Ulwell Cottage Caravan Park
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 1 September 2013

I visited Ulwell Cottage Caravan park on 22nd July 2013 with a small group of friends. We stayed in the 'Dreamsend' static caravan and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of it. It was only a bronze rated van so the lowest in terms of choice of quality. We found the caravan to be very clean and tidy with everything you could need except for bed linen which we were happy to bring anyway as we preferred to bring our own.

The site has a superb location with lovely hilly views and near to the town and beach. The on-site shop was well stocked and not too overpriced like I have experienced before at other parks. Like another review on here, it was like a mini supermarket.

We had to amend our booking from 4 nights to 2 and the staff were very helpful in doing this for us and refunding the difference - outstanding customer service.

We found the site to be clean, free of litter and well kept overall.

I liked the park so much that I am returning on 9th-13th September for a longer stay and can't wait to return!

Thank you for a lovely experience and continue to keep up the good work!

Myself, my daughter (24) my son (15) and our little dog, stayed at this fab place, from 13th of August until the 16th, I wish it had bee longer. How we came to stay was by chance, we had booked in to camp at Beacon Hill campsite for 7 nights, but only stayed for one night as it was the worse place I have ever had the miss fortune to go to. As we had traveled all the way fro West Yorkshire, we had found our selves at a bit of a lose end, we were lucky to have picked up a holiday guide to local sights and spotted Ulwell. We phoned and spoke to a friendly gentleman who said that there was a static van available until Friday and would be ready for us from 3pm that day, Went straight back and packed up our tent from that dreadful Beacon Hill sight, then drove over to Swanage, about 30mins away. We had some lunch and made our way to Ulwell, we got there about lunch time and were surprised to see how beautiful an clean the sight looked, I went into the reception and was amazed that the Caravan was ready for us,even though we had turned up about 3 hours early. We were shown to our Caravan, it was small compact immaculate and had a beautiful Sea view. (Brayhead). We had the best time ever. The pool was fab, and the shop was fully stocked, more like a miny super market. the Bar was lovely and the food superb. The staff were friendly and so helpful they couldnt do enough for you. W would highly recommend this sight, and will be coming back soon. Thank God what started out as the Holiday from Hell, at Beacon Hill, turned out to be the best short break I have ever had in one of the nicest sights I have ever stayed at. Nice One ..

We stayed at Ulwell Cottage in the last week of July.
We rented a caravan and booked early in the latter part of 2012. We were a party of two adults and two children aged 13 and 10.This was our first visit to Swanage and Dorset.

We were able to access our caravan early which was a huge relief. Our initial impression of the caravan was pleasing. It was spotlessly clean, we had ample parking and the caravans were not too close to each other. The caravan site is pleasantly landscaped with all you need at hand. We were asked twice if the caravan was clean enough. With the exception of the bar man at the Village Pub the site staff were very helpful attentive and chatty.

A week in the caravan was a little bit of a struggle for us. It was a 4 berth and although the main bedroom was adequate, our two boys struggled with the size of the beds and their bedroom. After two nights and our (tall) 13 year old banging into the 'wall' every time he turned over, we moved his mattress into the living area. If we hired a caravan again we would definitely book a larger berth caravan.
I would advise that you take your own hangers if you have older children as the hangers in the cupboard are for toddlers. Luckily there is ample storage in the double room. There are no irons or ironing boards for you to freshen up your clothes if needed. There is an ironing board and iron in the amenities block however I had no intention of trudging there and bought an iron at Asda.

The bathroom was also vey cramped although the shower cubicle is huge. We had plenty of hot water and did not change the settings for the hot water or heating.

The main living area was adequate as was the kitchen area. There is everything you need.
We would have liked a proper seating area outside the caravan. We asked for a caravan with a veranda, however it was more of a walkway. We could not of sat and eaten outside as a family. There were two outside chairs, you would need to take a picnic table or take the dining area one if you want to eat or spend more time outside.

Our boys loved the pool and also the recreational area (weather permitting). The shop is well stocked for essentials. Some reviews have criticised the prices, they are no more or less than you would expect for an onsite holiday park, obviously you would not do a weekly shop here! Fresh bread, rolls etc, beautiful. Also try the ice cream, it is delightful. The staff in the shop are lovely, helpful and very chatty.

