We took advantage of a special offer at The Grand as we wanted to do a bit of walking in the Purbecks. The walking was great, scenery spectacular, and The Grand Hotel was the icing on the cake. Maybe it's a bit dated and the joints are a bit creaky but the staff more than make up for it. Without exception they were polite, attentive and efficient. We had intended to eat out but there wasn't much open elsewhere in Swanage and the bar restaurant menu looked OK so we thought we'd risk it. It's not The Ivy but perfectly adequate and hard to beat as regards value for money. Service was excellent. The bed was comfortable and everything was very clean. I didn't sleep well but that was more down to the torrential rain and the fact we like to have a window open. I did think the creaky floorboards from the room above would keep me awake but it wasn't the case. The bathroom was dated but the shower in the bath was hot and powerful. Breakfast was Very good - some of the best kippers I've had, and the poached egg was runny (easy thing to overcook!). And the views from the dining room - just beautiful. We'll be back!

The one criticism? The spa. What was there was adequate although the sauna felt like it was built in the 1970s. But the opening times? It closed at 6pm and didn't open again until after breakfast had finished at 9.30am. Not terribly useful for the average active guest I would have thought.

We decided to go to the hotel on the spur of the moment, we were warmly welcomed by the staff .On entrance there was a lovely fire, many floral displays and unique pictures on the walls by local Artists . . The views overlooking the bay were beautiful, all the staff were very friendly,. The conservatory was warm and inviting very tranquil and relaxing as was the lounge area. Our room was lovely and clean, very warm with beautiful views . The food was excellent , we received first class service and the waitresses were very friendly and helpful especially Irene. We arrived midweek and had no trouble parking in allocated spaces, the hotel is within easy walking distance to the town. This is one hotel that we will definitely go back to again .

Room Tip: Rooms with sea view, are lovely with beautiful sound of the sea

We only stay at the Grand when there are offers on but we've been coming on and off for years. The view from the bedroom windows is fantastic and well worth coming here for. Our bed was comfortable and the room clean but the bathroom looked dated and there was some mould on the ceiling. Nevertheless the water was hot and I much appreciated a soak in the bath. We visited in January and during a howling gale it was very cold in the lounge as the conservatory doors were left wide open; once I had the sense to get up and close them it was OK. The breakfast was served with a friendly smile and would have been good if it had all been hot. I was not over-impressed with the bar food but did not eat in the restaurant. There's a health club downstairs that you can use if you're a guest; we went down and played table tennis. I'd stay here again, but only with a sea view and not at full price.

Room Tip: Go for a sea view with a double window.

First we have to say that the staff in this hotel and superb!! They are very polite friendly and helpful, we had a panoramic view room which does cost a little more but was defiantly worth the experience even in January to open the curtains to see an exhilarating start to the day! Our room was comfortable but without any finery but you always have to remember this is 3 stars only despite it looking like a grand old hotel, yes it's a bit faded but is has charm. The breakfasts were superb as was the service, we also had a quick snack lunch on the conservatory terrace which was equally as good. We would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Go for the panoramic view, it's worth the little extra to make the stay special.

We have stayed at The Grand before because we love the view and position of the hotel. The hotel has seen better days but good in an old fashioned sort of way.
Our twin bedded room 206 was fine, beds comfortable, but the bath tap dripped non stop, the sink was partially blocked, the kettle lid hinge was broken, the one bedside light between the beds was small and did not give sufficient light for bedtime reading. Breakfast was fine but we would not eat dinner at the hotel again. Wear something warm in the lounge and dining room. Come on Grand Hotel, get it sorted!

Room Tip: First and second floor rooms superior to third floor rooms.

The hotel is in a wonderful position overlooking the sea and Swanage. But unfortunately it relies on its former glories and has to change.
Arrived Friday 10th Jan. at reception to be totally ignored by receptionist as she was on the phone. Eventually booked in to be given room 209.
Room was OK. with nice view from window. However needs updating especially the bathroom with very old fashioned high level cistern and tiling.
After going out for the evening returned to find the mattress to be the worst Ive ever found anywhere worn out with all springs sticking thru.
Mattress was changed and a reduction was offered at checkout but there's no excuse.
The manager told me that if the customers don't complain she doesn't know about any problems which in my opinion is absolute rubbish.
Oh and by the way had to ask for cups to be replaced on first morning as they were dirty.

Room Tip: Didnt use room service or spa so ignore rating as cant remove it.

If you are looking for that special place to impress your loved one and want luxury then read the reviews before you go so you are under no illusion.I booked this as a treat but was greatly disappointed. I can imagine that back in the 60's and 70' and earlier The Grand was the hotel for the discerning. Sadly i have to agree with the other reviewers. There is a limit to how long you can keep dressing up the past. Once the owners realise this and start charging suitable prices relevant to the quality then we will be assured what we are getting. The advertising material is misleading and overstated. Even at £50.00 special offer i still feel it was overpriced. I too would have walked out if i was paying anymore. Thats probably why they take a non refundable deposit.
Single? then you will probably be put in the smallest room on the 3rd floor I've ever seen, you hit your head when standing up to try and see the sea view which is obscured by the hotel name sign, thats after the pidgeons move from their nesting place.
Twin 2nd floor sea view very dated, lovely view but uncomfortable bed and cold. Double 1st floor over entrance - noisy and pokey.
The radiators went off at night. Woke up shivering. The hot water was cold in the morning.
Breakfast 1st class, good choice and tasty, service with a smile. Lovely view. Bar areas refurbished and lovely conservatory to look out across the bay. You will struggle to find a carpark space at busy times and have to walk some distance. Appears the staff have priority. The staff however are the best asset to this hotel. Indoor plunge pool and spa and gym adequate for a quick dip but not for relaxing or indulging. A seaside Hotel suitable for those with young family as own beach access. Hopefully with the income from the sale of the new beach huts this hotel will get its badly needed refurbishment.

Room Tip: If you have facilities preferences then best to ask in advance and pay the upgrade price as i couldn...
