“Great value”

I booked with my family via a promotional offer on their main website. As avid hostellers my family and I have stayed at numerous hostels across the country and our short stay at Swanage did not dissapoint. The service was excellent, the charming old building was clean and warm and the home cooked meals were hot and tasty. We paid around £45 for accommodation and an evening meal which if your shop around is by far the best value accommodation in Swanage. We hope to return in 2013.

Room Tip: The hostel has several sea view rooms. We were told these are allocated on a first come first served...

I stayed recently in a family room with my two children. Here's the positive: It is a beautiful building from the outside and the entrance hall, dining room and lounge are lovely rooms. The staff were very polite, friendly and helpful. Swanage is a great place and there's lots to do.

Unfortunately, we were very disappointed with the accommodation. YHA really do need to raise their standards if they are to survive. The concept of youth hostels is great but a big let down if standards aren't maintained. I don't think we will risk going to YHA again as a result of this experience.

In summary: Carpets throughout are worn and filthy. Mattresses and pillows worn and need replacing. General unpleasant smell throughout the hostel, particularly in bedrooms (possibly from dirty carpets and bedding?). Communal kitchen tiny and lack of utensils and crockery - guests have to store their food in bags on the floor! Showers useless with a tiny trickle of water that was either scalding hot or freezing cold (I didn't shower my kids as a result). One toilet downstairs, not cleaned and blocked several times to overflowing point.

Our room was next to the toilets, they were also continually blocked. On one occasion a staff member tried unblocking one of the toilets using a mop covered in a bin liner that was shoved into the toilet to unblock it - resulting in the toilet contents spraying out on the walls and floor! No gloves or mask worn. The floor was then quickly wiped with a paper towel and that was that!. Surely some detergents should have been used to clean up afterwards as this was a health risk to all walking on the toilet floor and outside carpet area.

And of course, having carpets in a busy hostel doesn't make much sense in the first place!

Sorry to post a negative review. All of this is easy to fix. YHA really do need to start spending some money to make hostels easier for staff to keep clean and pleasant for guests.

Just a short walk down the hill to the beach. Lovely old building. Some bedrooms rather small with nowhere to put luggage and some with old style YHA mattresses which are not v comfortable. Kitchen in need of renovation. Staff v friendly and helpful. Pool table kept kids amused. Overall good.

Room Tip: Ask about size of room. Also the rooms at the front have a good view.

I was in room 14 ,which was a small room which was for 4 ppl, there wasn't enough space but it was enough for us 3 tht shared that room, there wasn't any places to put clothes but we kept them in suitcases, other than that, it was a beautiful stay, and I would recommed it to anyone who would wanna stay in swanage!, the veiws are amazing too xox

Our family room was small and durty. No space in it. No table for my kid. Everything had to be put on the little durty ground. No towell. But durty floor. Smelling matratz and a small window with a view on a roof.

And this little room with 4 beds. A prison with durt would have been closed.

And it did cost me and my 4,5 year old about 40 pounds.

SWANAGE YHA.....We stay here for couple of nights.... we found the staff to be helpful and nice. Our room was quite large and ok.... but no wardrobe or hanging hook for clothes.
Games Room and Lounge was very good and quite large.... the only minor downside was the evening meals that we pay £11.95 for 3 course meal was a disappointing.... and boring... but otherwise we had a good stay.

Stayed here for 4 nights for a late summer break with a toddler.

I thought the foyer, dining room, and lounge were all really impressive for a youth hostel. There is a very usable self-catering kitchen and laundry. our room was very basic but clean and bright. our particular room had a brilliant view out across the bay.

To be honest, it took a day to get used to the workings and conventions of a youth hostel like the shared kitchen and ordering meals in advance and so on. Likewise, for one night we stayed in one of their 6 bedded rooms. It took a few minutes to get used to the bizarre looking, but very practical bed arrangement,

The only downside for me was trying to manoeuvre a 3 year-old around the very compact (but usually clean) toilets and bathrooms.

The staff were very friendly, very helpful and knew the local area and attractions well.

Even the weird, inconvenient stuff was sort of fun. We met a lot of interesting, nice people. YHA Swanage has inspired us to visit other YHAs.

Recommended!
