“Year 33 !”
Reviewed 16 August 2012

We have been camping at Ulwell now for 33 years, in various sized tents, for 2 week stays, long weekends, and one night stops. We have always found the showers and toilets to be clean, in good working order, and plenty of hot water. The shop is very well stocked and the take away food is very good and reasonably priced. We do not use the swimming pool or the bar/restaraunt so cannot comment. The only issue we have is that we would like the shop to stay, open longer in the evening, perhaps 7.00pm instead of 6.00pm. The management and staff are always friendly and helpful, the setting is relaxing and interesting, and perfect location to reach all the wonderful places to visit around that area. We have already booked for next year, and will continue to holiday there for many years to come.

Room Tip: Quote the size of your tent so they make sure you have a pitch large enough.

We stayed here during July and it's a fantastic place. Great views and not too far from the beaches of Studland or Swanage.

Everything was clean and tidy, the pool was great, although often busy, especially if the weather is bad. The shop was well stocked and the fresh bread every morning is a good touch.

The food in the Village Inn is excellent and good value, we also liked that many of the meals on the menu are available in smaller sizes for kids. The two barman, who I think are father and son, were extremely helpful, as were the staff everywhere on site and the pub quiz was good fun.

Overall very enjoyable and we will be back.

This was our second to visit to Ullwell as we found the location perfect, being halfway between Studland and Swanage. As per our previous trip, we found the site and Caravan very clean and well organised, while the staff are very helpful and friendly. The pool is a good size and there is a good children’s play area with football goals, volley ball net and climbing area.

For a family I would highly recommend the site except for the exceptionally rude barman, who blows a fuse at the sight of children near the bar and has a dislike of people going in to the bar for a late drink (any time after 10.00 pm)
On both our visits, he was trying to close early, in addition, he makes it quite clear you are not welcome coming up to the 11.00pm closing time.
Quote 1 when I asked to watch the Olympics on the TV AT 10.30pm “No because it keeps people in here” and " why do you want to drink in here at these prices when you can buy cans and drink outside your caravan like others do"

Quote 2 when I challenged his attitude " why do you come here, why don’t you go somewhere else"

We found the pub very quite but this may be due to the rude barman, the restaurant part of the pub does get busy early evening

I have complained to the site manager who promised to look into the barman problem and hopefully will retrain this unpleasant individual in customer care skills

Thank you for your review. First of all I (the barman in question) would like to apologise for being rude, in hindsight I realise that yes I was on this occasion and cannot apologise more. I hope it didn't affect your stay too much nor will it put you off coming again.

I would however like to clarify a couple of things.

I'll accept the point that I could have put the television on, but it wouldn't have been on for long as you actually asked for it on much nearer to closing than 10 30pm.

''why do you want to drink in here at these prices when you can buy cans and drink outside your caravan like others do" this refers to you asking me why it was quiet. I was trying to make the point that with the price of drinks being so much cheaper in shops and supermarkets compared to pubs this is what many people choose to do, it was not me suggesting you do this, and again, sorry if it comes across this way.

In response to my apparent issue with children at the bar, my manager has told me we do not allow children to sit at the bar as, according to my manager, it as is against the law/our license. I tried to explain this to you and said you could sit at one of the tables in the bar but you became argumentative.

Again however I accept I was rude and that I shouldn't have told you to go somewhere else again apologise.

I'm glad you enjoyed the majority of your stay and again apologise for being rude and hope it doesn't put you off staying with us again.

Our experience at Ulwell Cottage Carvan Park was rather disappointing after reading positive reviews! We travelled for 4 hours to get to the destination and it looked nice at first! The caravan that we stayed in wasn't clean and the interior wasn't at all pleasant. The nets (in the windows) had dead flies squished into them and the kettle had an awful amount of lime scale was absolutely appalling! The filter didn't work properly due to the build up which meant that it was ending up in our tea and coffee which wasn't pleasant in the slightest. The staff in the sites shop were often rude (certain staff) and made us feel uncomfortable! However, the pool on the site was great for the kids and was clean! Overall, our stay wasn't up to scratch and we will not be going on holiday to this caravan park again after this experience

Thank you for your review, and thanks to everybody who takes the time to write a review both good and bad.

We would like to adress a couple of issues raised in this review. Firstly all of our caravans that are let to the public are no more than 12 years old. Our reception staff are happy to discuss a caravans age, condition and facilities during the booking process.

Secondly, with regards to the issue with the kettle, Swanage is in a hard water area in which limescale does build up quickly. While this does not excuse the poor condition in which the kettle in your caravan was in, all guests are asked to report faults or problems as soon as possible. If you had mentioned the issue to our reception staff I can promise you they would have replaced the kettle with a suitable one ASAP.

Thirdly our caravans are thoroughly cleaned between each use by a team of experienced and efficient cleaners and we're sorry you found it unsatisfactory. This is an unfortunate one off.

Thankfully in over 50 years as a family run caravan park we recieve very few complaints and many of our customers return year on year, in some cases families have been staying with us for three generations.

The location and views are superb however, our stay wasn't, we have a dog so we rented a 'dog friendly van', to be fair these must be well over 20 years old and showing their age. The cooker was flithy, the settee was horrible and dirty, things weren't pleasant considering the cost of the van, as the week progressed it only got worse, fleas broke out in the van, in every room, covering our dog (who is a puppy and treated against fleas every 2 weeks), the quilts, pillows, everywhere, we were bitten. Our holiday ended early but the site refunded us for the vets spray and the 2 nights we lost, very polite and understanding staff, we're sorry that it turned out like it did, but we would stay in the camping fields for sure, superb location.

Found this site through Emily B’s review after she’d had a bad experience nearby, and I have to say that I’m glad we tried it. The site is nestled at the foot of Ballard Down and Godlingston Hill fairly near the Ferry Road but not so that the traffic ever disturbs you.

We arrived without a booking around lunchtime on Friday 13th July 12, but they were able to accommodate us easily on a pre-defined touring tent pitch that had an electric hook-up had we wanted one. There was plenty of room for our guy ropes and the car, and we weren’t right up against the neighbours on nearby pitches.

Our friends had a small tent so they went on one of the Hiker pitches, which are cheaper than the one we were on.

The grass was short – they were cutting it when we got there – and the pitches are nice and flat. Even ‘though the rain had been coming down for weeks beforehand, the pitches were soft but not sodden. Of course, there is nothing that the management can do about that!

The shower and toilet block were very clean, even ‘though the weekend that we there (for the 23rd Jazz Festival) was actually very wet. The showers are in a wet room type section and operate on a similar principle to that of the hand basin taps – you press the button and hot water – lots of it! – is delivered until the button comes out again. There is a seat and plenty of hooks to hang clothes and towels. Beware of putting your shoes on the floor as the shower is so powerful, they can get wet!

There was always loo paper, and soap dispensed from a pump set into the sink units. Two powerful hand driers ensured that there was no mess in the washbasin area. Other thoughtful touches were a free hairdryer, a bin for nappies, a bin for general waste and something I’ve never seen before – a double shower, presumably so that parents can take their small children in and not have to share the shower head.

Staff on Reception were polite, efficient, to the point but not particularly friendly.

It’s a twenty minute walk to the beach, and five more to get right into the heart of town. We always went down the lane rather than the main road as it is much quieter. A torch is definitely required when returning in the dark.

All in all, a great site, and I will definitely be going back.
