Description: 23rd April 2011 As chain pubs go it was very good and not to be confused with the fantastic Half Moon Inn at Horsington a few miles away. The food was freshly cooked with a noticeable lack of frozen veg. Service was good, tables clean and prices fair. Menu although ‘corporate’ had a few interesting ideas and he specials were appealing. Parking is a little unusual; a pay and display car park then pub customers get a refund proportionate to spend, so if eating likely a full refund as we did, but you need change before going there. Dinner for 2 with drinks £27.40.

A Marston's pub that offers brilliant pub food and affordable accomodation. Probably the centre of Sherborne life. If you are attending a wedding at Sherborne Abbey, this MUST be your first port of call! You can't go wrong!

“Gluten Free......'I don't think so'!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 March 2012

After booking a family holiday to Sherborne - as usual decided to source out potential places that were suitable for coeliacs as my wife needs a fully gluten free diet.
After a little Googling a few names started to appear through the searching, and roll up the Half Moon in Sherborne. Very glossy website and dowloadable pdf version of the menu.
Stunning menu for a pub, good choices and the ultimate deal clincher for any coeliac.....emblazened all over the menu 'all sandwiches can be made on Genius bread'. So on day 1 of our visit, popped in for a quick drink and a look. Seemed nice, spacious, large restaurant area or eat at table in the lounge.
Day 2 took the punt at lunchtime for a snack, only to be told they were out of Genius bread, so we had alternatives and my wife had to yet again settle for the jacket spud. Day 3 had been a busy day and we decided on a late lunch. Unfortunately either we were in Groundhog Day or the pub had some serious regulars that never moved from their pitch! Prior to ordering any food once again asked if they had any Genius bread in. We were then rather sharply told that they don't stock it anymore. No demand for it so they stopped bothering. We informed them that half the reason we had gone there was because the internet and their menus clearly indicate they cater, but was met with shrugged shoulders as if to say 'tough'.
Due to this attitude we left without ordering or drinking, mainly due to the fact if this was the attitude towards coeliacs, it had to throw the rest of the menu into question and how items were prepared and handled.
Unfortunately this happens to be one of the better pubs in Sherborne with others run down and closing due to lost licences....ho hum, but if you want to meet the locals and a bowl of chips - fill your boots up!

“It does what it says on the tin!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2012

We go to this pub probably once a week for a drink and quite often to eat.
The menu is quite extensive but could not ever be considered Haute Cuisine.
We went last week with our daughters to celebrate the end of a lovely half term. Children eat free in the early evenings midweek if ordering at the same time as an adult meal. We had a really very good meal and my steak was absolutely superb. The girls had puddings and we had two bottles of their excellent value Australian Chardonnay as it was a celebration and the taxi was booked!! £47.50 all in which we thought was really excellent value. Very friendly staff and highly recommended for anyone looking for really good value in Serborne

“Convenient, broad menu, but poor service & attitude”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 February 2012

We were looking for an easy, reasonably-quick meal, on a Sunday lunchtime, but didn’t want a roast dinner. The Half Moon is right in the middle of Sherborne, opposite The Abbey, and serves its normal full menu every day. The prices are quite low - £8-odd for a hamburger – and the food was acceptable for the price, but wasn’t very warm.

We choose to eat in the bar, which was reasonably lively, but not crowded, with a number of small children who were all reasonably well-behaved. There were two staff visible, covering both the bar and the restaurant, which should have been adequate for the amount of business but there were times when both disappeared and left the bar unattended for upwards of 5 minutes at a time (I waited to buy a drink during one of those absences).
When present, the barmaid was surly and seemed annoyed at being disturbed whilst talking to her friends (who were clogging up the till area on the customer side of the bar).

Would we go there again? Quite possibly - it’s quick, cheap and handy – but it’s just a shame that it can’t have a friendly atmosphere, too.

“Extensive menu, reasonable prices, central location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 September 2011

I have been to the Half Moon several times for either lunch or dinner and have never been disappointed. The menu is incredibly extensive and caters to most palates, including those who may be vegetarian. The service is reasonably rapid and the staff very friendly. The restaurant is located in the back part of the inn, and is centrally situated in this lovely town, immediately across the road from the beautiful Norman abbey. The only minor inconvenience to eating at the Half Moon is that parking has to be paid for in advance and is then reimbursed at the end of the meal. If you are a family and there are very varied palates in your group I would definitely recommend the Half Moon as its huge menu is bound to cater to everyone!
