This was such a good value, fun 3 night package. There were about 18 guests aged 2-70 something from all walks of life. Several family groupings, some couples, some singles etc. Mixing was not compulsory but everyone seemed to enjoy each others company. A thoughtful gift was provided for each guest by the hostel manager. There were only 3 children (siblings) who were delightful. "Santa" involved them in giving out the guests gifts which had been individually chosen. The seasonal meals were outstanding, served by the hostels own staff and volunteers. Lovely walks daytime as weather good. There were fun games in the evenings for those who wanted to participate. The single guests were each given their own room. The building was beautifully decorated inside. Highly recommended! Couldn't fault this stay. Sorry this review is rather late. Major technology problems all year :(

Room Tip: Many dorms have a sea view so ask when booking

This was my first visit to a YHA property, having previously been apprehensive about staying. I have to say my first impressions of the property were extremely positive. We made this booking last minute (we turned up with a 4 month old baby) and were made to feel extremely welcome.

Before making a booking the staff showed us the rooms that were available, and explained that there was currently no heating. They quickly overcame this problem by offering an electric heater. The rooms were very clean and tidy and although containing bunk beds, were very comfortable.

Our room had a beautiful sea view and staff also provided a travel cot for our son. The showers looked brand new and the toilets extremely clean. The communal areas were very comfortable and welcoming as were the staff who assisted us. There is a licensed restaurant attached and the reception sells a variety of alcoholic and soft drinks. Breakfast is offered at £4.99 a person and is a good buffet style offering, which was very tasty.

The building and its sea views were stunning and coupled with the excellent value for money offered an excellent alternative for young families or couples on an active weekend away. If you like luxurious hotels then this is probably not the place for you, however we will be using YHA properties again having had such a wonderful experience here.

Thank you!!

Room Tip: Second floor rooms at front of property have stunning views.

The three-night Christmas package here was simply superb. It was extremely good value -
£139 for almost full board except Boxing Day lunch. Starting with mulled wine and mince pies
midday Christmas Eve, the stay excelled with wonderful meals and good company, abundant decorations and a festive atmosphere, created by cheerful and efficient staff.
It was an easy journey from Bournemouth station by bus over the Sandbanks ferry to Swanage
station, and a £3 taxi up the steep hill. But after that the hill climbs were a good antidote to all
the delicious meals we had.
We all had a sea view from our rooms, where a card and seasonal chocolate had been placed
on each pillow, a welcoming touch.
On Christmas Eve, the oldest of three young children staying suggested Santa and the reindeer might need a snack. They were escorted to the kitchen by the warden, and emerged with a tray of biscuits, carrots, juice and a glass, which was placed on a coffee table. By early morning the food had disappeared ...
At the nearby church, reached by alleyways which characterize this hilly town, the crib service
was attended by two donkeys, some small dogs and a huge friendly congregation.
Christmas Day included presents from the tree, all received with genuine delight (how did
they do it ?) and a truly excellent dinner.
Boxing Day was bright, blue and calm, just as well, because the annual sea swim was taking place (yes !) Our warden and assistant in Santa and snowman suits plunged bravely in, with about 30 other hardy souls including water polo teams and a few dogs, in aid of diabetic
children and the footie club. They earned every penny ... out of solidarity, I had a paddle ... it was freezing and HORRIBLE. After cheering this spectacle of courage, guests set off far and wide -
Corfe Castle, returning by steam train, St Aldhem's Head lighthouse, Old Harry rocks and more ...
Evening entertainment included hilariously wonderful parlour games led by the assistant
warden and his sister.
The building lent itself warmly to this gathering - a grey stone 19th century family house built by the man who laid the first trans-Atlantic cable. The panelled lounge overlooked the sea and was
comfortably furnished with several settees and cosy armchairs, warm and festive.
It was altogether a thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable stay, and the warden and staff were utterly fantastic.

Room Tip: A room with a sea view is great. I do not know if they all do.

The hospitality i received was first class, all the staff very professional and helpful. I couldn't fault any part of this hostel. The rooms was warm, clean and plenty of hot water and electric points. The showers clean and constant flowing hot water. Toilets ok too. The lounge- comfortable sofas, TV, lots of information and books to read and views towards the sea. There is a separate games room with internet WIFI so that keeps the lounge free of laptops! The breakfasts i had were superb and plenty of it for £4.99. The selection of cooked foods were hot and delicious. The evening meals also delicious, I've never been so spoilt at a hostel. From £7.95 - £9.95 you won't go hungry and a good choice. Plenty of car parking at the rear, also outside the hostel. Short walk down the hill into town where there are an array of small shops and all the banks and co-op supermarket. Walks to the lighthouse and to the Castle Folly along the coast from the hostel so you can leave the car or great if you are travelling by public transport. Swanage railway and Beach near too.
A fantastic place to stay, with great hospitality and easy access to Coast and Countryside.

Room Tip: Bunkbeds in single sex rooms. All rooms have wash basins. Just ask if you have preferences or need...

Travelling alone, I stayed one night in Dec at Swanage. I was the only visitor that night and found the reception very friendly and helpful. The room had a seaview and was warm and cosy. The lounge, kitchen and dining rooms were clean and tidy and the breakfast was excellent provided by another friendly member of staff. Good size car park at the rear of the building. Very close to town centre and sea. Only problem was the water in the room wasn't hot, but had I stayed longer I would have mentioned it- the showers were available anyway. Good night and hope to stay again.

The building is lovely and the communal areas fine (an especially comfortable lounge with plenty to read). Unfortunately the carpets on the stairs are worn, the toilet and shower facilities working but very dated (taps only run when you are pressing on them making it difficult to wash your hands). Our room was very stuffy the window being non openable, ventilation being provided by a Velux style window in the ceiling, opened by climbing on one of the top bunks and probably of little use with rain and the wind in the wrong direction. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.

This establishment is shameful, a complete waste of time and money. The food was the epitome of vile. The breakfast was beyond poor, hideously cold beans, vulgar bacon, uncooked sausages and raw egg, I cannot imagine anything worse. The toilet smells revolting and brings bile to my throat, is the carbuncle on the backside of humanity. I severely do not recommend. However the room view was enjoyable. Looking from the window you're reminded that there is a pleasant world outside. That is all
