A very pleasant place to have a couple of quiet drinks on your own. Lively but not loud. Friendly staff.

Good food, good beer, inglenook fireplace, a great atmosphere. In the gorgeous village of Alfriston, great for a stop off if you are walking/ biking the SDW.

Thank you for your comments. I am delighted you enjoyed your visit to the 'Smugglers' and we look forward to welcoming you back soon. As you say we are very handy for the South Downs Way and we have a good selection of food and local ales to sustain the weary traveller!

The pub is under new management with a chef "smuggled in" from another Sussex Inn. The first night we just had a couple of drinks but loved the atmosphere of the place so we returned the next evening for a meal. Sat on the Chesterfields in front of the huge inglenook fireplace with a roaring fire. A couple of pints of local Harveys' beer; a decent bottle of Rioja and we both had the best belly pork I have ever tasted with wonderful crackling; mashed potatoes and veg. All for £50. No room for a sweet which was a shame as we saw some lovely examples served up to other tables. despite the good food this remains a real pub with lots of locals just coming in for a drink. The landlord seems to know what he is doing and I hope he retains that balance and avoids the gastro pub route which I'm sure his chef could service. We will definitely return

Thank you for your lovely comments. As you know, this was our first week as the new owners so it was lovely to read such a positive review. We are committed to serving freshly cooked, locally sourced food. Simon smokes his own duck and James cooks the belly pork using an old family recipe. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Came here for An evening meal and was blown Away.. Partner Had the rump steak which was cooked beautifully ordered the peppercorn sauce but the steak had so much flavour He didn't use it. I had the ribs which were in a beautiful BBQ sauce and the meat just fell off the bone was absolutely delicious.. Both had desserts cheesecake was lovely as was the butterscotch pudding.. Thoroughly enjoyed our night and the staff were brilliant.. Under new owners I can't wait to see what the future holds for them. We'll definitely be back

It all works well with tasty food and good ales in this wonderfully historic building. The rear beer garden is larger than expected, but, the food service is so slow compared with visits of only a few years ago. We have been in there of an evening and also lunchtimes, and it is always the same ~ even when the venue is not seemingly overstretched with diners.
The service is usually friendly and the range of ales is good. So close to being excellent ...
