Food was lovely, nice size portions and not a bad price. The roast dinner was £9.50 and there was no problem with extra gravy or any other changes to the meal. I think i met the owners on the first night, very friendly and the pub had a nice atmosphere. However, on the two occasions when the owners son ran the bar the atmosphere was different. We were asked to leave the beer garden as neighbours had previously complained about the noise - we moved inside but regulars were not asked to move and later the barman was outside with his friends making considerable noise. Also, the previous evening we were told to leave at 11.10 as the pub was closing, we were hurried out. As we passed the window we could see the other side of the pub full of regulars enjoying their drinks - my friend said he would never go there again. I think its a shame one person has spoiled the experience and I would go back as the owners were very nice and the food was great.

Initial impressions were quite good. A decent pub in beautiful small village, with a sprinkling of locals enjoying an evening drink.
But when our party of 4 turned up, us wanting some drinks and some food seemed like a massive hassle for them.
They also became miffed when we ordered several things off the menu which they didn't have!
The food was quite good and reasonably priced, but the service was pretty unfriendly.

I took my Australian friends here for lunch when they visited in January having eaten there on two other occasions. We all had the steak pie and it was delicious. Mulled wine was good and it has a nice atmosphere. Would certainly recommend it.

At around 3pm after a long walk with the dog, we'd missed lunch and wanted a mid afternoon bite. We had stopped at other villages and pubs but couldn't get food. We arrived at the Smugglers in Alfriston and they could not have been more welcoming. We chose the whitebait which was very nicely cooked and shared some chips with mayo. Our dog was also made very welcome and they allowed us to feed him (with his own food and bowl under our table; no other diners were nearby as we sat in the front near the bar). The landlord and landlady are warm and friendly and entertained us with local stories of ghosts and witches. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and will definately go back.

The Smugglers is a nice pub which seems to be the favourite of the local people in Alfriston which is a good sign. Perhaps the best place in the village to go if you want a good pint. The bar staff are friendly. However their food service needs to be seriously improved. There were 7 of us and we had booked a table well beforehand. The menu offered a good variety and was a little cheaper than other nearby hostelries so this was promising. However the service was awful. We had to wait over an hour after ordering our food. After that some of our food was of poor quality, though other meals were acceptable or even good.
