How lovely it was to travel by steam train from Swanage to Corfe on 28 December. The station at Swanage was decorated for Christmas and the little station at Harmans Cross was delightful but the icing on the cake was the coal fire and Christmas tree that was in the station waiting room at Corfe. Could have stayed there all day pretending I lived in the past.

Take your family to the Steam Trains!!! This is a relaxing day, you won't have to run for the train, and the staff are all enthusiasts which makes it extra special. Café at Swanage station is brilliant too...easier now they've moved it away from the busiest part of the platform.

We had walked from Corfe Castle along the Nine Barrow Down to Swanage and decided it would be fun to return by train. As it was December the station staff were all dressed as elves or had tinsel/holly on their hats. When we settled ourselves in one of the carriages, we were able to reminisce about the days of steam. However, as we sank into the seats, we were reminded that the upholstery in modern trains is far more comfortable. The staff had even decorated the carriages with Christmas decorations!

For the fifth year running we went on the Santa Special put on by Swanage Railway. This is great value for money and good, old-fashioned Christmas entertainment. All the staff at the station and en route join in with costumes and waving and generally getting into the Christmas spirit. The mince pies are the best ever and the sherry goes down a treat. (The chidren get juice and a biscuit). Santa takes the time to speak to every child and they all get a nice gift. His 'elves' are always a treat to see. The singalong is good fun and everyone leaves having had a lovely time. We will be going again next year.

All morning as we walked form Nine Barrow Down into Corfe we had seen the steam engines in the valley. For this our third walking group weekend in this area we repeated the earlier experience after a lunch in Corfe of taking the steam railway back to Herston Halt.
It was truly a step back in time : from all the memorabilia at the stations themselves, and then enter the carriages. Magic!
