I don't think I've ever written a bad review, because I research places carefully and always get it pretty right. But this place was a huge disappointment. For 80 pounds it was a rip-off, frankly - it hurts me to say this, because Malcolm and his wife seemed sincere and pleasant, and I don't like to not be nice....but this is the worst place I've stayed since I was in my 20s and unable to afford better. From the dirty, manky, unvacuumed carpet to the thin towels to the foam mattress (not inner-spring), it just has a depressing air of decrepitude and unloved-ness. I spent the first half-hour after I arrived wondering if I was going to be able to take it - it was that bad. And I looked up the TripAdvisor reviews and wondered how I had been so deceived - I just can't believe that people would say 'good value', because I've been staying in B&Bs all over the south-west of England in the past week and I've never paid more than 65 pounds for really lovely, homely, cared-for places. I was expecting something pretty good for 80+ pounds a night! This is not actually a B&B, it's a 'cheap hotel' in style - the thin towels, foam mattress, unloved carpet, cheap gimcrack furniture (wobbly cheap cane tables) all reminded me of that style. It seriously makes me doubt the veracity of some of the TripAdvisor reviews. I was also kept awake by the owner's son till after 11pm (he seems to sleep in whichever room isn't being used) who was on a loud Skype call or something till I banged on the wall to give him the hint that other people were trying to sleep. I could go on, but won't. I love old and characterful B&Bs (and have lived in Victorian-era houses in Australia for much of my life) - this isn't one of them.
