We recently spent one night in the Louisa Lodge section of the Purbeck House hotel in Swanage. Our night was spent in a room with a balcony and sea view, this was a lovely room which had everything we needed with the addition of the outside area. Unfortunately there was no furniture on the balcony to sit and just watch the surroundings but we could have always used the two chairs from inside our room if we needed to. We had a couple of drinks upon our return to the hotel and were served by Damian who was tending the bar for the night and we again were served by him at breakfast time and again we would very impressed with his manner and professionalism. The breakfast was very good indeed, we helped ourselves to buffet cold items and then had a full english breakfast which was in my opinion one of the best we have ever had. It was all cooked to perfection and arrived piping hot to our table. We would definately use this hotel again if we ever need to visit Swanage again.

Room Tip: Choose a superior room or one with the balcony and sea view in Louisa Lodge. In better weather the b...

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for two nights. We stayed in the Louisa building. The room was large and clean. We unpacked and then my wife sat on the bed and sunk nearly to the floor. The mattress on my wife's side and my side were completely useless( two single beds pushed together). They were not solid and springs were bulging at the side. To be honest I could not be bothered to walk down to the main building and complain. We went out into the town, but did not tell reception about the mattress. We returned later on in the evening, having had a few beers !!! and went to bed. It was a terrible sleep, luckily we had been drinking so it was not until we got up in the morning that we felt the effects of the mattress. We informed reception and hoped that the duff beds would be changed. This did not happen because when we came back from town the duff beds were still there. Again I could not be bothered to complain and basically put up with them. The hotel itself is definitely 3 star. There was mould on the wall by the window a handle was missing from the window and generally the main building is old and tired. The staff are pleasant. The breakfast was just about ok. We will not be returning.

Room Tip: If you get allocated room 21 in the Louisa building, ask about the mattress.

Didn't stay there but booked dinner for two as non-residents. Lovely, personal attention in splendid environs, and the meal was excellent. But the car park was a long walk from the main hotel and there were no lights in the car park or on the paths, so getting from the car park and back again was really difficult. I left my husband at the hotel entrance so he wouldn't have to walk back to the car, and found myself in a one-way system to get out, so I couldn't pick him up from there - all a bit of an anticlimax to what was otherwise a lovely evening

We recently enjoyed a special winter offer three day break at the Purbeck House Hotel, staying in the Louisa Lodge. The hotel is centrally placed in Swanage but we found the Lodge very quiet as it is situated in the grounds behind the main hotel. The entrance to the car park is a little narrow but there is ample parking. Our room was bright and well appointed, with comfortable beds and a good bathroom. The restaurant looked very inviting but we just had one bar meal which was good and we were also very happy with the breakfasts: we especially enjoyed the sausages and the smoked salmon. We would certainly recommend this hotel and will stay there next time we visit Dorset.

Room Tip: The Louisa Lodge offers modern and quiet accommodation

we arrived on new years day travelling back to Cornwall decided to stop over on the way. We hadn't booked, just took a chance. We saw this hotel which looked very impressive from the road and decided to see what it was like. We asked to see the room before we decided and the staff were happy to show us the available rooms so we could take our pick. We had room 16 which is more like a suite, having a sitting area, bathroom, bedroom area and walk in closet. We had the best nights sleep ever, very quiet and comfortable bed. The room is dual aspect and you have views of the gardens, the bay and town. Breakfast was very good a buffet selection and menu with full English, bottomless coffee pot. The staff are all very friendly and do all they can to make your stay a good one. We loved it so much we stayed an extra night.

This has always been our first choice of hotel when visiting Swanage and when we have not been able to get a room here we have always tried to visit the restaurant. We booked in for a weekend before Christmas and were allocated rooms in the house. On arrival room had the most awful overpowering smell (seemed like some cleanser or disinfectant in bathroom) so opened window and went to dinner. We were asked if we wanted to eat in bar as so few people would be in restaurant - ie hotel was half empty) Meal was very enjoyable and service good but on return smell in room was worse and had to relocate! Member of staff that night was very helpful indeed but seemed to be unsure which rooms were double and which single etc so this took some time! Replacement room was ok but freezing cold without heating! The next day we asked to be moved to Louisa Lodge (where rooms were modern) but this was met with some resistance and housekeeping did sort out heating. Staff in the morning seemed rather grudging about putting things right and this was our first real surprise and disappointment.

When we booked dinner the next evening we discovered that it was a special Christmas Carvery with just the one sitting. We went to the dining room to discover it was in fact a Christmas Party - many external guests and we would be sitting on a table for two surrounded by large party groups. No one had told us this when we were asking about dinner earlier. We asked for advice on where to eat in town and were given directions to a restaurant which was closed. When we complained about this and said we were regular guests and always chose to stay here and how disappointed and inconvenient this was - we were simply told - "well you chose to book on line"!!!!

We were so disgusted and had had such an uncomfortable night before that we checked out and will not consider staying there again. We felt that on this occasion all energies were directed to the 'Christmas party' and other guests were an irritation! It seemed to be of little interest or consequence that we have made a point of staying here a couple of times a year for the last few years! Not impressed at all! Feel rather sad as this is like losing a comfortable old friend!! Can hotels these days really afford such dismissive treatment of guests?
