“Good and friendly but overpriced B&B”
Reviewed 15 May 2013

Stayed here recently while walking the South Downs Way. Owners very friendly and helpful - didn't mind water dripping off wet clothes and offered to tumble dry them. Breakfast good. Room was OK and shared bathroom and toilet turned out not to be much of a problem. However, £50 for single occupancy was a lot and I paid less the following night for a much better room.

The friendly owners of this place go out of their way to make you feel at home here, a B&B doesn't get much more homely than this. The breakfast was incredible and well needed before a long walk down to the Seven Sisters, and the rooms are clean, cosy and nice and warm. Would love to come back here to Alfriston and stay a little longer.

Room Tip: There are only 3 rooms here, so book early to get the double!

We came across this cafe quite by accident; we had already had lunch, but I suddenly felt very thirsty and Chestnuts Cafe was a very welcome sight.
I had a soft drink, which was very refreshing, while my wife enjoyed a latte.
Despite only feeling thirsty, the range of cakes on offer soon tempted me. To have gluten-free cakes is - in my experience - a sure sign of a cafe that treats its customers well. We shared a lemon drizzle polenta cake and enjoyed it immensely.

The ambience is warm and welcoming, and as an avid reader, the bookshelves were a nice touch. All second-hand that I could tell, but in good condition, they are there for anyone to read while sat with their food/drink/both. However, should you wish to borrow or buy one or two, then the owners are amenable to some sort of agreement.

As I implied, the cafe is tucked away at the opposite end of the high street to the rest of the shops etc, but it is well worth the (minimal) effort to stroll that little bit further and enjoy this little gem.

Room Tip: Only used the cafe - sorry (we're locals)

We'd hiked 12 miles from Eastbourne to Alfriston on the South Downs Way in snow and sub-zero conditions. The glass of scotch at one of the two medieval, beamed pubs one minute walk down the high street warmed us up a little, but it was really the friendliness of Chestnuts owners Mary and Malcolm which did the trick.

OK, we would have preferred a double room instead of a twin and to have our own bathroom, but we knew the deal when we signed up and it was the best priced room for miles around. Chestnuts turned out to be no more than a 3-minute walk from the South Downs Way, no one laughed at my putting orange juice on my cereal because I'm lactose intolerant, the beds were comfy, the breakfast delicious and the owners impossibly friendly. We'll be staying here again, twin bedroom and shared bathroom and all, if we're in the neighbourhood.

We had booked to stay at Chestnuts for one night, as a natural stop-off point along the South Downs Way. However, the walk had gone catastrophically wrong, and at 8pm we were lost in the pitch black and freezing out on the Downs. Malcolm and Mary, the new owners, were able to help get us orientated, and then came out and essentially rescued us - at no extra cost or apparent inconvenience!

This may have positively coloured our view of the place, however, even accounting for this, it was fantastic! A wonderful cosy building with beams and unusually low ceilings in a few places, aesthetically pleasing bathroom facilities, and the bedrooms (and the entire place in fact) has been furnished and decorated with much attention to detail. The breakfast was enormous, baked beans in a ramekin was a revelation, and the tea rooms were filled with the glorious smell of home baking! And to top it all off, Malcolm and Mary (new owners as of December) were absolutely lovely, and helped advise us regarding walking routes, activities and transport. We wish them all the best for the future.

We stayed here for one night while walking the South Downs Way. New owners Mary and Malcolm are very welcoming and friendly. Rooms are terrific, with a shared bathroom, though we were the only guests. It was great having full bookshelves everywhere. We had lovely afternoon tea in the tearooms, and were given a discount as guests. The breakfast was the best of all we had along our walk. Looks like the new owners are keeping up the excellent reputation of Chestnuts.

We stayed here for one night while walking the South Downs Way. We had a lovely friendly welcome and felt at home with Jane who is the owner. The room was comfortable, clean and well equiped. It was a bit strange that there were a lot of the owner's personal things in the room but this didn't really bother us. We were sharing a bathroom and toilet with other guests but we were able to get in there whenever we needed to so it wasn't a problem although I can see that it might have been. However, we have no complaints about the bathroom as it was clean and there was plenty of hot water. Breakfast was good Jane also supplied us with sandwiches for our lunch which were very nice. The B&B is right on the main road but it also has the benefit of being really close to shops, pubs etc.