On a few occasions when our boys went swimming we thought we would go for a quiet drink. The Village pub opened at 6pm. This is pricey! We did not have meal in the Village Pub for a number of reasons.
Firstly despite the prices we found it to be very unwelcoming. The bar man was quite sullen and even though he was not busy he would not engage in any conversation or niceties.

Secondly, they ask that children under 12 do not go into the bar area. I totally appreciate this as the meals are very expensive and the last thing people want especially if they are child free is for children to disturb their meal. Families are encouraged to stay in the conservatory where there are board games etc to play. This does not have much of an atmosphere and feels like a café. I would not want to pay to eat here as when you eat out on holiday you want it to feel like a treat. Another important point is the toilets in this area are terrible. We decided to eat in our caravan or go out.
We were lucky enough to stay here during Swanage Carnival week. From our caravan we were able to see the Red Arrows Aerobatic Team and the fireworks. Fantastic.

This was our first time to the area, it is beautiful and there is lots to do. We loved and preferred the area of Poole but the almost daily ferry crossing (£3.50) and the queues do take their toll, no pun intended!

Overall, this is a lovely caravan site which is quiet. If you enjoy a more social site with all singing and dancing entertainment this would not be for you.

Another visit to the only campsite we would even think of visiting in the area. Once again we were not disappointed with a great plot near to well laid out facilities. The plots are nicely spaced so you are not on top of the next tent or caravan. We will be back at the end of August!

We booked the morning of our arrival and got the very last pitch (55) and considered we were lucky, as we had stayed here before and remembered how nice it was. However, before we stayed in a different section and this time the road area around our pitch is quite narrow and so the pitches are very close to each other both opposite and alongside, so as long as you don't mind that, this is a lovely peaceful camp and for £28 a night for 2 adults, very reasonable.

Room Tip: Try to avoid the "mid" section - pitches are a little on top of each other

Our first camping trip as a family and we loved this place. Friendly, helpful staff, good sized pitch which was pre-booked based on our tent size, and excellent clean facilities.

Site location fantastic for exploring Purbeck. Lots of lovely walks on your doorstep, and a bus stop right outside.

A high turnover of campers during our stay, all of whom respected the need for quiet after 11pm, and our kids made lots of new friends.

Shop convenient if a little pricey, didn't really use the Village Inn, but the pool was a family favourite. We all loved cooling off during the July heatwave and did not find it cold as suggested by other reviews.

Can't wait to return.

Lovely little area, quiet and peaceful.
If you need to get into Poole however it is a bus stop outside the campsite (number 50) down to Swanage, then another bus (number 40) into Poole. Takes 1 hour 10 mins!!! long journey!
Swanage is ok, got nice choice of shops. Co-Op only and Budgens. Both pretty expensive. No other supermarkets around unless you get to Poole.
The campsite is nice. Nice and friendly and clean. The only thing that is poor is the swimming pool and the very expensive onsite shop. Would be nice if the description "heated pool" meant that it is heated. It is cold! Pointless getting in. There is also no lockers! Bit crazy if it was busy, I wouldn't like to leave my belongings there for anyone to pinch if it was busy. The shop is expensive. Been to thousands of campsites with shops and they are normal prices, not dear to rip you off. Never bought anything and I suggest going to Swanage to get anything.
Would be back though as it is nice place, just won't be going to the shop or swimming pool unless they increase the heat of the water by a lot.

Hello Linda,

We're glad you enjoyed your stay with us and hope you stay with us again.

With regards to the Swimming Pool, the pool is heated and the temperature checked throughout the day (there is a themometer on poolside should any customer want to check - just ask the lifeguard on duty). The reason the water may feel a little cold when entering may be because, for various reasons, the air temperature has to be kept a few degrees above the water temperature.

We do not have lockers but have a system by where you place belongings in a 'box' and leave them on the shelf on poolside where they can be monitored by staff, yourselves and CCTV. We have not experienced any theft using this method.

With regards to the shop, we're sorry you found some items expensive. We try to offer a range of products and varying prices and with many items we have a cheaper 'Euro Shopper' range to go alongside the big brands.

Our intention is certainly not to rip anyone off.
