“A friendly family orientated campsite.”
Reviewed 19 July 2012

Myself, my husband and two children enjoyed a wonderful weekend camping at Herston back in May when the weather was glorious, we had such a great time and booked up for another weekend in July. We could not predict the British weather and unfortunately the evening we arrived the heavens opened! The rain did not stop all weekend but the staff made our time at Herston memorable, fun and welcoming, breakfast in the club house was delicious, the fire was lit for all of the campers to warm themselves and entertainment was put on for the children including films, games and a disco. There was a real old fashioned community feel and my children are impatiently waiting for our next weekend in Swanage. The facilities were all clean, food and drink reasonably priced and we can't wait to go back!

I have recently stayed at this site, but I really dont know what everyone is moaning about, as an avid camper, I venture out at all times of the year and have stayed in some pretty awful places. Most die hard campers know from experience that toilet blocks and showers do get muddy or are sometimes over crowded, but at the end of the day you make the most of it. I found the facilities at Herston to be of a more than acceptable standard, the reception staff were extremely helpful, the bar had a nice lively atmosphere and the food was keenly priced and well cooked, I especially enjoyed the late night takaway.
I will certainly not hesitate to stay again.

Don't believe the website! We had a terrible stay here, the 'luxury showers' they advertise are dark dingy and every single cubicle had mould on the walls. The area for camping isn't that close to the facilities, there is a toilet block nearer but it's very dated although fairly clean. Entire camping field had turned into a boggy mess, so much so that we had frogs in the tent! Though we've had bad weather so that might not be the norm. The conservatory in the bar leaked when it rained, the food was cheap but basic, there were maintenance men fixing something near our tent who were driving round the site much faster that the 5mph speed signs, so much so that we were frightened to let our kids ride their bikes in case they were knocked off, and they language they were using was pretty terrible (The word [--] 5 times in one sentence) all within earshot of 5 and 6 year olds. The yurts look run down and so did the caravans. All in all we found it an un- friendly site with limited facilities. We spoke to other campers and every one said they were disappointed, several were booking into b&bs. We came home after 2 days.

The facilities are tatty. Toilets and sinks were dirty. I've been in nicer public toilets. Mould on the shower walls. There was soap and hot water but nothing to dry your hands on. The women's toilets in the tent field had urinals in them?!?

A guy steamed up to me in a car and had a go at me for where I'd pitched up - despite the reception saying I could pitch there. Luckily another guy came along and said it was ok, otherwise I would have left there and then.

I paid £30 for two nights and left after one. I've stayed in much nicer places for less money.

Thanks for your review. You state that the toilets and sinks were dirty and the shower walls had mould on them, our showers are cleaned on a regular basis four times a day. The showers are not dirty and they are not covered with mould. You then go on to say that there was soap and hot water but nothing to dry your hands and that the women’s toilets in our camp field had urinals in them, our women’s toilets do not have urinals we have two large blocks of toilets and showers that are in constant use. We are in the process of improving our facilities for the campers and have recently started to install two new mobile family shower and toilet units, which have not yet been commissioned or cleaned as yet; perhaps you mistook one of these for our regular toilet facilities.
All our staff have identification and under no circumstances would any member of our team steam up to you with an aggressive attitude and if there was a problem with where you had pitched we would endeavour to sort out the problem with the minimum of disruption and inconvenience to yourself.

We spent two nights in our touring caravan. Our alloted pitch had a huge drain/manhole cover in the middle of it so there was no scope to manouver. In our opinion the pitch was too small, had we or our neighbour put up an awning, this would have been a fire hazzard as it would have been much too close. we are Caravn Club members and are used to a much higher standard of pitch. To add insult to injury a Volkswagon camper van arrived next to us and proceeded to erect a tent joined to the camper van by two rows of tatty looking plastic fence, again had we or anyone else subsequently using our pitch wished to put an awning up it would have been far too close. The whole site seems to have too many tatty looking seasonal vans tht have obviously not been taken care of. The only decent things were the toilet & shower block which did look clean, and the fact that the site is in walking distance from lovely Swanage.

Thank you most kindly for your review, whilst we accept constructive comments and would normally act on it to improve our site and facilities, we feel that your grievance is wholly unjustified. Many sites have manhole access points as a necessary evil of drainage and sewer systems, the manhole referred to is of the required strength and conforms to local building regulations and is capable of being driven over, parked on and otherwise misused. As to the distance between pitches again our pitches conform to the regulation width as laid down in the fire regulations governing touring caravans; it appears that your only real grievance is the fact that a less than perfect camper van had rented the pitch next to yours.
With reference to your comments about our clients who rent seasonal pitches, as detailed recently on the BBC, June was the wettest month on record so we have been unable to carry out many outdoor gardening jobs. We allow our clients to leave erected awnings etc, allowing them to store outdoor furniture, B B Q’s and other assorted items, obviously in the adverse weather conditions we have experienced this year, algae and moss accumulate which would require an extended dry period to kill off.
It is nice to know that you did in fact find our toilet and shower block clean and acceptable for which we thank you.

We hired Rose Cottage for 3 nights over our wedding. We absolutely loved it there and couldn't fault a thing. Loved the fact the hot tub was private to us (even though heavily pregnant I couldn't get in - but my husband had fun!). The staff were so nice when checking in and out. Lovely clean spacious cottage and would recommend to anyone!

Four of us stayed for 2 nights. The Yurt had good futon beds and was warm and dry, the weather was wet and windy. The washroom facilities were excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful. The site around the yurts was well drained with gravel walkways to reception, bar and other facilities, so after months of rain you could still walk around the site in sandals. Good value.
