Alfriston is beautiful village with quaint old buildings housing interesting shops and pubs. It has a wonderful old church and a priest house which was, we believe, the first National Trust property in England. Chestnuts fits snuggly into this memorable cameo of an English village. Colour drenched hanging baskets overflowing with summer flowers welcome us through the door into the tiny tea room. As always a warm welcome from the owners and then we face the challenge of choosing from the very interesting menu knowing that everything here is home made. Delicious quiches, fresh salads and soups at lunchtime, and for later on cream teas, homemade scones and wonderful cakes. Chestnuts is surely an English tea room at its very best.

We stayed here one night while walking the South Downs Way. It was one of the worst places we stayed. They even have the cheek to ask you to review them on trip advisor 'if you enjoyed your stay' well we didn't. We were met by the owner who wasn't exactly full of the joys of life. Our room to the front was a small twin room. The mattresses were saggy and must have never been replaced. We were told that we had a shared bathroom but weren't allowed a bath because there wasn't enough hot water! Generally felt the place was a bit tatty. Breakfast in the tea room was okay.
