Lovely hostel, pretty clean and spacious with a games room and a lounge. Good location, up a hill but well within walking distance of the centre and the pubs and restaurants.
Dinner smelt good although we didn't eat there, breakfast did the job
Just make sure you check what times any large groups will be eating breakfast or you could find yourself at the back of a long queue!

It has been a few years since my last YHA stay. But swanage was considerably better than the last without being great.

Sharing a dorm you can't expect much.
It smelt a bit damp in the room and the toliets/showers weren't exactly spotless, but neither were they filthy. Bed was comfy enough. Linen was clean. Breakfast was decent for a fiver.

Having never stayed in yh before, and for someone who has not been a youth for many moons, I was, to say the least dreading staying here. However, it far surpassed my expectations! It is a beautiful old building, full of charm and character, with wonderful views over Swanage Bay to enjoy once you have got your breath back after climbing the VERY steep hill....! Certainly not for someone with mobility issues ( the hill or the hostel).
It was far cleaner than I imagined especially considering the turnover of guests although it did have a rather musty smell at first but you soon became accustomed to it. We stayed in a twin room, 2 metal bunk beds..I still chuckle at the thought of my friend & I in these prison issue type beds, in fact my first words when we opened the door to our room was ' blimey it's like a cell', luckily my fear of heights bagged me the bottom bunk! There was just a hand basin, a stool & a chair + 2 plug sockets, no where at all to hang any clothes, luckily we'd packed a couple of coat hangers, so could hang a couple of things from the ends of the bed. The toilets and showers were very clean and we never had to wait to use them even though the hostel was full in the week we stayed.
I tried the cooked breakfast once, it was good value for £5, we didn't try any other hot meals as there was competitively priced meals in town.
The self catering kitchen was small and In dire need of modernisation, 4 slice toasters and a couple of extra kettles and oh yes a few egg cups would be handy! Unfortunately some of the guests didn't observe the kitchen rules and a few mums insisted on having the whole family in there to cook, plate up & even eat at the work surfaces even though there is a very spacious dining room to eat in. This was very inconsiderate to other guests, as was having toddlers trailing around even though it was clearly marked no under 7s in the kitchen! That said obviously people would make allowances for anyone staying alone with small children but sometimes I do despair at the lack of common sense and consideration in some!
The staff were polite and helpful but very low key, all in all I have mixed feelings about the hostel, it's rather expensive with basic facilities but rather charming too.

stayed at the youth hostel, we had a twin room, well a set of very thin metal bunk beds, a hand basin and a couple of chairs at either end of beds.... only one person could walk past the beds as there wants really any floor space! the showers were kept very clean and the water was hot at all times, and the WC were also kept clean, in fact the cleanliness of the hostel was good. the shared self catering kitchen got very busy at times with families wanting to cook, serve and eat at the worktops, limiting room for others, there was a sign on the door to say no under 7s allowed in kitchen, but many little children running around, maybe illiterate parents/carers staying here!!! it was near everything, great views but a very steep, sharp hill to walk up to return... not good for people who aren't good at this sort of height.. the cost of this was £24.00 each per night.... a cheap bed and breakfast with a tv and ensuite would be around £30-£35 so it could be worth paying the extra. the shared dormitories are cheaper but 8 to a room, with one basin, :( ..... the building was a lovely old building with some good features.......

Room Tip: maybe a stop over for a night or two!!!!!

Our family room cost £92 a night. For that we had a room to ourselves with three (x2) bunkbeds and a basin. Clean, decent, linen and bedding but everything else about the accommodation was poor value. The room smelt so we kept the windows open all the time. It was overdue for a deep clean, as was the whole building. The hostel has some impressive architectural features and has a very friendly feel to it (thanks to the helpful and plentiful staff) but at £92 a night it is not up to scratch in anyone's book. The lounge is a great resource as is the games room but the communal kitchen doesn't seem to have been updated for decades. The building's water supply needs modernisation too - the showers are no more than a dribble. When can we expect to see a commitment to driving up standards and providing an economic stay for hard-pressed families and travellers, YHA?

I spent one night in this YHA Hostel with 3 friends. It was ideally located 10min from the Ferry and 10min from the beach. The air in our room was a bit stale, once we aired the room it was fine. I recommend this hostel.

I've stayed at the Swanage Youth Hostel twice. It's clean, warm and secure. Typical youth hostel rooms, with bunk beds. Some rooms have 'skylight' windows - I had to climb on the bunk to open and close the window and blinds, so not ideal for someone who can't do that. Food is good quality, and again typical of a youth hostel. Showers good, with plenty of hot water.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the building, with a view out over Swanage.
