not too good. Well, what a turn around!
The new landlord/landlady have transformed this rather lovely looking pub into what it should always be....a friendly, very clean and well run place with great freshly prepared food and with breathtaking beer garden views up towards Melbury Hill.
The lady's loo is totally new....lovely and clean and bright, just wonderful. There were fresh flowers in lovely vases around the place and the feeling was just so fresh and clean.
I had Ashton Press Cider and Steve chose a real Cider, the Thatchers rough stuff that grows hairs on your chest and gives one rosy cheeks! But it was pretty decent drop I thought!! The lunch menu was very good with a great selection of starters and mouth watering mains. Steve chose the Cod in Cider batter with crushed peas. For cheese and Ploughman's lover me, I couldn't go past the local Ploughman's. It was wonderful served on a board with a decent wedge of cheddar, Dorset Blue Vinny (I am certain) and a lovely generous slice of west country leg ham. It was accompanied with pickled onions, gherkins, a gorgeous carrot and onion slaw, wonderful relish/chutney, fresh salad leaves with two decent slices of top quality whole wheat bread (cut into 4) with butter. The best ploughman's I have ever had. Reasonably priced, both large meals under 20 pounds.
They have worked very hard to get this place back in shape, new loos, fresh paintwork, and love the wallpaper near the side bar where we were sitting!....... so impressed with the transformation and the good quality fresh food. We will be returning......probably tomorrow! as The Gold Hill Fair is on this weekend and we will certainly stop off for a cider or two and sample some of the BBQ on offer, listening to some live jazz....can't wait! Thanks Andy and Sally. Unreal!
