Stayed for 2 nights and went walking in South Downs. Alfriston is a very nice village to stay in and has a few nice pubs, restaurants and tea rooms. The hotel was good, rooms were compact but nice. Our room was above the kitchen and the extract fan and early morning cooking smells were not ideal, but they happily moved us to another room for night 2. Both breakfast (which was included) and dinner in their restaurant were excellent. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Would stay there again.

We were recently guests at a wedding here. Deans Place is a lovely old manor house with large peaceful gardens with views to the Downs. The arrangements for the wedding all went smoothly and the reception room was beautifully decorated. All the staff were attentive and ready to make changes along the way to make the day go well. My son and I have the Coeliac condition which means we have to avoid food containing wheat barley or rye because of the gluten in them. Normally this is a nightmare when eating out because of the lack of control over what happens in the kitchen. At Dean's Place this wasn't a problem at all. They had been forewarned and knew exactly who needed the gluten-free meals and paid particular attention to serving my son and myself separately with our 'special' meals. The gluten-free food was excellent, imaginative, tasty and well presented and even drew admiring looks from others on the table with 'normal' food. We would have no hesitation in trusting their restaurant or bar food.

Just decided to have a night away on my own and booked for that night. Arrived and was upgraded from a single to a small double which had wonderful views (although the dressing table mirror obscured them which was a shame). Spent over an hour relaxing in the garden enjoying the views with it all to myself. Dinner in the bar was lovely and breakfast in my room in the morning at no extra cost a real treat. The staff were extremely nice and very helpful - nothing was too much trouble. Got a better price booking on their website than was quoted over the phone. Really liked it there. I can imagine it quite noisy and busy on wedding weekend though so would check unless your part of the party!

We stayed for two nights in this hotel in the lovely village of Alfriston. The room was clean and spacious and we had two good night's sleep. The breakfast is very good with quality bacon and lovely toast. In fact, thinking about it is making me hungry!

The bar is very pleasant and well furnished. We found the service polite and professional. We did not book the evening meal but I overheard other guests saying how good it was. The hotel has ample parking sand it is set back from the road.

The village itself offers a range of pubs/restaurants all of which seemed to be of a high standard. We also spent tow nights at the Star (please see other review) and ate pleasing meals at the George Inn and the Cricketers (located outside the village).

This hotel is truly in picturesque surroundings on the edge of a busy but quirky village. It's a great place to stay if you want to walk in the area or explore heritage sites. The bedroom was a little on the small side and bathroom fairly basic but everything was very clean. The staff were friendly and helpful although the service at breakfast was a bit hit and miss and you had to take the initiative asking for things. The food was great and the general ambiance was great coming from the historic building part and well manicured gardens- there was even the possibility to play croquet if the weather was good enough. We really liked the Hotel and would go back.

We stayed here for 2 nights in a double room - very comfortable bed, good furnishings, shower over the bath. (The bathroom could have done with a blind/curtain - the white net at the bathroom window seemed hardly adequate when the light was on.)
The lounge/bar area is attractively and comfortably furnished although we didn't avail ourselves of this facility.
Breakfast was ok - but if you want a fried egg, find someone and ask for it.
If you visit in summer, there are tables and chairs on the patio overlooking the croquet lawn.
All the staff - reception and dining room - were very pleasant and helpful and we would be happy to return to this hotel if visiting the area. Alfriston is also well supplied with pubs and places to eat if you want an alternative to the hotel restaurant. A good base for a visit to the South Downs.

Room Tip: The extractor fan from the kitchen is noisy - but it is off at night - so you might want to avoid th...

We stayed for 2 nights while attending a funeral in Sussex. The hotel was very comfortable, the service first class and breakfast excellent. Staff were very attentive, for example offering to carry cases, offering an umbrella to go to the car when it was raining. We were very impressed. Sitting by the wood fire in the evening with a pint of Long Man Bitter is my main memory! Some of the bedroom doors are low BUT it is an old building and nothing could be done about that! All in all a lovely stay during a difficult couple of days. Alfriston is an interesting village too with some unusual shops (eg the music/CD shop) which are great.

Room Tip: We had room 8 which overlooks the front garden and has a 4 poster bed.
